Contributions to the Biography of Josip Gjuran enables its reader to meet a Catholic priest who has devoted his entire life to the wellbeing of the Catholic Church and the Croatian nation. Josip Gjuran was born in the parish of Ludbreg on 4 August 1922. It is the parish where, in 1411, a Eucharistic miracle occurred. Namely, when celebrating Holy Mass, at the moment of transubstantiation, “the priest doubted the real presence of Christ in the species of wine consecrated in order to become the Blood of Christ.” “The fluid then ac- quired a visible natural color of blood”. Many heretics were trying to shake the faith of the people of God as to the real presence of Christ in the sacred species of consecrated bread and wine. But after many miracles had hap- pened involving this holy relic it became officially honoured as a holy relic of the Blood of Christ. In addition, Pope Julius II had the entire event investigated in 1512 and proclaimed the Ludbreg parish church as a sanctuary permitted to grant spe- cial pardons. His successor, Pope Leo X, confirmed the proc- lamation on 19 March 1513 by a solemn letter. The Eucharistic devotion in the parish of Ludbreg made it possible for Josip Gjuran, ever since he was a little boy, to trust in Jesus’ Eucharistic Presence, surrounded by the faith of his parents, brothers and sisters, neighbors and fellow pa- rishioners. The Eucharistic miracle brought forth many call- ings to the priesthood and it is no wonder that Josip Gjuran was one among them. However, during his formation to become a priest, Josip met with the difficult living circumstances of Croatian pcas- 408 Summary ants. The Croatian nation was suffering because of Greater Serbian tendencies and the horrors of WWII. During that period, fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, and the Communist Party of Yugoslavia, backed by Stalin’s Red Army, were leading occupying wars on Croatian soil. Each faction was trying to get hold of land which belonged to the Croatian nation. Croatia was recognized as a state and a nation by Pope John VIII in 879 and Pope John X in 925. After finishing secondary school in the Zagreb Junior Seminary, he entered the Archdiocesan Senior Seminary and the Faculty of Divinity in Zagreb. After the end of WWII, a large number of Croatian soldiers and civilians retreat- ed towards the Austrian border where Allied forces were stationed. Croatians were fleeing before the Partisan army which had committed terrible crimes against Catholic be- lievers during the war including killing thousands of Cro- atian officers, soldiers, civilians, and over 200 priests. But Josip Gjuran was one among the thousands whose life was spared and who were brought back to Zagreb. He had been kept in various camps, after which he had to enter military service. He recalled the difficulties he faced, since military authorities considered him “an enemy of the people”, be- cause he was to become a priest. Upon his return from the army, he continued and fin- ished the Faculty of Divinity. Monsignor Franjo Salis-See- wis, in charge of the “sede imp edit a y17^ ordained him as a priest on 29 June, 1948. After his ordination to the priesthood, he served as a parish vicar in the parishes of Nova Kapela (1948-1949) and Klostar Podravski (1949-1950). In February of 1950, he was appointed parish priest in the parish of Sveta , where he was to remain all the way until 31 August 1968. Since he had met with Archbishop Stepinac as a sem- inarian, during his many visits to the Archdioccsan Semi- nary, he grew to love his attitude, principles, and deeds. He ‘‘Impeded service” or “impeded throne” means that Mons. Salis-Seewis was running the Zagreb Archdiocese in lieu of Archbishop Stepinac who was unable to perform his serv ice as Bishop after the Communist authorities had sentenced and imprisoned him on the basis of a mounted trial on 11 October 1946. 409 ZIVOT ZA BOGA, CRKVU I HRVATSKI NAROD • Prinosi za zivotopis svecemka Josipa G\|iirana remained faithful to them when Archbishop Stepinac was in jail, and President Tito wanted to establish a national Catholic Church, separated from Rome. The priests who remained faithful to their bishops and refused to cooperate with the secret police in the establishment of the said nation- al Church were punished by unjust taxes and lies about their alleged immoral life. They were accused of working against the people and were heavily disturbed in their service. From the very beginning of his priesthood, Reverend Gjuran was faithful to the vow of obedience to his bishop. He was relentless in refusing offers of the Communist Party officials regarding lucrative positions and material gain. Be- cause of his refusals he had suffered many injustices, phys- ical assaults, and eventually imprisonment in his parish of Sveta Jana. When Gjuran arrived to his parish he saw the church and the rectory were damaged from attacks by Partisan forc- es. He saw the parishioners were spiritually neglected and worn down by the atrocities of war. Gjuran had the par- ish church and the rectory reconstructed and a new cate- chism hall built, since catechism was no longer a part of the school curriculum. Through his sermons and talks, Rever- end Gjuran started slowly encouraging the faithful whose spirit had been crushed. This book describes physical assaults on Father Gjuran based on testimony, his own as well as that of his flock, and from available documents. He gained his strength and en- durance from his unshakcablc faith in God, as well as the encouragement of Archbishop Stepinac. On 5 December 1951 Stepinac was transferred from Lcpoglava prison to the rectory of his native parish in Krasic, only several miles away from Gjuran s