Greek mime in the literary genres
Summary
The scholars’ common opinion as follows: the history of Greek literary mime starts
with Sophron. Before we only have some scarce information about its non-literary stage.
The author of the dissertation has tried to proof, that the mime in the Greek literature
had existed at least from the time of Iliad and Odyssey, codependent, in all basic kind of
literary forms: in epic, lyric and drama.
The main difficulty has been to find the criteria to recognize the mime. As is known,
from the beginning of Greek literature up to the Hellenistic era, the mimes, which would
function in their independent literary form, have not been found. It was absolutely crucial
to discover the earliest literary form of mime, which would exist in its entirety, and base on
its analysis to start the reconstruction of distinguishing features of the genre, which were
also called genological characteristics. Discovered and then published in 1891 by Frederic
George Kenyon Herodas’ mimes (poet, III century before the Christ), brought seven well-
preserved literary forms. Also we have found large fragments (except the main part) of the
eighth mime, often described as autobiographic.
The thesis’ author has proposed obviously occurred method of the genological pro-
ceeding. At first he established characteristics of a form and structure of the Herodas’
mime and accepted them as a criterion to recognize the mime in different literary genres
(chapter I).
Following the ancient philosophers, especially those of a peripatetic school, he ac-
cepted that mime as a form of drama has a characteristic of action and dialog. Opposite
to the comedy it has a form of a single stage. Its structure is framed by entries and exits
of the actors or openings and closings of a scene. The structure of a frame is parallel,
the functions of its elements respond to a prolog and consequently to an exodus of the co-
medy. There are three elements in the frame of an entry: formula of a salute, introduction
of a staged actor and explanation of the purpose of his arrival; which was an introduction
to an action. The frame of an exit is in conclusion of an action, includes an adequate
formula of salute or so called metatextual expressions, often connected to the name of an
actor which stays on the stage with a commentary about the fulfilled goal and introduces
the action’s continuation or its conclusion.
The goal of a mime, similarly to the comedy is to provoke to laughter (gelotopoiein).
The laughter had a described function: educational, well-behaving, commenting or just
148
provoking to entertaining (terpein). In case of Herodas’ mimes we can observe the de-
parture from the aggressive humor, which were characteristic to the old comedy and ac-
ceptation of the reflective humor, which could be a result of the influence by new comedy
or Menippean satire. It is noticed that the Greek poet is especially avoiding simple repri-
mand or teaching from the stage. From the technic of provoking laughter included in the
Tractatus Coislinianus the following were mention in particular: pleonddzein, duksesis
(amplification gradatio in maius vel peius), creation of an antitype based on a collision
of the contrasting attributes of a characters, para prosdokian technic, which is based on
the confrontation of the audience or the participants on the stage with unexpected turn of
action or expressions of the characters of a play.
Careful analyses of particular literary forms have brought exact proof of the literary
mime existence, but also allowed to verify mentioned in chapter I mime’s recognizing
criterion, to separate of its schematic characteristics, constant and individual in the literary
genres.
Further, following the ancient artists’ and commentators’ statements and also follow-
ing the intuitive suggestions of the modem times scholars who tried to characterize humor
of the episodes, the thesis’ author has established area of the investigation in epic: Iliad,
Odyssey, Hesiod’s Works and days (chapter II), in lyrics: Homers’ Hymn to Demeter and
Hymn to Hermes, Callimachus’ Hymn to Demeter, Theocritus Pharmakeutria (chapter
III), in drama: Aeschylus’ The Oresteia, Aristophanes’ The Acharnians (chapter IV) and
Plato’s dramatic dialogs Euthydemus, Ion (chapter V).
The results of this detailed work can be described in one sentence: the structures of
a mime were known and used in literary works of ancient poets, beginning with Homer
and concluding with drama authors. With preserved its structure the literary mime had
functioned in particular genres of literature.
Through the analyses of the chosen episodes it had been proved that mimic scenes
were purposely included in the structure of the presented literary world. Their purpose
was to provoke laughter (gelotopoiein) between persons acting on stage or provoke the
joyful feeling (terpein). Its function in the piece depends on the literary genre. In epic
forms mimes have had the diegematic character, which means, that scenes of entry and
exits of characters of a play and the commentary were directed by the omniscient narra-
tor. The purpose of the mime was to change the mood of the story, avoidance of quar-
rels and tensions between the characters of a play (Iliad, Odyssey). Also, the structure of
a mime has been used to illustrate narrator’s believe that, for example, the women is the
reason of all what is no good in the world (Hesiod - motive of Pandora). In lyric forms of
literatures the mimes trough the allusions and references (Hymn to Demeter) served to
express a play of words (intertextual game) with the obvious desire to create the feeling of
a pleasure in the audience (Hymn to Hermes, Callimachus’ Hymn to Demeter) or were just
the master play connecting its dramatic structure with lyric experience (Theocritus’ Phar-
makeutria). In Aeschylus’ tragedy mime had created pleasant feeling (terpein) for its
collision with tragic fobos. In Aristophanes’ comedy the mimic scenes had preserved its
original structure and established their main goal gelotopoiein, but the talents of the poet,
through their tide connectivity provided the dramatization of a scene. However, the single
scenes loosely bound, connected only through the main character and idea (for example
149
peace) performed illustrating functions. In Platon’s dramatic dialogs mimes are being
inspired by the art of Epicharmus. Meanwhile, the author creates mimes according to
the known scheme from epic scenes (in accordance to the rule „one, who laughs at some-
one will be laughed at” - Euthydemos) or in accordance with a scheme of a comic mimes
(collision Socrates’ ironic character with aladzon - braggart - Ion).
The goal, which stands now in front of us, is to write an analytic history of the
Greek’s literary mime in both, an independent form and as a structural part of other liter-
ary genres.
It will be very important to expand the scope of research on the history of mime in
Greek prose. Let’s mention the magnificent mimes scenes in earlier and classical histo-
riography (Herodotus, Xenophon), or from the time of Caesars (Plutarchus’ biography),
including Lucian’s of Samosata {Dialogues of the Dead, Dialogues of the Gods) achieve-
ments in this literary genre.
