Summary
The book by Alexander Saran, Ph. D. in History, “Pages of the Social History
of the Orel Region in 1920-1928” is research on demography, history of popula-
tion, non-governmental organizations and local public sentiments. Chronology of
the monograph begins in 1920 when the Orel region loses 4 of 12 «uezdes» (dis-
tricts) and ends in 1928 when the Orel region disappears and its territory became a
part of the Centralnaya Chernozemnaya Oblast (Central Black-Soil Region).
There were 1.884.533 men and women lived in the Orel Region on 1926.
373.273 families were on 1926. According to the statistics there were 1.249 women per
1,000 men. In 1920-1928 growth of the population was 0,12 % per year. There were
55,8 people per square km in 1920 and 61,3 people per square km in 1926.
Food shortage and famine were in 1920, 1921, 1924, 1925 and 1927. Some part
of the population of the Orel Region famined and died of famine and diseases.
Local public sentiments had a full scale of emotions: joy and hatred, distur-
bances and traquillity. Peasants was the major part of population of the Orel region
and their sentiments depended on the agrarian events. Political police (CHKA-
OGPU - the All-Russian Extraordinary Comission for Combating Counter-
Revolution? Speculation and Sabotage) observed the local public sentiments. They
tried to find sentiments that could influence the political or economical campaignes
of the local and supreme authorities.
The total number of villages increased by 187 % from 1920 to 1926, there were
7.851 villages in the Orel Region. There are 15,4 villages per 100 square km in 1920
and 25,5 villages per 100 square km in 1926. According to the statistics there are 370
people in each village in 1920 and 216 in 1926.
There were 42 nationalities in the Orel Region, but 99,1 % of the population
were the Russians.
Non-governmental organizations are the basis of the civil society. Many of
them worked in the Orel Region in 1920-1928. The major part of them was located
in towns (Orel, Livny, Eletz, Maloarkhangelsk, Mtzensk, Bolkhow, Kromy, Dmi-
trowsk and Novosil). Authorities prohibited the peasants to form their own non-
governmental organizations. Religion organizations of different confessions were
in opposition to the communist authorities. Non-governmental organizations struc-
tured the society in the Orel Region.
We may say that society in the Orel Region had a high level of develop-
ment in 1920th. It was developing after general crisis in 1914-1920, the
population and number of villages were growing.