parish of Sve- ta Jana. The Archbishop, proclaimed Cardinal on 12January 1953, encouraged the persecuted parish priest of Sveta Jana through notes sent by Krasic parish priest Josip Vranekovic, whose rectory was his home during his house arrest, as well as through letters we are enclosing in this book in the form of photocopies and transcripts. This book also contains testimonies of the Sveta Jana parishioners describing their parish priest’s brave conduct as 410 Summary well as their love for him as a vicar of Christ. They fed him during times of shortage and defended him from Commu- nist attacks. They did it because they were convinced that he was no slave to any kind of politics, but rather that, out of love for God, the Church, and the Croatian nation, he devoted all his strength to teaching young people the truths of faith, preparing future couples for the Sacrament of Mar- riage, always being kind to his flock and being generous to the poor. The same is true of the parish Karlovac-Hrnetic, where Gjuran was sent on recommendation by Cardinal Fran- jo Seper, the then Head of the Congregation for the Doc- trine of Faith in the Vatican, and by decree from the apos- tolic administrator of the Zagreb Archdiocese, Mons. Franjo Kuharic. Coming to that suburban parish, he initiated a kind of “door to door” pastoral work, looking for those who be- lieved and were willing to actively join the life of their par- ish. Owing to his experience in pastoral work, he saw that it was impossible to join together the rural and the urban men- tality. Thus he obtained from the Church authorities per- mission to divide his parish i.e. establish another parish in the town of Karlovac. His work in Karlovac-Hrnetic was interrupted by the decree of the apostolic administrator Franjo Kuharic who entrusted him with the pastoral care of the Croatian emi- grants in Toronto in May, 1969. Since the parish priest of Toronto, Dr. Dragutin Kam- ber, died only several days upon his arrival, the then chap- lain Josip Gjuran was appointed parish priest of Our Lady Queen of Croatia parish in Toronto. The work of the parish priest Josip Gjuran in Toronto is presented in the book through the description of his meet- ings with parishioners, visits to families, and his organizing of parish social activities. His sermons were always clear and determinate. Using theological vocabulary, he made the truths of faith close to the people by using examples from everyday life, thus creating in them fertile soil for Christian sacramental life. In order to upgrade his pastoral work, he brought new priests and religious sisters. A special aspect of his pastoral ef- forts was the Mississauga “Parish Park”, where he sought to strengthen the community through celebrating Masses, or- ganizing various processions on Holy Days, and celebrating cultural events, with many of the faithful attending. Aware of the importance of mass media, Father Gjuran founded his own radio station and turned the parish bulletin into the bulletin of other Croatian parishes in Ontario. In order to preserve the Croatian national and Catho- lic awareness among the emigrants, Father Gjuran paid special attention to the activity of the “‘Kardinal Stcpinac’ Parish Saturday School”, attended by up to 900 children in some years. Although facing numerous difficulties, he al- ways managed to obtain good quality teachers and princi- pals for the school. He organized the children’s transporta- tion and started many additional school activities: tambura- playersy7 ’ bands, children’s choirs, as well as various cultural and sports events. 2 * A “tambura” is a Croatian national string instrument, mostly used in folklore music. 412 Summary By preserving the national awareness of his faithful, he has managed to defend the honor of the Croatian flag from the attempt to present it as an “Ustasha flag”. He managed to persuade the Toronto school authorities that the Croatian children speak Croatian, and not “Serbo-Croatian”, and he succeeded in having the street on which the parish church and the pastoral center are located named “Croatia Street”. With the support of the Archdiocese of Toronto, he built a new parish pastoral center next to the church in order to have a place where he could meet with his parishioners more easily. He was always close to his parishioners and loyal to the Archbishops of Toronto under whom he was serving: James Charles McGuigan, Philip Francis Pocock, Gerald Emmet Carter, and Aloysius Matthew Ambrozic. To his joy, the To- ronto Archbishops and the Croatian faithful respected him and welcomed his pastoral activities. In order to encourage the parishioners in their life of faith, he invited missionaries, theologians and bishops from Croa- tia, as well as singers, tambura-players and cultural perform- ers, who reminded the parishioners of their native lands of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He organized several spiritual retreats for his faithful (of all ages), as well as several parish missions whose solemnities and processions would gather over 10,000 of the Croatian faithful. Due to such a powerful activity and impact on the people, the Yugoslav Communist regime did not favor his work, al- though it took place in faraway Toronto. Gjuran knew this. This is why he did not visit his homeland. Fr. Gjuran knew that they would take away his passport and he would not be able to return to his faithful. Who can ever repay the tears that were falling down his face when his mother was calling him from her deathbed: “Jozek, please come, I am dying!” His tears had barely dried, when there was another funeral he was not able to attend: His father’s. He kept his grief to himself, for he knew he was doing it out of love for Jesus who is the only true “Way, Truth and Life”. The notorious Yugoslav au- thorities kept accusing Gjuran before the Church authorities, and even the Holy Sec, through their embassy in Toronto. 