Confronted with an ageing queen, an unsettled
succession, and increasing religious and factional
tensions, not to mention war with the greatest
power in Europe, Elizabethan England faced a
deeply uncertain future. These anxieties were at the
centre of Shakespeares plays.
In this monumental study, Peter Lake goes further
than any other critic in revealing the extent to
which Shakespeare’s plays spoke to the depth
and sophistication of Elizabethan culture and
imagination, examining the complex ways in
which Shakespeares major histories engaged with
the events and problems of his day: the prospect
of dynastic civil war and foreign invasion; doctrinal
controversy; confessional conflict; and the role of
virtu(e) in politics.
Exploring the bold and very public statements
Shakespeares plays made about contemporary
issues, this remarkable literary and historical
analysis pulls back the curtain on what Shakespeare
was really telling his audience — and what his plays
tell us today about the period in which they were
written.
