SUMMARY
Authored by Fran Novljan, the ethnographic monograph on Boljun in Istria represents one of the most significant manuscripts in the collection of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and its Committee on Folk Life and Customs. The manuscript first came into existence as a response to Antun Radic's well-known questionnaire „Foundations for Collecting and Interpreting Materials about Folk Life“ ( Osnovaza sabiranje i proucavanje narodnog zivota). Radie required that only local people who were either born in the community of region or were their long-term inhabitants collect data about local life. As they obviously needed to be literate, the respondent group primarily comprised of teachers and priests, and occasionally literate peasants and students. One of these students was Fran Novljan, a young man from Boljun in Istria. As a clas-sics-program high school senior in Susak (Rijeka), during summer and winter breaks (in 1898 and 1899 respectively), Novljan comprehensively documented and described folk life in Boljun, his original community, closely following the questions published in Radic's Osnova. He titled his work „Boljun: Folk Life and Customs“ (.Boljun:kmiècki zivot i uz(a)nci) and submitted four chapters of the manuscript material to the Academy in 1899.
Pausing the work for over half a century, Novljan returned to his field research in 1950, encouraged by ethnologist Milovan Gavazii. Having lived through two World Wars and with decades of education work and foreign language expertise under his belt, Novljan decided to further document folk life and customs in Boljun, this time writing from a retiree's perspective. He exhibited a strong commitment to the project and a tremendous willpower and desire to complete the monograph, and he clearly cared deeply about the content he was taking down, while paying extremely close attention to the linguistic components of the narration he was documenting. He believed that the written record of the folk language/dialect, was at least of equal significance if not more important than the ,pure‘ documentation of folk life content. With this attitude

in mind, he posed detailed questions of his research subjects, and marked all of their narration with accents, being able to do so effectively since he spoke the dialect himself. With this differentiating characteristic, Novljan's monograph appears to be the only one of its kind with accents marked throughout the manuscript. It is evident from Novljan's writing that he considers the local dialect spoken in Boljun to be one of the fundamental components of the Istrian, and by extension Croatian, identity. Ultimately, he considers the ability to speak one’s local dialect to be a demonstration of freedom of mankind. We therefore find it a great accomplishment to be able to publish this monograph with the inclusion of all of the marked accents, trusting that in this way Novljan's work is presented — and honored — in its entirety.
Novljan often included commentaries on the people he was studying and the folk life he was exploring in its various manifestations. Working with both older and younger research subjects, he developed a consistent methodology, and chose not to conceal his ,voice4 as writer and narrator in his texts. Delving deeply and broadly into various aspects of folk life, Novljan wrote about life at home, in nature, and at work, describing in detail a variety of relationships and interactions within the family structure, including sections on child rearing, folk medicine, folk law, and describing in detail various customs, including those surrounding birth, weddings, death, as well as annual holiday celebrations such as Christmas, Easter, etc.
The final part of the monograph includes folklore material based on field research Novljan conducted in conjunction with ethno-musicologist Vinko Zganec in 1960. Owing primarily to Novljan's expertise in the subject matter, Novljan

and Zganec successfully recorded a bulk of folk songs, bugarenje amd kanta-nje. Novljan included a description of the recording process in his manuscript, as well as song lyrics, descriptions of the accompanying dances, and written accounts of conversations with the singers and instrument makers. He completed the manuscript and submitted the final version of the monograph to the Academy in 1960. Due to technical problems regarding the marked accents found throughout the text, the monograph remained unpublished, prior to this edition.
Accompanying Novljan's mongraph, prefaced by an introductory study by Tanja Peric-Polonijo, editor, the second part of this edition includes related submissions by a number of additional authors. We find their respective studies to be intrinsically important to an all-encompassing presentation of Novljan's work, as a contribution to the cultural heritage of Boljun and its surroundings. Slaven Bertosa presents a detailed historical study on Boljun and the area; Dario Marusic authors an in-depth ethno-musicological study; Drazen Vlahov writes on Glagolitic inscriptions in the church of St. George in Boljun; Josip Siklic discusses the same church from a perspective of an art historian; and Ferdo Toncinic brings a detailed biography of Fran Novljan.
In publishing this monograph we were led by an overarching idea that archival manuscripts represent an incredible, and unavoidable, research source available to help us interpret traditional culture phenomena and conduct a comparative study of a variety of ethnological, anthropological and folklore material. In order to establish a relationship with the past, even if not so distant, we need to allow it into our awareness and consciousness. We trust that the publication of this manuscript in its entirety will serve as an inspiration to all readers, and primarily those from Boljun, to preserve and continue to present and bring forth their traditional culture in its many forms.
