Summary
Publication of the critical edition of Stanislaw August’s Mémoires and of the Polish
translation of their substantial part allowed for an academic analysis of the content
and the form of the King’s work. The title “mémoires” is a word of ambiguous
nature both in the 18th century French and Polish. It points to certain similarities
of the diary relations to both historical narrative and ways of introducing oneself
verging on autobiography. The King’s Mémoires combine the historical perspective
with presenting the events of universal importance and with disclosing one’s “self”
through the story about private and individual issues. What comes useful in such
a research are terms coined by contemporary researchers of the personal document
discourse: Philippe Lejeune’s concept of “autobiographical pact”, similar approach
of George Gusdorf and Malgorzata Czerminska’s concept of “biographical trian-
gle”, which consists of evidence, profession and challenge. This is the perspective
used for the analysis of the King’s diaries.
Chapter I analyses the challenge approach. This covers ways of establishing
contact with the reader common in Mémoires, as well as informing the reader in
metatextual statements about the strategy of continuation of the story, about the
truthfulness of the account and the credibility of the author who often goes as far
as to try to guide the reader’s perception. Sometimes the reader’s “you” is replaced
by the more inclusive “us” (“I” and “you”). That brings closer the messenger and
the receiver, who also often becomes the judge of the described events. In a way
the author places himself in front of the collective tribunal of the future genera-
tions. That is an exceptionally big challenge, which sits on the thin demarcation
line between moral and political risk. Other signs of the challenge are: elements
of dialogical connection with the reader which imitate direct discussion where
different points of view meet or even an argument with other opinions is present;
positioning the reader in the role of a participant of the communication who can
influence the course of the story; specific use of grammar forms I-we-he and finally,
in the part devoted to the diarist as the ruler, a radical change of the grammatical
person and introducing the third person narrative. This creates a peculiar literary
experience (the transition from the “I-he” mode to the “he-I” mode), which is

a challenge for the reader, who is forced to follow interferences of different points
of view and perspectives. Intensification and distinctness of such procedures mean
that Mémoires stand out amongst the 18 th century personal document writing and
prove the high level of literary self-consciousness and the author’s writing skills in
this respect.
Chapter II shows the methods of unveiling the “P which appears in the Royal
diaries in its distinctness and personal individual nature, as well as presenting emo-
tions and emotional reactions to different turns of events. There are apparent dif-
ferences between volumes I—III and the following ones, which tell the story of the
period after the election. At first the signs of the profession approach are mainly to
do with the private life, personal experiences and emotional sphere, as well as the
feeling of otherness and personal identity. Later on they mainly cover emotional
reactions to do with public issues and the state. The diarist performs the act of
self-creation, invariably manifesting his feeling of uniqueness of his existence and
experience. He attempts to unveil the character of his “I” as a human individual
shaped by experiencing the world and the communication with others. The world
is also presented from the perspective of the reflexive “I” which wants to be re-
cognized and to make others acknowledge and understand its personality and life.
This “I” also reveals basic dimensions of its identity: strongly felt individuality or
even uniqueness, link to own family, immersion in the sphere of intellectual and
cultural, which becomes the internal need and the source of deep experiences and
thoughts. To this effect the author sketches - in several stages - the self-portrait,
which reveals both virtues and flaws of himself, the fluctuations of a human being
over time, ambivalences and ambiguity of internal attributes of a human being.
Experiences are shown in a retrospective, but also through a self-reflection and
analysis of interpersonal communication. Of special character are descriptions of
contacts with the Grand Duchess Catherine, which led to transgressing the norms
of intimacy common at the time. The narrative is used to present the unique “I” of
the human being and then the ruler, to reveal the vision of his own identity - the
image of a person attempting to show roads leading to understanding one’s life and
its specificity, but also to justify one’s acts and decisions. In terms of writing skills
leading to fulfilling those goals the Mémoires deserve a really high mark.
Chapter III offers the ways of representing the world depicted in the diaries,
it describes issues and events depicted, but also points to a sphere of omissions,
formed differently in the first and later volumes. In the narrative the incidents,
events, people and objects which generate the diarist’s experiences are highly diver-
sified; from personal situations to important political issues, arcana of the politics
and odd events or situations, social issues, observations of mentality and aesthetic
matters (garden, theatre). Varied measures were used here: scenes with brilliant
dialogue, generalising thoughts, miniature anecdotes, descriptions of visited places,
stories about minor, amusing facts and about significant public events. The account
is objective, but also some admiration is present, as is irony, satire and humour,
as well as analytical and more general discourse. Detailed narration, descriptions

