Deportations from Polish lands
to the Soviet Union in 1944/1945.
A comparative perspective,

The question of deportation of civilians from the Polish
territory to the Soviet Union in 1945 (or already in 1944)
was the main topic of the meeting organised by the
Katowice Branch of the Institute of National Remem-
brance and the Silesian Freedom and Solidarity Centre
on February 16, 2015 in the premises of the latter, under
the title: „Deportations from Polish lands to the USSR
in 1944/1945. A comparative perspective” The subject
of this small conference, the outcome of which is the
book you are holding in your hands, must be made
more precise. What we mean by ‘Polish lands’ is both
the territories being part of the Second Polish Republic,
lost as a result of border changes (the so called Eastern
Borderlands) and the lands that became part of the
new Polish state after those geopolitical changes took
place (the so called Western and Northern Territories,

or Regained Territories). Before that, they were part of
the eastern frontier of the German Reich. However, we
must remember that in early 1945 (when the deporta-
tion operation started) the formal and legal status of
those lands was not yet very clear; strictly speaking
these were not ‘Polish lands’ yet back then. We also
need to remember that people who were victims of
Soviet transportations were not always Poles. While
people who were transported from the Vilnius Region
were in fact Poles (mainly Home Army soldiers), those
who were transported from Lower Silesia were mainly
Germans. Other examples are East Prussia and Upper
Silesia, where apart from evident Germans, people who
were transported away were also indigenous people
e.g. from: Upper Silesia, Masuria, Varmia, with various
degrees of Polish national identity, or without any
traces of Polish identity whatsoever.
We invited a circle of historians dealing with the
history of the post-war period, in particular in a re-
gional dimension. The whole range of their interests
also included the subject of deportations. The scope
of our meeting was first of all to attempt to make an
overview of the problem of deportation in various
regional cases: in Lower and Upper Silesia, Pomerania
on the Vistula River, Varmia and Masuria, the Vilnius
Region. At the same time, our scope was to establish
the status of knowledge and studies concerning the
above problems in a regional dimension. We tried
to find some common elements and discrepancies
between particular cases. We did not focus only on
civilians, as one of the important chapters in Soviet
deportations from the Polish lands was arrest and
transportation of Home Army soldiers and officers to

forced labour camps (it was particularly so in the case
of the Vilnius Region).
As the conference was held in the form of a studio
meeting, focusing mainly on discussing particular, syn-
thetic presentations, the form of this publication has
been very much influenced by the meeting’s formula.
The work is almost an accurate, shorthand-type record
of the discussion held on February 16, 2015 in Katowice,
with only slight, stylistic modifications and only a little
abridged. This is probably the first meeting of this kind,
during which the participants made an effort to take
a closer look at the problem of deportations to the
USSR from various regional perspectives. Even though
the materials created as a result of that meeting might
seem a little bit like draft copies, we decided that they
were so important for the development of future stud-
ies of the problem that publishing them in the form of
a book seemed to us to be by all means necessary. It
is particularly valid as in many cases we are still at the
very beginning of the path of fully understanding and
describing this phenomenon.
Considering such assumptions the book became
quite unique. After usually short articles of particular
authors, grouped into three main sections, there are
records of discussions on their papers, including ad-
ditional conclusions and complementing some prob-
lems touched upon in the presentations. The papers
are accompanied by a review of the most important
literary references.
The first section is composed of three related presen-
tations, dedicated to deportation of Home Army sol-
diers and - to a lesser degree - of civilians mainly from
the Vilnius Region. Dariusz Rogut addressed the prob-

lem of Home Army soldiers deported from 1944 to the
USSR, focusing mainly on their presence in the complex
Soviet system of camps. Then, Krzysztof Jatmuzniak
discussed cases of Home Army soldiers from the Vilnius
Region, including the mechanisms of their arrest and
transportation. Finally, Milena Bykowska focused her at-
tention on that group of deported people (civilians and
Home Army soldiers) who were in eastern Ukraine - in
the Donets Basin, particularly in camp No. 240.
The second part of the conference (and of this
book) concerned cases from the northern territories
of today’s Poland - the areas of the Polish-German
borderland at that time. Leszek Belzyt presented a gen-
eral outline of the Soviet policy followed in 1945 with
respect to the inhabitants of East Prussia (Varmia and
Masuria). The very problem of deportations related
with that region was, on the other hand, addressed
by Waldemar Brenda who focused on presenting the
current status of knowledge and existing publications
on the subject. Miros+aw Golon discussed the case of
Pomerania on the Vistula River - a territory which has
been thoroughly studied and relatively best analysed
with respect to those problems (for which M. Golon
deserves the credit).
The last topic discussed at the meeting was related
with Silesia. An overview of studies and general reflec-
tions on the case of Lower Silesia were presented by
Ma+gorzata Ruchniewicz who also formulated further
research demands. The author pointed to a different
context of the social culture of remembrance of to-
day’s inhabitants of Lower Silesia (considering almost
complete replacement of the whole population in that
region after the war) and Upper Silesia inhabitants.

The latter case was discussed by Dariusz W^grzyn
who focused on some characteristic elements of that
region. The region is interesting to that extent that
before September 1, 1939 the Polish-German border
passed through it, and so it determined a different
Soviet policy with respect to those lands, depending
on which part of the region was on the Polish side and
which was on the German side before the war.
