SUMMARY
“Up there in the North, a part of my people live
free and rejoice the freedom they had fought for,
and after our victory we shall rejoice our freedom,
Lazo Angelovski
Analysing the life path of our teacher and revolutionary Lazo
Angelovski, we come to a string of new cognisant facts that supple-
ment his personality, character and work, throwing light to the un-
known episodes of his childhood, education and revolutionary ac-
tivities, thus filling in the gaps that have been unknown up to the
present moment.
We are pleased to give our modest contribution to the fur-
ther enlightening of his great deed by undertaking a lot of corre-
spondence and discussions with his close relatives, friends and as-
sociates whose statements and other collected materials are set forth
in this work.
Bearing in mind his educational and revolutionary activity
we had to conduct a number of field investigations. Therefore, we
first visited his native village of Gra'deno, and then the cities Fiorina
(Lerin), Kostur and Bitola and the villages of Buf, German, @elevo,
Dolno Dupeni, Brajcino and Smilevo. Regretfully, due to the objec-
tive reasons, we were not given access to the archival documents in
Fiorina. We are certainly sure that there can be found other authen-

tic documents that can throw a new light about his education and
revolutionary activities, especially those from the period during the
Civil War in Greece. Of course, this could be made possible only
when the Greek archives become available to our historians.
Carrying out our research in all the available documents and
sources we came to an idea, and agreed upon, that his significant
teaching and revolutionary activity should be elaborated in a sepa-
rate scientific study. This idea has been realised by publishing the
book: “Lazo Angelovski, a teacher and a revolutionary”. The book
is contained of 144 pages. It opens with the foreword prepared by
Dr. Blagoj Stoicovski, who acquaints the reader with the historical
past of the Macedonian people and gradually enters the life story of
the Angelovski family. However, the focus is put on the educational
and revolutionary activity of Lazo Angelovski. According to Dr.
Stoicovski, ‘the significance of this really great son of Macedonia
reflects in a permanent historical heritage as the period of his edu-
cational and revolutionary activity becomes more distant in time
The foreword concludes with comments and compliments for the
author of this work.
The book is contained of 10 chapters. They are:
Ethnographic data about the village of Gra'deno,
The childhood of Lazo Angelovski,
The Angelovski family between the two World Wars,
Lazo Angelovski during the Second World War,
Lazo Angelovski’s educational activity in NR Macedonia
Popular teachers training courses in Aegean Macedonia,
Sending the children away to the People’s Republics,
Lazo Angelovski’s tragic death
A symbol of disobedience,
Lazo Angelovski’s associates
134
A listing of consulted and quoted literature, sources, photos, his-
torical maps and other material used have been included at the end
of the book.
The first chapter opens with a description of the location of
the village of Gra'deno, the native place of Lazo Angelovski. The
reader can understand that this village is in Mala Prespa (Lower
Prespa) and lies some 8 km from Golemoto i Maloto Prespansko
Ezero (the Big and the Little Prespa Lake) in the border three angle
of Albania, Greece and Republic of Macedonia. The chapter makes
known the origin of the name of the village (Gra'deno) and the
conditions and reasons of the exodus of the local population from
this part of Macedonia after the Civil War in Greece.
The next chapter speaks about the childhood of Lazo
Angelovski. The data about his parents, his close relatives, and the
period of his primary and secondary education have been supported
by documents. We focus on the years he had spent in the Fiorina
High School, his expel and return to school. The chapter reveals the
real nature of his ‘kind’ Greek teachers who had never failed to
remind him that if he was not a Greek, than there was no place for
him. Lazo could not accept this slender and national degradation,
on the contrary, it had caused an inner unrest and revolt and he had
accused the Greek reactionary circles of nonrecognition of the
Macedonians living in the Aegean part of Macedonia. However,
despite all these problems, Lazo managed to complete successfully
the Fiorina High School in 1941.
The third chapter presents the data about the Angelovski
family between the two World Wars. The historical division of Prespa
among the united Balkan states after the World War II, and after the
Greek-Turkish War, has been supported by many documents. It is
also included the period of the exodus of the population from Mala
135
Prespa and the villages near the border. Further, we can find data
about hunting of the komita (persons who rebel against tyranny, or
who fight for a national cause), organised by the French, Greek and
Serbs allies. In addition to this, the revolutionary activity of Angele
Donevski has been included. After his death, at the time of breaking
of the World War II, his sons decided to take the father’s name for
their own surname. The chapter goes on with description of the revo-
lutionary activity of the Angelovski brothers, Petre, Stavre, Boris,
Philip, Klime and Atanas. We publish for the first time Philip’s let-
ter of protest addressed to the TMO (Secret Macedonian
Organisation). In the letter he insists Petre Angelovski’s killers to
be punished. The progressive political activity of Stavre and Philip
in the USA, Boris and Klime with the Democratic Army of Greece,
and Atanas with the People” Liberation Army in the Vardar
Macedonia, are also set in this chapter.