of places and situations, minor scenes described in a technique verging on narra-
tion techniques of a novel or a romance, portraits of people, dramatized dialogues
- all those demonstrate the depth and uniqueness of the personal experience and
the significance of emotions linked with it. The experience generates the need to
represent the world on a sensory and emotional level, but it also gives rise to an
intellectual approach, reflection on the state and political issues and mechanisms
of the social life. The description of the world is stretched between the synthetic
image and the detail, between seriousness and humour, between presenting issues
of high significance and odd or strange incidents. Hence the diarist presents himself
as a perfect observer and interpreter of varied aspects of reality, which he is able to
look at with seriousness and respect, but also with irony and critical approach. One
of the forms of evidence are numerous portraits of people belonging to different
classes and social circles. They show the actors of the most important events of the
then Europe, and at the same time, demonstrate the fact that the author belonged
to the elite. Their origins are linked to the memoirs of La Grande Mademoiselle,
widely read across Europe, however in the King’s Mémoires they are more varied
- some are short and concise, and others are lengthy, illustrating the personality and
particular psychological traits of the portrayed through the narrative, description
or mini-scenes. They balance presenting good and bad sides of a personality. They
also reveal changes in a depicted person, which take place over time. Another form
of evidence are the passages containing only dialogue, introduced as a mimicry and
acting as an authentication of the relations, as well as presentation of opinions and
arguments of interlocutors. Another way to authenticate the image of the world
was quoting documents in extenso (letters, tickets, diplomatic notes, minutes from
meetings and debates, e.g. Permanent Council, Parliamentary speeches, both the
King’s and other deputies’). They are an integral part of the memoirs as the direct
evidence of actions and views of the ruler and statesmen of the time. The evidence
written down in still unpublished so-called Preliminary documents is of a different
character. They cover the events of the years 1794-1798 which never got a full
description in the diary. These are short notes, often of a diary nature, to do with
every day events, written in a matter-of-fact, factual manner. First of all they pre-
sent the King’s activity during the Kosciuszko Uprising and later his stay in Grod-
no and Saint Petersburg. There is a noticeable attempt to show Stanislaw August’s
participation in the history of the last days of the Polish Republic as he himself
saw it and judged it and as he would have liked it be perceived by the readers,
especially by the future generations. The accusations (formed then and later) that
the King was passive and isolated are discredited here, as are the allegations of the
Uprising leaders’ antipathy towards him, and of him avoiding contacts with the
army and Warsaw residents. Indirectly they reveal the intentions inscribed into the
whole Mémoires.
In Final notes the King’s diaries are placed within the context of other rulers’
accounts (of Louis XIV of France, Frederick the Great and Catherine the Great),
as well as contemporary diaries and autobiographies (of Jean-Jacques Rousseau,

Jçdrzej Kitowicz, Marcin Matuszewicz, Franciszek Karpinski and others). Thanks
to that the special character and qualities (both literary and cognitive) of Stanislaw
August’s memoirs are shown, as well as their special place within the diary writ-
ing of the time. Mémoires use varied methods, techniques and narrative tones.
On the one hand there are dry, factual pieces of information, on the opposite
end - literary techniques close to novel narration. Self-creation and representation
of the world complement and enrich each other. Intriguing variety of Mémoires
consists of presenting issues of public and political significance, as well as minor
personal and private incidents. Varied story tonalities coexist in them, combining
a dramatic tension with mischief, humour and self-mockery, overtones of grave
solemnity with those of playful, anecdotal and entertaining character, and all of
this in the continuous contact with the reader, constantly referred to and obliged
to follow used methods of authenticating the account. There is an exceptional
density of writing measures used to evoke all three autobiographical approaches:
evidence, profession and challenge, as well as the conscious use of those methods
to fulfil the author’s goals. Thinking about the reader, he performs a one-of-a-kind
examination of conscience, places himself in front of the jury of the future gener-
ations to judge him from the perspective of the time after familiarizing them-
selves with his own, subjective, but intentionally honest testimony. He presents
the events of his life as fulfilment of his duties and meeting of his challenges. He
wants to see sense and purpose in them. He wants to be listened to, he wants to
convince others that he used every opportunity to influence the course of events,
being the ruler with weaknesses and flaws, but also one trying as hard as he could
to use all his advantages to fulfil his momentous historical role. All those elements
make the Mémoires a piece of exceptional character, quality and significance in the
diary writing of the time.
