Bulgarians and Turks, Summary - npeB. AflpnaHa MoMnunoBa .366
BULGARIANS AND TURKS
The book you are holding in your hands is very important to every Bulgarian
in these days. It is part of a series of TANGRA TanNakRa Bulgarian Foundation
on the dialogue and interaction between us, the Bulgarians, and other nations -
closer or more distant - whom we have encountered in the past, with whom we
are interacting today, and with whom we would hopefully cooperate in the future.
Similar books have already addressed the coexistence and contacts of the
Bulgarians with Armenians, Serbs, Greeks, Jews, Americans, Arabs, Spaniards,
Italians, and French. So we can maintain that this book continues an already
established good tradition. At the same time, it is quite different from the
previous publications. This is because everything related with the coexistence,
relationships, conflicts, wars, domination, confrontation, and cooperation with
Turkey is so painful and deeply rooted into our ancestral awareness and in our
historical memory that no Bulgarian citizen - either of Bulgarian, Turkish,
Armenian, Jewish, Gypsy or other ethnic origin - would remain indifferent to the
topic. For nearly a century and a half, since the restoration of the state in 1878 to
this day, the relationship between Bulgarians and Turks has determined to some
extent the appearance and the politics of Bulgaria.
Historical attitudes have made the Bulgarians and Turks difficult to write
because numerous authors, compilers, editors and publishers have tried to tell
about the popular and the unknown topics in the bilateral relations since the first
contacts centuries ago to this day. They have attempted to approach the past with
no bias, but without neglecting the violence, the lost Bulgarian statehood, and
the mutual injustices caused. If we are to build good neighbourly relations in
the present and in the future, we must know our history without secrets and lies,
without politically motivated distortion and dressing up of embarrassing events.
And more - we need to know not only our own vision of common history, but
also the vision of the Other. Only after we have checked up all these, we can
fruitfully cooperate with awareness and confidence.
The book addresses all these views, events and aspects.
366
The story of the relationship between Bulgarians and Turks begins with a
presentation of the main contemporary symbols of both countries. This interesting
information helps to improve mutual awareness. The historical narrative to follow
allows the readers to compare the origin and time frame of the state structures of
Bulgarians and Turks which appeared in the Balkans. The parallel presentation of
the early history of the two peoples as well as the chronological table at the end
of the book fosters this comparison.
Since the main objective of the book is to trace the history of contact and
coexistence between Bulgarians and Turks in the Balkans, the essential historical
narrative opens with the 1 ^-century invasion of the Ottoman Turks. It is a known
fact that the centuries of Ottoman domination in Bulgarian lands - those most
hard times for the Bulgarian spirit - is a somewhat neglected and less known
part of Bulgarian history. One should be aware that despite the rigors of state
and religious suppression, the Bulgarians managed to preserve their ethnic self-
consciousness and spirit, and their Orthodox faith. The greatest place in this
narrative is naturally occupied by the Bulgarian Revival Period when the ideas,
stances and the major attributes of the modem Bulgarian nation were formed to
nurture the restoration of statehood. In this period, the Turks were the masters,
so their power was the target of the Bulgarians’ struggle to implement their hope
for the future.
Entirely new chapter in the coexistence between Bulgarians and Turks in the
Balkans opened after the Liberation of Bulgaria, when the relations between the
two nations acquired interstate characteristics as well. The restored Bulgarian
state faced yet another problem - the place and role of hundreds of thousands
of Turks who remained in Bulgaria to live as equal subjects. From that moment
on the relations between Bulgarians and Turks grew much more complex in
character. On the one hand, they become part of the official contacts between the
Ottoman Empire, which was still experiencing a crisis, and the Bulgarian state,
which strove to implement its national ideal by uniting all Bulgarians. On the
other hand, the position of the Bulgarians who have remained under the rule of
the empire appeared as an important topic in the interstate agenda.
The book traces the relationship between Bulgarians and Turks in the above
three aspects - the official one between the two states, the Bulgarians in the
Ottoman Empire, and the Turks in the Principality/Kingdom of Bulgaria. The
last two aspects are not well developed neither in Bulgarian nor in Turkish
historiography, hence the Bulgarians and Turks book definitely contributes
to bridge this gap. The reader will follow the huge challenges: the restoration
of the Bulgarian state and its fight to regain its deserved place on the map of
Europe, along with the severe consequences of the wars - the Russo-Turkish
War of Liberation (1877-1878), and the Balkan Wars (1912-1913). The conflicts
between the Empire and Bulgarian nation state cost a huge number of human
sacrifices, and left behind tragic memories, especially after the brutal killing of
thousands of Bulgarians and the expulsion of the survivors from Eastern Thrace
in 1913. One hundred years later, these events should not only be recalled, but
analyzed and presented in terms of today’s interpretations of concepts such as
ethnic cleansing and genocide.
In the period between the world wars, after the collapse of the Ottoman
Empire that followed the military defeat in the First World War and the Kemalist
revolution, the relations between the secular Turkish Republic and Bulgarian
Kingdom took a new path. The book focuses on the fate of the Bulgarian Turks
in the 20th century, when the Bulgarian state experienced not a few coups, twists,
deep geopolitical, political, economic and social transformations. Less attention
is paid to the Bulgarians in Turkey, who, after the turmoil of the wars, decreased
in number and were subjected to consistent assimilation.
Interpersonal relations are particularly important for a book whose title
involves not countries (Bulgaria and Turkey), but peoples (Bulgarians and Turks).
Therefore, emphasis on the human factor is seen in the introduction as well, which
is dedicated to post-war history. It traces the relations of the Bulgarian state and
the Bulgarian Turks, and highlights the considerable role that the latter play in
the politics of modem Bulgaria, already an EU and NATO Member State. This is
still a hot topic that continues to excite Bulgarian society not only because of the
so-called revival process, but also due to the efforts to its reinvention.
The nature of the book involves placing of emphases that highlight the
importance of specific elements in the relations between Bulgarians and Turks. It
is primarily for the way in which the citizens of the two neighbouring countries
get to know each other - this is mostly in the course of history education at
high school. So the book contains an overview of the ways in which Bulgarian
history is discussed in Turkish textbooks, and the Ottoman period in Bulgarian
history — in Bulgarian textbooks. Two extra emphases raise polemics - the first
one challenges some of the theses of Turkish historians on Bulgarian history,
which run counter to historical realities, while the second one introduces the
readers to the new trends in Turkish foreign policy, namely the doctrine of Prof.
Ahmet Davutoglu (former Foreign Minister and current Prime Minister) on Neo-
Ottomanism.
Important elements of our knowledge of the past are the spiritual and material
remains of the Ottoman rule in the Bulgarian lands, which have their special
place in the book. The memory of them is present in folk art, and in artistic works
of all genres, whose impact is still felt.
Modem day also finds its place in this book on the complex relations between
the two communities. We find it in the views of young Bulgarians participating in
the competitions ofRodolyubie [Patriotism] National Club and Rodno Ludogorie
Association. Based on their knowledge of the past and their lives in the present,
where there is a lot of violence alongside examples of cooperation and mutual
368
assistance in our long coexistence, the young people describe the current relations
through the prism of tolerance.
The concluding reference parts will be of interest to all readers: extensive
bibliography, description of the bilateral relations, as well as parallel historic
chronicle, which makes it possible to compare the historical path of the two
countries in a global context.
The Bulgarians and Turks publication is unique for Bulgarian literature as a
combination of academic studies and popular texts and will be useful to all who
want to know more about the common past of the two peoples and their countries,
and are excited by their common future.
