Life and work of Venczel Jozsef
Introductory study of this volume presents the most important milestones in
the life and work of Venczel Jozsef (1913-1972), in order to nuance - and even
bring to reality - the image perpetuated (especially after 1989) about Venczel.
Posed primarily as a developer of public policy, national-minority policy analyst,
as a prominent member of the new generation of Hungarian intellectuals after
Trianon. Venczel was primarily analyst of cultural, agricultural, educational,
demographic policies related to the Hungarian community in Transylvania. His
studies, some circumstances of his youth, but perhaps some features of his way
of thinking (positivism, precision) led him to study of the village, rural issues,
Transylvanian culture with scientific methods, an approach that himself, in es-
pecially in youth rarely referred to as „sociology . In all investigations aimed
solving a specific social, political problem and not purely scientific purposes,
yet never abandoned methodological thoroughness and scrupulousness, so
that became very popular for this feature among contemporary intellectuals.
He was fascinated by the methods of Bucharest School of Dimitrie Gusti, who
even invited him to spend a semester in his institute (actully Venczel studied
law at Cluj). Throughout life Venczel remained a big supporter of monographic
method. He was an intellectual conservative minded, profoundly influenced
by the social thought of the Catholic Church influenced then by the second
social encyclical, „Quadragesimo Anno of Pope Pius XI. Being an anticommu-
nist, anti-Marxist, and as his analyses did not fit the policy of denationalization
of Hungarians in Romania by the Romanian political class of all time, he was
imprisoned and then sidelined in the second part of life, since 1945. (Only for
short time taught statistics and demographics at Bolyai University in 1946-47,
respectively was employed at the Laboratory of Sociology of the University of
Cluj in the period 1969 to 1971, helped in getting this job by Ernd Gall influ-
ential Marxist professor, who after his death would try arrange publication of
parts of his works, especially those of rural sociology, trying to dupe the cenzor-
ship of national communist authorities).

The social environment of Bucharest during Venczel
Jozsef’s study trip
This study deals with the social-professional context of Jozsef Venczel s study
trip to Bucharest in 1936. It does not a priori establish contextual criteria, but
it takes into consideration their importance. Thus, the „Gusti-school is studied
in relation to the superior political environment, then relationships with so-
called collateral organisations are analysed, such as the Legionary movement
and other, national or foreign political or scientific institutions or organisations.
In the last part the author makes an inventory of Venczel s life in Bucharest
which have had an influence on his professional and moral development. This
study also pleads for a mandatory contextual analysis of social sciences works
written in the period between the two world wars.

The Social Statistics course book by Venczel at Bolyai
University
This study presents and analyses the content of the lithographed social statis-
tics course entitled „Chapters from social statistic written by Venczel Jozsef for
the Bolyai University in the 1945-1946 academic year. The topic of this course
belongs to two major branches of sociology: demography or the study of popu-
lation and social stratification.
Through content analysis we may identify a theoretical and methodologi-
cal approach, developed at the level of the 40-ies. The book is divided into 7
chapters and 17 sub-chapters and it consists of a total of 85 pages.
The first chapters deal with the empirical theories and processes regarding
the study of population using the methods of social statistics and the termi-
nology of those times. Then the course focuses on data and the demographic
analysis of Transylvania s population from the decades preceding the publica-
tion of the course. The last two chapters deal with social structure and strati-
fication, analysed both theoretically and empirically, using census data from
1910, 1930 and 1940-41, as well as other data on the employed population.

Hypotheses and interferences
ABSTRACTS
This essay addresses the issue of abroad migration towards developed origi-
nally by Venczel Jozsef - one of the promoters of interwar Hungarian language
sociology and demography from Romania - namely in the context of the back-
ground of the economic phenomenon that characterizes Szeklerland region for
more than a century. We discussed the issue of residual society in Transylvania,
a community that is (re) shaped by massive international migration waves, and
analyze complex effects of such mobility on society, with specific demographic
gaps with overrepresentation of inactives, those with weaker skills, with lack of
opening for change, etc. To address the social, economic, or political, issues in
the context of our society as one with great emigrational potential and a nar-
row sociological profile, in term of sending society, which leaves an important
segment of the population, without having a flow of immigration, or entry al-
logenic population, helps the correct interpretation of current social issues. We
believe that relevant analyzes of Venczel, based on statistical data about (e)
migration not only in historical perspective, support the discipline of sociology,
and in a more pragmatic, open onto an applied and / or public social science,
which is missing from current landscape of social sciences.

The effect of the Bucharest School of Sociology on the
Jozsef Venczel’s work
In this material I will try to trace the spiritual and methodological path followed
by Venczel Jozsef in his village research work, leading him to the Bucharest
School of Sociology, and finally to become a disciple of monographic sociology
of Dimitrie Gusti. In presenting this professional way, firstly I will detail his early
professional socialization, which already began in high school, completed in
Miercurea Ciuc, after which I will speak of the time spent in Cluj, which had as
important stations the Transylvanian Youth group and its village seminary, the
Erdelyi Muzeum Egyesulet (Transylvanian Museum Society) institute, the half-
year of study spent in Bucharest, and the period after his return to Cluj.
In this paper I will focus only on those writings of Venczel that led his ori-
entation towards village research. As a second step, I analyse the effect results
Gusti s sociological monograph upon Venczel, as evidenced by his work.

Hungarian agrarian policy in Transylvania and the
Work of J6zsef Venczel (1940-1945)
The Romanian land reform in 1921 was one of the most contradictory acts of
the Romanian Kingdom. Social tensions were on the order of the day before the
war too, but the land reform not only it did not alleviate them, but contributed
to the regression of the agriculture during the interwar period. Besides, in Tran-
sylvania it also stirred up ethnic conflicts too, by containing regulations against
the Hungarian land property form Transylvania.
After the second Vienna Award, the agrarian policy implemented in North-
ern Transylvania was formulated as a response to the land reform form 1921
and the agrarian policy of the Romanian Kingdom. On one hand the Hungarian
government initialized the revision of the Romanian land reform, and on the
other hand they made effort to increase the Hungarian land property.
Venczel Jozsef was one of the most qualified experts on the issues regard-
ing the agrarian problems of Transylvania. Starting from the 1930s he studied
closely the region s rural life, and after the second Vienna Award, as the direc-
tor of the statistical department of the Hungarian Economical Association from
Transylvania he led the research on the 1921th land reform. In 1945 he deliv-
ered a land reform project for the National Democratic Front.
The study treats the Hungarian agrarian policy in Transylvania focusing on
the activity of Venczel.
