Byzantium in the Middle Ages
Summary
In February 1989, in Paris, Evelyne Patlagean, an emi-
nent scholar in Byzantine studies, whose seminar I began to
attend, invited me to a café, and asked me who had super-
vised my Ph. D. dissertation. “Professor Halina Evert- Kap-
pesowa”, I answered. “And whose student was Mme Kap-
pesowa, asked Professor Patlagean. I answered that Oskar
Halecki’s. And whose student was he? - she continued. I did
not know that, but he was the first scholar to launch Byzan-
tine studies in Poland after the Great War, when the coun-
try regained independence. She nodded, and then I asked
her why she was asking me questions about all this. “Pour
établir la filiation” - she was happy to answer.
I have mentioned this conversation, because it is a good
starting-point before summarizing the articles collected in
this volume. Following the interests of Professor Evert-Kap-
pesowa, who studied the church union between Constatino-

pie and Rome signed in Lyons in 1274,1 began my Byzan-
tine adventure by dealing with Michael VIII Palaiologos
and his efforts to save Byzantium from the repetition of
the Fourth Crusade. This subject decided about my future
scholarly field. I devoted my research to the late Byzantine
Empire and its relations with the West. This is generally
the Palaiologian period (1261-1453), but I also examined
the Ottonian times because of the Byzantine connections as
well as Komnenian matrimonial alliance with France in the
12th century. I was asked to comment on Feliks Koneczny’s
idea of Byzantine civilization, which is reflected here, in the
context of feudalism in Europe. I closed the volume by com-
memorating two legendary scholars in Byzantine Studies:
Paul Lemerle and Steven Runciman. Also, I was pleased to
bring into the book the interview offered by Anthony Bryer,
who had visited Lodz in 1993, and whose research on the
Empire of Trebizond remains an invaluable inspiration.
The general scope of this book concerns the politics of
Byzantine emperors. Michael VIII Palaiologos concentrated
his efforts on the West because of the danger of Charles of
Anjou reconquering Byzantium for the Latins, but he did
not lose sight of the East. His political relations with the
Islamic Egypt are a good example. However, Michael VIII
paid a high price for the church union; he managed to save
Byzantium from Charles, but this did not put an end to the
western claims to Constantinople. Moreover, Epiros became
a field of the political rivalry not only with the Latins but
also with the Byzantines themselves. The Byzantine territo-
ries experienced many difficult moments of Byzantine-Latin
cohabitation, as the Latins remained there till the end. The
situation became even more complicated in the 14th cen-

tury, because of the dynastic war between Michael VIII’s
son Andronicos II and his grandson Andronikos III. These
political quarrels contributed to the career of John Kanta-
kouzenos, a gifted leader who managed to gain the Byzan-
tine crown in 1347. The marriage of his daughter Irene to
John V Palaiologos was meant to be a happy ending, but it
was not. Kantakouzenos was overthrown by his son-in-law
who was immediately confronted with the Osmanlis; they
settled down in Gallipoli in 1356. Seeking help in Rome in
vain, Palaiologos signed a treaty which submitted him to the
Turks in 1372-1373. His second son, Manuel II, tried to drop
this humiliating relation, but was surrounded by Bayezid in
Constantinople in 1394. Upset by the battle of Nicopolis,
the Emperor went to seek his last chance in the West, es-
pecially in Paris, where he was received by Charles VI the
Fool who tried to help. This extraordinary travel and the
Emperor’s remarks on the political situation are reflected in
the book. But it was not the West that saved Constantino-
ple. Tamerlane’s invasion and battle at Ankara in 1402 re-
sulted in wars for succession between the Sultan’s sons, due
to which Byzantium regained the status of an independent
state even if its territory was a shadow of the previous glory.
Manuel profited by the situation in Asia Minor but the
end of the empire was only a question of time. The Hexa-
million Wall in Corinth Isthmus, rebuilt to protect the
peninsula against the Turkish invasion, occurred to be an
illusion, and the battle of Varna in 1444 was a bitter les-
son to the last Palaiologoi: John VIII and Constantine XI.
Constantinople fell in 1453, and the last Emperor died while
defending the City. The imperial family on the Pelopon-
nesus hoped to survive, but its rule ended in 1460. Thomas

Palaiologos went to Rome and gained the protection of the
Pope, but it was impossible to raise western Europe against
the Turks.
The idea of a crusade against the Infidels was a leitmotif
of every pontificate at that time. Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini
- Pius II was eager to pursue it, but he did not manage to
collect sufficient forces and died in Ancona in 1464. It is to
him that we owe an expression “Europe lost one eye”, which
he uttered upon learning about the fall of Constantinople
in 1453. The other eye. I decided that this sad but relevant
metaphor would make a good title for my book.
