In this book Lubomyr Luciuk delineates the efforts of the established Ukrainian-Canadian community to rescue and resettle Ukrainian refugees, despite the indifference and even hostility of the Canadian government. He shows how this triangular relationship coloured federal attitudes to both the resident old-guard Ukrainian population and the ancestral Ukrainian homeland.Luciuk draws on personal diaries and correspondence, over 300 in-depth interviews, and previously unmined government archives to interpret the meaning and value of the Ukrainian experience in Canada. Using a host of contextual sidelights to illuminate larger historical issues, Luciuk produces an account that is both scholarly and intimate. Above all, he reveals how the Ukrainian-Canadian identity has been manipulated, negotiated and recast during the 100 years of its existence.Treating matters that were virtually incendiary in their day, Luciuk tells his story with journalistic skill and a clear interpretive vision. "Searching for Place" is a thorough, meticulous and original contribution to the study of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada | |

Luciuk Toronto University of Toronto Press [2016] © 2000 1 online resource txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Description based on online resource; title from PDF title page (publisher’s Web site, viewed Jan. 06, 2016) Canada was not in a welcoming mood when Ukrainian and other refugees began arriving in Canada after the second world war. "Searching for Place" is a thorough, meticulous and original contribution to the study of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1890-1920 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte Politik Refugees Government policy Canada Refugees Ukraine History 20th century Ukrainians Canada History 20th century Einwanderung (DE-588)4013960-8 gnd rswk-swf Flüchtling (DE-588)4017604-6 gnd rswk-swf Ukrainer (DE-588)4061497-9 gnd rswk-swf Kanada Kanada (DE-588)4029456-0 gnd rswk-swf Ukraine (DE-588)4061496-7 gnd rswk-swf Kanada (DE-588)4029456-0 g Ukrainer (DE-588)4061497-9 s Einwanderung (DE-588)4013960-8 s Geschichte 1890-1920 z 1\p DE-604 Ukraine (DE-588)4061496-7 g Flüchtling (DE-588)4017604-6 s 2\p DE-604 http://www.degruyter.com/doi/book/10.3138/9781442679672 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
