Physics of Partially
Ionized Plasmas
Plasma is one of the four states of matter; the other three being solid, liquid
and gas. It is formed by heating a gas, which ionizes its molecules or atoms. A
partially ionized plasma consists of charged particles, namely positive ions and
negative electrons along with a large number of neutral particles. Partially ionized
plasmas exist in the early universe, molecular clouds, diffuse interstellar gas, solar
atmosphere, earths ionosphere and laboratory plasmas including fusion plasmas.
The book begins with a brief discussion of the characteristics of partially ionized
plasmas in the early universe and other astrophysical and laboratory situations.
Partially ionized plasmas are essentially collisional and can be studied within the
framework of several possible forms of multifluid descriptions. The equilibrium and
the wave phenomena are investigated using these multifluid forms. The influence
of magnetic induction on neutral particles emerges as one of the main novelties of
the plasmas. The dynamo mechanism in partially ionized plasma reveals particularly
interesting features of wide applicability.
Vinod Krishan was Senior Professor at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics,
Bangalore. She has published more than hundred research papers. Her recent
publications include the book Plasmas: The First State of Matter (Cambridge, 2014).
Professor Krishan s major research interests are in the area of space and astrophysical
plasmas.
