Variations on the History of Latvian Drama:
Text and Context
The present collection comprises twelve articles analysing different issues
of the history of Latvian drama from its initial period till 1945.
The first article, “Historical and Literary Sources of “Vanems Imanta“,
legend by Garlieb Merkel“, analyses motifs and characters of the legend which
subsequently had an impact on Latvian culture, including drama, such as 12th/13th
cent, historical figures Imants, Alberts, Kaupo, appearance of the Baltic Germans at
the mouth of the Daugava, building of Riga, motifs of the duel of Imants and
Kaupo, and Imants’ dream. The article treats on one of G. Merkel’s essential
sources, Johann Gotthelf Lindner’s (1729 - 1776) drama for schools “Albert, or the
Foundation of Riga”, which on 27 November 1760 was staged at the Riga Dom
School. There are several plays in the history of Latvian drama with vanems
Imanta as the central hero, among them Ā. Alunāns’ drama “Our Ancestors” (1905)
and J. Akuraters’ play “Resurrection of Imants” (1908), as well as different drafts
by Rainis for his unfinished play about Imants. In Māra ZālTte s libretto for the
rock opera “Indriķis’ Chronicle” (1999) Bishop Albert appears next to Imants as
another main character.
As a genre of literature, Latvian drama developed in the 1870s - 1880s. At
that time it was important to create Latvian theatre and drama to prove that
Latvians, too, had theatre like any cultural nation, and to form the awareness of
national unity. In the 1870s - 1880s there was just one talented author, Ā. Alu-
nāns.
In the 1890s Latvian drama and theatre entered the stage of profession-
nalization, and Latvian drama acquired its national character. Latvian national
drama in the 1890s was created by R. Blaumanis and Aspazija. R. Blaumanis
developed the genres of realistic drama and comedy while Aspazija realized the
potential of the romanticism drama. At this time great interest was displayed in
West European drama. Authors read and studied works by theoreticians of drama,
classical West European drama as well as works by contemporary playwrights.
The article “Some Parallels in the Creativity of H. Sudermann and R. Blau-
manis” explores H. Sudermann’s influence on the creativity of R. Blaumanis (Count
Trast and Ringolds), parallels in R. Blaumanis’drama “In Fire” and H. Sudermann’s
drama “Happiness in a Remote Comer”, as well as typological parallels in the
depiction of the Jāņi episode in the works by H. Sudermann, A. Strindberg and
R. Blaumanis.

The essay “H. Ibsen s Traditions in Latvian Drama presents a comparative
treatment of the presence of H. Ibsen in Latvian drama in various aspects. It was
H. Ibsen s drama “A Doll s House that had the greatest influence on the Latvian
drama of the 1890s. Brand s principle “All or nothing! fascinated Latvian
dramatists (Aspazija, Rainis). In the early 20th century borrowings from H. Ibsen’s
works appear in the plays by the initiators of Latvian social drama (J. Palevics,
Lindulis). In the early 20th century modernism strikes root in Latvian drama. Both
the authors and the literary critics single out Ibsen as the example for the new
type of drama, especially his plays “Little Eyolf and “When We Dead Awaken .
Since the 1890s Henrik Ibsen’s dramas presented interest for Rainis, the
prominent Latvian playwright of the early decades of the 20th century. The
influence of H. Ibsen s analytical drama can be traced later also in the plays of the
Latvian dramatists A. Brigadere. M. Zlverts, G. Priede, L. Stumbre, I. Äbele and
other.
On the threshold of the 20th century plays appear in Latvian drama that
focus on social problems and their characters are moulded as social class types.
The article “Jukums Palevics , the Initiator of Social Drama in Latvian Literature
gives an insight into the story of J. Palevics’ life and work, as well as an analysis of
his plays “Fraulchen” and “In the Bog .
A demand for a new type of art gains strength in the early 20th century, an
art that would comprehensively embrace the life of the new century man and
would provide a deeper understanding of the world and reflect the modem
philosophical and psychological concepts. The first two decades witness the
flourish of Latvian drama and it is at this time that most of Latvian classical
dramas are created. The essay “Death in the New Latvian Drama treats on the
relations between modernism and decadence in the drama of this period.
The article “Folklore and Latvian Drama in the Early 20th Century provides
analysis of the intertwinement of drama and folklore in the early 20th century.
Folklore helps to develop a new understanding of man, life s ideals and the nation
in drama. Since every kind of traditional art is a guarantee of stability (it helps to
identify that which is stable and intransient), in Latvian drama it helps to realise
the idea of life as joy, life as value. Under the influence of folklore drama
experiences the advent of the genre of fairy tale play (A. Brigadere, Rainis). During
the flourish of modernism the presence of folklore in drama preserved its function
of forming I its national identity. At the time when cosmopolitan and Marxist
ideas pervaded culture, drama highlighted national ideas and addressed the
Latvian as a spectator or a reader.
The drama of the early 20th century experiences also the advent of the
image o of f the pure-minded person (one-act play “Saturday Night by R. Blau-

manis). The essay “Image of the Pure-minded People in Latvian Literature traces
the development of the image of the pure-minded person to its origins in the
ethics of Hemhuter Briidergemeine (Moravian Church), from the character of Ilze
in the novel “The Time of Surveyors by the Kaudzīte brothers to modem
literature.
The two prominent lady dramatists Aspazija and Brigadere write plays that
bear associaton to the year of 1905. “The Silver Veil by Aspazija expresses the
yearnings and mood of people during the revolution, while A. Brigadere s drama
“At Dawn is the first Latvian play to portray revolutionaries of 1905 and their
activities. The personal relations of the two playwrights and their attitude to the
events of 1905 are explored in the article “Aspazija and Anna Brigadere .
Rainis is the founder of the genre of tragedy in Latvian drama. He was well
acquainted with the history of the genre and considered Aeschylus as the founding
father of European drama of ideas which was popular in the course of the 20th
century. Rainis considered the conflict in Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus as one
with important repercussions for the later tragedy genre: this conflict was
distinctly developed in his own plays. Rainis had a keen interest in the concept of
tragic fault which stems from Greek tragedies, as well as in the perception and
interpretation of it in different epochs. He was also attracted to the idea of self-
sacrifice in Greek culture, and this attraction is also reflected in his plays.

The tragedy “Indulis and Ārija (1919) is the Rainis first play where love
plays an essential role in his creativity in terms of the story, the plot, the portrayal
of characters and the philosophical concept. The article “Love in Rainis* Tragedy
“Indulis and Ārija : Text and Context offers to view love in the context of Rainis
biography as well as treats on the playwright’s attempt to synthesize the features
of French classicism and Shakespearean drama
During the pre-war Republic of Latvia the most innovative genres of drama
are comedy (drawing-room comedy, social comedy, popular comedy) and historical
tragedy. The article “Some Aspects in Rainis’ Tragedy “Love over Death and
Andrejs Upīts’ tragedy “Joan of Arc provides analysis of the views of the two
playwrights on tragedy as a genre and interpretation of history in the two plays.
A crisis can be identified in the genre of Latvian tragedy in the 1920s as essential
features of tragedy in plays are substituted by elements of drama.
The essay “Mārtiņš Zīverts’ Dramatic Works in the Context of Literature
under the Nazi Occupation offers to consider a new stage in the history of Latvian
drama, marked by certain historical context and certain principles of developing
time (“as if there’s no war , present without future), space (closed) and characters
(dreamers, liars).
