The Self-Organization of Hungarians
in Romania 1989-1990
The Romanian Revolution of 1989 is a relatively popular topic in the second-
ary literature of history, political sciences or sociology. And this popularity start-
ed immediately after the turn of regime, although the perspectives of research
have altered considerably as time has passed. The political debates launched im-
mediately after the events of December 1989 have focused on the first months
of the change of Romanian regime. Consequently, in this period the first pub-
lications about the Romanian revolution were based mainly on the memories
of those actors who directly participated in the events. These memories were
completed by oral history and documentary sources gathered by the authors.
As the time passed, the scholarly prospect of the revolution was widened and a
few contradictory analyses have appeared. In many cases these texts were influ-
enced by the current political context of the country.
A shift in research started to appear from the 2000s when other types of anal-
yses gained more field of knowledge. The historical approach turned towards
new professional and ideological perspectives. These works are focusing on the
outbreak of the revolution and regime change from another view. Thus, the in-
terpretation of the events, the change of power and the democratization process
are investigated in depths, with a critical and interdisciplinary approach. This
new standpoint with strong international contextualization that was initiated
and promoted first of all by Vladimir Tismaneanu and Stelian Tanase, created
the framework of several political and historical texts.
The so called “External perspective”, i.e. the perspective of the European and
North American scholars, introduced a new knowledge on the Romanian revolu-
tion and regime change studies. Standing outside the Romanian political and so-
cial “pressure” they were able to analyze these events without having the burden
of the past. Peter Siani-Davies and Tom Gallagher gave so far the most compre-
hensive analysis of the history, evolution and echo of the Romanian revolution.
Once with the establishment of the Romanian Institute for Research on Na-
tional Minorities in Cluj-Napoca, a strong institutional background has been
created for the scholarly research on national minorities in Romania. In 2010,
when a research project on 1989 was launched at the initiative of Nandor Bardi,
several goals were established: In the first research phase, documentary mate-
rial about the period December 1989 and May 1990 was gathered, with the sup-
port of the RIRNM, the “Jakabffy Elemer” Foundation and of the “Pogress” Foun-
dation. Using this material we compiled chronologies of the 1989 events in the
most important cities in Transylvania and Bucharest. The work was performed
by young local scholars where the research took place.
Consequently, there were collected several types of materials regarding the
participation, the activities and actions of Hungarians and other national minor-

ities during the Revolution: archival materials, copies of privately owned sources
and newspaper articles, reports, audio and video recordings. Material was col-
lected for 16 Transylvanian towns (Arad, Baia Mare, Bra$ov, Cluj-Napoca, Cristu-
ru Secuiesc, Gheorgheni, Miercurea Ciuc, Odorheiu Secuiesc, Oradea, Satu Mare,
Sfantu Gheorghe, Sighetu Marmafiei, Targu Mure§, Targu Secuiesc, Timisoara
and Zalau) and Bucharest.
Our research team realized 82 structured interviews in total (based on in-
terview guidelines) with Hungarian and Romanian intellectuals living in Tran-
sylvania, and who played determinant role in the local events in 1989 and 1990.
They provided us background information in order to understand and analyze
the process of self-organization of the Hungarian minority in the first months
after the revolution. The gathered historical documents and the interviews are
hold by the Documentation Centre of Romanian Institute for Research on Na-
tional Minorities. The chronologies of the local events between November 1989
and May 1990 are available on the website of the Institute (http://ispmn.gov.ro/
page/cronologia-evenimentelor-din-1989).
The research was completed by writing up twelve case studies which are pub-
lished in this book. Our goal was to document, to present and interpret a less
known facet of the change of regime in Romania, namely the role and self-orga-
nization of minorities/Hungarians. Open intention of the research coordinators,
who are simultaneously the editors of this volume, was to present the minor-
ity Hungarian scholarly narrative of the events, too. We hope that this volume
will help to integrate this kind of speech in the Romanian historiography. At the
same time, the research has an innovative character too, because it introduces
a new element in the study of this phenomenon: Compared with Romanian in-
terpretations of the events of 1989, which uses the dominant point of view of
the majority nation, this research and this kind of interpretation focuses on the
events far from the capital city and examines the regime change at micro lev-
els. There were included in the analysis places where the Hungarian population
has and had a significant role, i.e. where the Hungarian community was strong
enough to influence events.
The twelve studies published here have similar structures. A common fea-
ture of the texts is the highlight put on the relationship between Hungarian and
Romanian local leaders. It is analyzing for instance the activity of the ultra-na-
tionalist organization Vatra Romaneasca, the role of the army and of the armed
forces in local and county governments in the period that followed the revolu-
tion. The studies also treats the political influence of the Democratic Alliance of
Hungarians in Romania had in the local political life, the issue of schools (Hun-
garian educational units the re-establishment of an independent Hungarian
university), the issue of aids (and their distribution), the issue of change of elites,
echoes and consequences of the Romanian-Hungarian ethnic conflict in T rgu-
Mure§ (March 1990), and the first free elections in May 1990.
