Few things are more resilient than sources of energy. Technological and economic
trajectories of energy supply and consumption are forged over long periods of time
and develop path-dependences among almost all economic sectors. They also entail
huge investments and sunk costs hard to be disregarded.
This is particularly true when we talk about replacing worldwide diffused fuels for alter-
natives. Fossil fuels versus renewables have been a long-term struggle. After almost four
decades of debates, the final round is not yet foreseeable, and ups and downs in the
trajectory of renewables are still occurring.
Actually, since the past decade renewables have made the grade and have reached a
better position in the ranking of liquid fuels. In countries and regions such as the United
States, the EU, and Brazil, biofuels account for quite an important volume of liquid
fuel consumption, and it is increasing. They are not only well placed on the stage, but
indeed represent a real potential to partially replace fossil fuels in the near future. But
how and when?
Precisely because of their indubitable potential, the ups and downs of renewables
deserve a more comprehensive explanation. What are the pros and cons that have
been shaping the trajectory of biofuels? How should we explain contradictory policies
toward liquid fuels being issued in many countries? Which conceptual and method-
ological approaches help us more in understanding the weaving of arguments involved
in this matter?
This book tries to answer these and other related questions, particularly concerning the
most important biofuel bioethanol.
After a decade of huge investments made by big companies and governments all
around the world, we need to start talking about the real conditions in which bioeth-
anol will (or will not) evolve. Uncertainties and certainties are discussed here and
addressed to understand the future of global bioethanol.