Very little has been written about the period of Lazo
Angelovski’s life during the World War II. That is why we want to
acquaint our readers with some new facts about his activity before
and after this period. Searching for the truth, our investigations led
us to the conclusion that the initial political activity of Lazo
Angelovski was closely related to the creation of the first progres-
sive political parties in Lower Prespa, the stopover of the battalion
“Goce”, and the contacts he was maintaining with the first partisan
organisers in Lower Prespa. Here, we can find information about
the start up of the first teacher-training course in Kostur. We reckon
that the reasons why Lazo had left the course and returned to Prespa
have been explained in details, as well.
Further on, the book disclose the attitude that Lazo had towards the
Greek monarchy, the reasons why he left for Macedonia, and the
manner how he after these turmoil events began his educational
activity in liberated Bitola on 10 June, 1944. Moreover, the reader
136
finds out new facts about the termination of the first teachers train-
ing course, his teaching activity in Brajcino and Smilevo, establish-
ing of children’s homes in Skopje and Tetovo, and finally, his defi-
nite moving to the free part of the Aegean Macedonia, thus continu-
ing his educational activity on the other side of the border, in Lower
Prespa.
The book also describes the conditions and political circum-
stances under which the first Macedonian popular courses operated
in German and @elevo. It gives a special attention to the historical
significance of the teacher Lazo Angelovski upon the start up of the
first popular teachers training courses in the Aegean Macedonia. It
also details the operation of the cultural- folklore group, founded by
the People’s Liberation Front, but under the supervision of Lazo
Angelovski. As reading this passage, the reader will easily compre-
hend that this group, cultural and educational at the same time, had
been the basic core of spreading the national awareness among the
population in the Aegean part of Macedonia. Its programme and
folklore performance had given the local residents a chance to feel
the beauty of the Macedonian word and music. We are glad and
proud to inform the readers that about 180 Macedonian primary
schools, with over 10.000 pupils, were in operation in the Aegean
Macedonia by 1948. We deeply believe that the latter mainly owes
to the great merit of Lazo Angelovski, who for this occasion was
promoted to chief inspector, in charge for all Macedonian schools
in the Aegean Macedonia.
The seventh chapter in vivid details explains the leaving of
children from the free territories. (The author himself, at the age of
8, left from Gra* deno for Czechoslovakia). Witnessing those events,
we hold that the children’s leaving has never been a getaway from
the free territories of the Aegean Macedonia, but a well organised
departure by the side of the interim democratic Government of
137
Greece, which for this purpose, had set up a special commission
under the supervision of Lazo Angelovski, the chief inspector for
Macedonian schools. Children’s parents had been properly notified
of the intention, moreover, the whole campaign was conducted by
their consent. The organisation network itself witnesses this fact - it
sent the children away and accepted them in the people’s republics
all over Europe. The life of the children in children’s homes was
well organised: they got frequent visits from activists of the Slavo-
Macedonian People’s Liberation Front, the Women’s Antifascist
Front, and a number of ministers of the interim Government of free
Greece. Though the question, why the teacher Lazo Angelovski did
not leave with the children, has been very difficult to reply, we in-
vite the reader to try to find the answer while reading this chapter.
The capture, the torturing and the tragic death of Lazo
Angelovski are explained in the eighth chapter. Here, you can also
see the court charges brought by the Greek authorities against Lazo
Angelovski. At the court he defends himself with the following
words: “A people cannot die by the loss of just one simple indi-
vidual put to death, nor can it be destroyed, on the contrary, that
people resurrects from the spirit of the martyr again and again. The
chapter also reveals his letter written before death. Pressed by the
duty to announce the truth about his tragic death we have decided to
publish it entirely.
Lazo was executed at the age of 23. He was convinced that
his people would never be able to overcome the great loss of fallen
victims that glow in an eternal flame, a memory to a tumultuous
historical past, a reminder of our contemporary national history. After
his death, Lazo becomes a symbol of our people’s disobedience. His
opus is based on the suffering of thousands of Macedonians forced
to wonder world-wide for more than 50 years hoping one day to
return to their forefather’s fireplace. Being far away from their own
138
country, and led by their love for it, some of them have tried to
express their feelings through poetry and prose. They go back in the
past, returning to their lost childhood, to their living in foreign coun-
tries, to the immortal image of Lazo Angelovski, their teacher and
saviour. Long is the list of those who have written of this martyr of
the Civil War in Greece: Risto Angelovski, Alekso Hadzitaskov,
Mihail Keramitciev, Risto Kirjazovski, Hristo Ristovski, Goce
Drobicki, Jordan Konev, Stojan Kiselinovski, Tome Mijovski and
Tasko Mamurovski.
In our opinion, the real point for a complete affirmation of
the shining countenance and opus of our teacher and revolutionary
Lazo Angelovski is the Primary School bearing his name, and built
with funds raised among our compatriots in the overseas countries.
The book includes 50 brief biographical summaries of Lazo
Angelovski’s fallen associates. It reveals the historical truth about
the decay of the progressive forces during the Civil War in Greece,
the failed promises of the interim government of democratic Greece,
and the final defeat of the Democratic Army in Greece.
After all above mournful and touching events it is evident
that for the first time in our national history the Macedonian popu-
lation of this part of Macedonia had totally been expelled by way of
force and physical extermination. The newcomers, Vlachs from
Thessally, are today those who create “the Greek” population. A list
of quoted references, foot notes and the author’s biography have
been included at the end of this book.
