Introduction
In 2003 target searches for the Early Pleistocene sites were initiated
in the North Caucasus. Experts of the Institute of Archaeology of the
Russian Academy of Sciences (hereafter RAS) and the Institute of
Archeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the RAS
took part in the team-work. A few years ago specialists of the Institute of
History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Dagestan Scientific Center
of the RAS joined this work that is still in progress. In the course of the
works significant results have been obtained in the territory of Dagestan.
Prior to these studies there was no information on any Paleolithic sites
here with archaeological finds in the geological context. To date, about
30 sites with stratified Paleolithic material have been discovered and are
being investigated. The indirect result of the actual work is that the col-
leagues of related scientific disciplines (geologists, geomorphologists,
palynologists, paleozoologists, paleopaedologists, and experts in magne-
tostratigraphy) obtain first-rate material concerning the region, which has
not been explored or has been scarcely explored in geological, paleogeo-
graphic, paleozoological and chronostratigraphic aspects. Specialists in
each of these disciplines point out that the natural science data revealed
at the newly identified Dagestan Paleolithic sites are unique not only for
the North Caucasus, but also for the southern part of the East European
Plain. This work in a systematized form shows the current state of the
sources and presents the main results of the study of the Oldowan sites
in the North-East Caucasus. On the basis of specific sources the problem
of the ways and time of the original human occupation of West Eurasia
is considered, and the role and place of the North Caucasus and Ciscau-
casia in this process is determined. Naturally, the issues concerning the
content of the material culture, the basic characteristics of way of living

of the population that first developed the region were also studied. Much
attention is paid to the data that allow to create a logical reconstruction of
natural and geographical conditions, climate and landscape, in which the
members of the first wave of migration from East Africa through Asia Mi-
nor to the southwest of Eurasia lived. Currently, in the eastern part of the
North Caucasus (Central Dagestan; Akushinsky District of the Republic
of Dagestan), the Ainikab- Muhkai-Gegalashur group consisting of eight
multilayer Early Pleistocene sites is being studied. The total number of the
revealed cultural layers of the objects comes close to a hundred. Unfortu-
nately, at this stage of the work it is not possible to carry out detailed de-
scription of the archaeological collections of these sites with the required
specification. To date, a lot of material is accumulated, and, nevertheless,
the state of knowledge for most of the sites is still in the stage of intensive
exploration work. Specific cultural layers have been excavated over a rel-
atively wide area. For example, layer 80 of the site of Muhkai 2 has been
investigated over the area of 4 4 square meters. The area of layers 2013-1
and 2013-2
Muhkai 2a is nearly the same. The lower layers at the site of Ainikab
1 were exposed over an area of more than 30 square. The Muhkai sites,
which are being excavated at the present time, demonstrate the thickness of
section that is unprecedented for the archaeological sites of the Early Pleis-
tocene. At the site of Muhkai 2 the thickness of the section, for instance, is
73 meters. These geological members contain 34 Early Paleolithic cultural
layers, distributed from the bottom upwards throughout the whole section.
The total of all cultural layers of the site covers the chronological range
from 1.95 Ma to 0.8 Ma. Of particular value is the fact that several studied
horizons of the Central Dagestan sites represent the type of cultural depos-
its, which belong to the real habitation surfaces. And they were excavated
properly using microstratigraphic method. This makes possible a detailed
reconstruction of syngenetic factors in the formation of cultural deposits
and epigenetic changes in the layer after its burial. This type of sites is rare
for the Oldowan and it offers beneficial material for evidence- based conclu-
sions about the functional type of the site under consideration, facies varia-
tion, and taphonomic characteristics of different parts of the cultural layer.
The presence of diverse materials of multidisciplinary research makes the
dating of the sites evidential. Synthesis of the results of various laboratory
tests makes it possible to obtain a complete and in many respects detailed
picture of the development of the culture and natural environment in the
region of the North-East Caucasus throughout the Early Pleistocene. The
fact that some cultural layers were excavated over a large area and provid-

ed numerous collections of stone tools enables in some cases to conduct a
detailed typological analysis. The results of the latter, in its turn, serve as a
ground for well-reasoned conclusions regarding technical and typological
aspects of stone tools of the studied sites, their common features and specif-
ic manifestations. The work was carried out at the Institute of Archaeology
of the RAS and the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of
the Dagestan Scientific Center of the RAS. Laboratory investigations and
identifications of natural science materials were conducted at the Institute
of Geography of the RAS, Geological Institute of the RAS, Lomonosov
Moscow State University, Paleontological Institute of the RAS, and Zoo-
logical Institute of the RAS. A part of the included materials was obtained
owing to funding by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (Grant
No.13-06-12005).
