It is hard to find, I imagine, graduate students who did not have to suffer
during their formative years some amount of arrogance, whether from indi-
viduals or institutions. What a welcome relief, then, to have spent time with
Julian Jaynes while 1 was a graduate student at Princeton University. His
great insights placed him in awe before the complexity and subtlety of what
we call psyche, and his humility and modesty were the ultimate muse for this
book. For this I will always be grateful.

Julian Jaynes Society. His encouragement of and commitment to the world of
great ideas is greatly appreciated. I want to also express my gratitude to an