413 Z1V0T ZA BOGA, CRKVU ! HRVAISKI NAROD • Pnnosi za ¿ivotopis svecemka Josipa Gjurana He was not one for receiving Church honours, but what pained him was the injustice because of which persons of the Church conceded before godless worldly authorities. The Yugoslavian Government layed accusations upon him to the Vatican and to the Holy See and it was because of this that he was never named a monsignor, even though the Archbishop of Zagreb and the Archbishop of Toronto sought this. Also significant was his attitude towards the politics of the Communist regime in Yugoslavia who wanted to con- trol the Croatian emigrants. Catholic priests were a special target of the said regime. On the North American continent, it was the Toronto parish priest Josip Gjuran. When he re- alized that attempts were made in Yugoslavia to subject the Catholic Church through the so called “Theological Society of Krscanska sadasnjost”, he became very determined and direct in his letters to Croatian prelates - warning them of the possible consequences of any compromise with the Communist regime. Among Croatian priests in Canada, he most certainly was not the one “ extrachorum cantans - singing outside the choir”; in other words, against priestly harmony and togeth- erness. Although attempts were made to accuse him of it, he was merely defending the freedom of action of the Catholic Church within a free nation and a free country. He was well aware that he could not achieve it in a single day, but was not ready to sacrifice the Gospel for any human or worldly ad- vantage. After 30 years of serving as a parish priest in Toronto, Reverend Gjuran retired on 1 July 1998. Towards the end of that same month, he returned to his homeland Croatia, to Zagreb. It was with great joy and gratitude that he met with Pope John Paul II in the Croatian national Marian shrine of Marija Bistrica when, on 3 October 1998, the Pope beatified the servant of God Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac. Describing the work of Rev. Josip Gjuran in Toronto, the Zagreb Archbishop, Cardinal Josip Bozanic, wrote in his let- ter of 10 June 1998 that he was “a true pillar not only of the Croatian flock in Toronto and Canada, but also of our entire flock living abroad”. 414 Summary Moreover, Cardinal Bozanic stated that Rev. Gjuran was “relentless in leading numerous pastoral activities in his par- ish, founded a new parish, and, with his life as a priest, served as an example to his spiritual assistants, religious sisters, and all those providing spiritual care to the Croats of the North American continent”. At the same time, Cardinal Bozanic pointed out: “Dur- ing the Homeland War, you did not forget Croatia or Bos- nia and Herzegovina. Especially through the Croatian Cari- tas, you wiped many tears and brought consolation to nu- merous war victims. You were always a loyal aide within the large local Church headed by the Archbishop of Toronto and his staff members, always most understanding towards nu- merous Croatian faithful and their priests. You never forgot the value of the Croatian cultural heritage and were always preserving, developing and supporting it everywhere (...), al- though the conditions were not easy for the Croatian emi- grants, particularly during the rule of the Communist regime in Croatia. Your strong faith, as well as love and respect for the servant of God Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac; devotion to the Zagreb Archbishops, Cardinals Franjo Seper and Fran- jo Kuharic, have marked in a special way your service to the Church as a priest.” The present Toronto Archbishop, Cardinal Thomas Col- lins, in his letter dated 3 March 2013, while thanking God “for the wonderful witness of pastoral love shown by Fr. Gjuran to the people of this Archdiocese as well as to those in his homeland”, points out that Rev. Gjuran “has served so faith- fully in the priesthood of Jesus Christ, not only in Croatia but also in the Archdiocese of Toronto«. At the end of his com- ment of the present book, Cardinal Collins has expressed the following wish: “May God abundantly bless him and all of the people of Croatia.”277 May the realizations resulting from the reading of this book enrich all its readers, inspiring them to live a true life of faith. That is, after all, the primary sense and goal of priestly service to which he has remained dedicated and faithful all his life. The apostolic fervor of Father Josip Gjuran bears char- acteristic marks of his native Croatian people, so that the reading of this book shall encourage all Croats to be proud of their nation who has been faithfully keeping and advanc- ing its Catholic heritage for fourteen centuries. At the same time, those who belong to other nations shall see that love for one’s own people makes it possible to appreciate other nations as well, because we are all called to the knowledge of God and eternal salvation through Jesus Christ. May the priestly example of Father Gjuran serve as an inspiration to the youth to answer Christ’s calling and em- brace priestly service. It would be an evangelical and human act of nobleness and gratitude to a faithful priestly service born out of firm faith deriving from Jesus’ Real Presence in the Church and in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist, as described in the present book. May the priestly example of Father Gjuran encourage both children and the young to generously respond to Christ’s call and to embrace the priestly vocation.
