The Early 17th Century Senjski Pilot guide The Velebit Podgorje region between Senj and Dracevac, according to the Croatian and German editions of the Senj Pilot guide
Summary
This study analyses the early 17th century pilot guide known as the Senj Pilot (Senjski peljar). It also includes and examines different versions of the original texts in Croatian and German. The Senj is a completely authentic pilot book that describes the waters of the Vele-bitsko Podgorje region from Senj to Dracevac (Novsko Zdrilo Strait). It was probably written to serve the needs of local seamen, and was later codified for the needs of the Grand Captain of Senj (the captain of the coastal part of the Croatian Military Border). Similar works compiled before it, including cartographical depictions, did not contain nearly as many harbours and coves as the Senj Pilot. Pilots and cartographic depictions from the 17th and 18th centuries were perhaps more precise, but did not include nearly as great a variety of nautical and geographical information as the Senj Pilot.
The systematic hydrographical and land survey of the Adriatic Sea and Croatian coastal area performed during the first two decades of the 19th century represented a sort of a turning point. Pilots and cartographical works written after that survey, or based on later 19th and 20th century surveys, contain much more information than the Senj Pilot. However, they often did not include all the information available at the time, but limited their contents to the most important ports, harbours, coves, and other geographical objects important to navigation.
This analysis of the Senj Pilot shows that it is an completely authentic nautical and commercial document. It provides a wealth of information that could not be found in any similar historical documents written before it. In addition, the range of information regarding a fairly short section of the Croatian coast (Senj - Dracevac - Obrovac) found in this pilot, would not be matched until the appearance of modem pilots during the 1820s, or even later. It is also the oldest work of its sort written in Croatian. Finally, a German version of this pilot appeared a mere two decades after the original was written. That is why it was worth exploring this highly important historical source in detail. The authors hope that the results obtained in this study may encourage other scientists to tackle the Senj Pilot and contribute to the resolution of certain issues still current in this study.
The analysis includes copies of original manuscripts, along with their transcripts. For the purpose of comparison, it also contains parts of certain pilot books and cartographical depictions of Velebit Channel produced between the late 15th century and the second half of the 20th century. They were used as the basis for the scientific analysis in this work.
