N ALTERNATIVE MEDICAL SYSTEM
EMPHASIZING PREVENTION THROUGH
JL ^ HEALTHY LIVING, POSITIVE MIND —
body-spirit strength, and therapeutics to enhance the
body s innate healing processes, naturopathy has gained
legitimacy in recent years. In AT ture s .Path-the first
comprehensive book to examine the complex history and
culture of American naturopathy---Susan E. ClayleFF tells
the Fascinating story of the movement’s nineteenth-
century roots.
While early naturopaths were sometimes divided by
infighting, they all believed in the healing properties oF
water, nutrition, exercise, the sun, and clean. Fresh air.
Their political activism was vital to their proFessional
formation: they loathed the invasive, depletive practices oF
traditional medicine and protested against medical
procedures that addressed symptoms rather than disease
causes while resisting processed foods, pharmaceuticals,
environmental toxins, and atomic energv. CZayleFf describes
the development oFnaturopathv’s philosophies and
therapeutics and details the eFForts oF its proponents to
institutionalize the field. She recognizes notable
naturopathic leaders, explores whv women doctors,
organizers, teachers, and authors played such a strong role
in the mov ement, and identifies countercultural views-
such as anti vivisection, antivaccination, and vegetarian-
ism---held by idealistic naturopaths From 1896 to
the present.
P zh tracks a radical cultural critique, medical
system, and way oF HFe that links body, soul, mind, and
daily* purpose. It is a must-read For historians oF medicine
and scholars in women’s studies and political history, as
well as for naturopaths and all readers interested in
alternative medicine.

FROM T he: introduction
Late-nineteenth-century naturopaths were an eclectic collection of firebrands who,
despite their vast differences, openly loathed many changes taking place in medicine
at that time. Their ranks were drawn from Germanic practitioners, philosophical
idealists, countless sectarian natural health leaders, self-proclaimed nature doctors with little
or no schooling, advocates of Populism and other political radicals, agrarian advocates, those
wracked by illnesses that did not respond to regular therapeutics, women barred from regular
medical practice, vegetarians, antivivisectionists, religious devotees, spiritual and mental
healers, and anti-vaccinationists. They all shared a self-imposed outsider status that often led
them to reject notions of progress and change connected to industrial innovation or to a
corporate-style monopoly of power and authority.
At the same time, after 1880 change was evident everywhere, particularly in urban areas,
evidenced by massive ethnic immigration; rural migration to northern cities; electrified
transportation; electric lights, which skewed the orderliness of day and night; congested
streets teeming with loud children, vehicles, animals, vendors, and debris; countless saloons;
millions of sporadically employed laborers; and an endless cacophony of tumult, motion, and
frequently, chaos. The changing identity of the cities led some Progressive Era reformers,
including self-appointed medical experts who used public health authority to define disease
and the government measures to control it, to push for social control. Those who believed in
the right to decide their own physical fate saw this as the ultimate affront to their way of life
and their traditions. From the nature practiDoners’ perspective, this control stole common
people’s essential self-determination. It usurped an older, more reassuring approach to illness
and health that asserted the superiority, indeed the purity, of natural methods.
