Alle Beiträge beruhen auf aktuellen Archivrecherchen und wurden bislang noch nicht publiziert. Insgesamt zeigt der Band, dass die Entscheidung zur ersten Direktwahl des Europäischen Parlamentes im Jahr 1979 ein wichtiger Anreiz für die nationalen Parteien zur transnationalen Kooperation war. Institutionelle Veränderungen auf der EG-Ebene waren also entscheidend für die Kooperation der Parteien. Andererseits stieß diese Kooperation von Beginn an auf Widerstände, die vor allem in den ideologischen Differenzen zwischen den Parteien, andererseits in ihren sehr heterogenen Binnenstrukturen zu finden sind.
