The Spartan Experiment: Society and Army of Sparta
by Yurij V. Andreev
The monograph deals with key problems of the history of Sparta in the most
ancient times of its existence. Although the Spartan themes always were and con-
tinued to be very popular in foreign scholarly literature, in Russian historiography
they have been worked out to a lesser degree. The author of this book, the outstand-
ing Russian expert in Classical studies Yu. V. Andreev (1937—1998), was a pioneer
of domestic studies in the field of Spartan history and culture. He wrote a number
of articles concerning this topic and one of just a few Russian-language monographs
about Sparta (Archaic Sparta: Art and Politics. St. Petersburg, 2008). In Part I
(«The formation of the Spartan state») of the present work considered are the fac-
tors that had led to the formation of this so specific and enigmatic Greek polis.
Besides, examined in detail are the state system of Sparta and its legislative founda-
tion, as well as peculiarities of the civil community structure. In particular, special
attention is paid to the interpretation of the text of the Great Rhetra — a kind of
the archaic Spartan «constitution» — as it is in Plutarch’s biography of the legendary
Spartan law-giver, Lycurgus (ch. VI). The Rhetra, which granted broader author-
ity to the Spartan damos (the common citizens) in the case of decision-making at
the people’s assembly meetings, seems to have come to light ca. 750 B.C. This
important reform can be regarded as one of the first major achievements of Greek
democracy. In addition, in Part I studied are paramount institutions of the polis
authority (kings and ephors), various structures of the Spartan community (agelas
and syssitia), forms of ownership, and the status of women, family and marriage
in the Spartan society.
In Part II («The Spartan phalanx: its origin and role in the development of
the Spartan society») analyzed is ail the range of issues related to the organization
and functioning of the army that was not only the strongest one in ancient Greece,
but also the most important implement of the Spartan governing body to realize
its goals in both foreign and internal policies. The archaeological material uncov-
ered in the sanctuary of Artemis Orthia gives grounds to suppose that the formation
of the hoplite phalanx in its classical version had to be completed in Sparta in the
6th century B.C. (perhaps within its first half). The example of Archaic-age Spar-
ta demonstrates very clearly that a correlation of two processes — the formation of
the polis and the development of the phalanx — was substantially mutual. The hop-
lite army with its particular principles of strategy and tactics was able to come into
being solely under conditions of the polis state. But in the course of its development
process such an army had to become a considerable political factor exerting
a mighty backward influence on the polis «maternal womb» that had given birth
to it. In other words, the Spartan order (kosmos) may be equally evaluated as
the main precondition for the origination of the phalanx and as its product.
