An Introduction to
Thermodynamic Cycle
Simulations for Internal
Combustion Engines
Jerald A. Caton, Department of Mechanical Engineering,
Texas A M University, College Station, USA
An introduction to basic thermodynamic engine cycle simulations,
providing a substantial set of results
The use of cycle simulations is an important aspect of engine development, and yet there is
limited comprehensive documentation available on the formulations, solution procedures,
and detailed results. Since the 1960s, engine cycle simulations have evolved to their current
highly sophisticated status. With the concurrent development of fast and readily available
computers, these simulations are used in routine and advanced engine development
activities throughout the world. This book provides an introduction to basic thermodynamic
engine cycle simulations, and provides a substantial set of results for spark-ignition, internal
combustion engines.
• Includes comprehensive and detailed documentation of the mathematical foundations
and solutions required for thermodynamic engine cycle simulations
• Includes the most comprehensive presentation on the use of the second law of
thermodynamics related to 1C engines
• Includes a detailed evaluation of the formation of nitric oxides emissions as functions of
engine operating and design parameters
• Provides seven case studies illustrating the use of the cycle simulation as well as current
information on the efficient design and operation of 1C engines
• Closes with a summary of the thermodynamic features that relate to engine efficiency and
performance
