Mariology of the centos
Summary
Since the beginnings of Christianity literature has con-
stituted an important part of evangelisation. Christians of
the first centuries did not submit pagan literature to critical
review, but were making efforts to get across the message of the
Gospel based on the texts considered by pagans as the ultimate
achievement of their literature. One of the ways to closely tie
pagan literature with Christianity was creating special literary
forms called centos, in which authors tried to express the
beauty and richness of the Gospel by using properly arranged
verses taken from authors such as Homer, Aeschylus, Euripides,
Lycophron and Virgil.
The aim of this monograph is providing answer to the
question of how Virgin Mary is pictured in Christian centos.
The question is how and to what extent it is possible to portray
220
Mariology of the centos
the Mother of Christ, Her life and words, referring to Homer’s
narrative poems, Greek tragedy or Virgil’s works.
Our book is divided into three chapters. The first chapter
deals with Homeric centos, and aims at revealing Mary’s
characteristics from the perspective of Illiad and Odyssey. In
the following chapter, tragedy Christus patiens is the subject of
our analysis; therefore the focus is on the relationship between
biblical Mariology and Mariology based on Greek tragedy. The
final chapter focuses on Virgilian centos and aims at describing
the Mother of God from the perspective of Virgil’s works.
The analyses carried out have led us to draw the following
conclusions:
1. Authors of centos did not manage to show the richness of
biblical Mariology. Homeric poems, Greek tragedy, the works of
Virgil possess neither adequate vocabulary nor proper content,
which would allow to show the full picture of God’s Mother
emerging from the pages of the Holy Bible. This, however, does
not mean that cento authors failed, but only proves their message
is not complete. This lack of completeness is gradable. There is
quite a significant diversity when it comes to describing the figure
of God’s Mother by different centoists. The most comprehensive
picture of Virgin Mary emerges from Homeric centos, which
describe Her as the participant of almost every single period of
the life of Christ: from Annunciation until Ascension. Tragedy
Christus patiens provides a much scarcer description of God’s
Mother, as it gives quite a detailed reflection on Her role in the
Paschal Mystery, but earlier periods of Her life are shown in
a scarce manner. Authors of Virgilian centos only managed to

show Mary in the scenes of Annunciation, birth of Jesus and
the flight into Egypt.
2. The works of Homer, Aeschylus, Euripides, Lycophron
and Virgil are lacking a figure which would be similar to Mary.
Bearing that in mind, centoists create the picture of God’s
Mother building on numerous characters from the world of
gods and people, as well as reaching for pictures coming from
the world of animals and things. The authors do not observe the
division into male/female characters. In this way they highlight
the rich nature of the figure of Mary, whom it is impossible to
fully describe, even if the best qualities and characteristics of
all godesses and women were used. Several divine and human
characters were used by centoists to picture the truths of Mary’s
Divine Motherhood and Virginity. Illustrating certain truths by
means of animals and things shows centoists’ awareness that
to achieve this goal we need to refer to the language of analogy.
Cento authors also use completely new words, or even new
verses, which were absent in the works they used.
3. Using source materials available, centoists managed to
describe the following scenes from the life of Mary: Announ-
ciation, the birth of Jesus, adoration of the Magi, the flight into
Egypt, presentation of Jesus at the temple, the baptism of Jesus,
the temptation of Christ, marriage at Cana, the meeting of
Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross, the Resurrection and
Ascension of Jesus. Although Mary does not witness Christ’s
baptism or temptation, while describing those occurrences
centoists include short digressions about Her. Therefore, the
message of centos seems to be incomplete, since it is lacking in
the scenes of the visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, the finding of
222
Mariology of the centos
Jesus in the temple, information on the anonymous woman in
the crowd, Mary’s talk to Jesus at the Cross. On the other hand,
though, centos broaden the biblical perspective with elements
of patristic Mariology, showing the Mother’s presence at her
Son’s resurrection. Centoists succeed in describing numerous
biblical scenes in chronological order (Homeric centos), yet, the
presentation of biblical Mariology from the paschal perspective
encounters significant difficulties ( patiens), which
manifest themselves in a large number of verses which do not
refer to the source material. Authors’ additions are evidence of
the fact that Greek tragedy is insufficient to portray the figure of
Mary from the paschal perspective.
4. Using the source material by centoists varies in character.
It takes place in four different ways:
a) An author of a cento takes a given part of the text out
of its original context and puts it into quite a different
context, which gives changes its meaning completely. It
applies especially to the centos built up of parts smaller
than a verse. It can be one word or half a verse. What
we get is an artificial composition, which does not show
any resemblance between the figure of Mary and the
characters on the basis of which She is described.
b) A centoist interferes with the source material by intro-
ducing or omitting negation. This technique results in
showing Mary’s behaviour in opposition to the behaviour
of characters appearing in Homer’s, Virgil’s and trage-
dians’ works. This juxtaposition of God’s Mother with
Her mythological antitypes enables authors to show the
unique nature of the figure of Mary.
Summary
223
c) When they deal with positive characters of Greek and
Roman mythology, centoists present God’s Mother as
a figure similar to them, but better than them in many
different respects. It is mainly the quantity aspect, which
distinguishes Mary and accentuates Her uniqueness.
d) Sometimes cento authors copy longer parts of the source
text, thus preventing significant changes in the area of
meaning. Although those parts come from a different
context, it is possible to notice similarities between God’s
Mother and characters of Greek and Roman mythology.
The similarities focus mainly on the emotional sphere.
5. CentosputemphasisontwodogmasaboutMary-Herdivine
Motherhood and Her perpetual Virginity. They are highlighted
in many different ways. Firstly, by the use of terminology itself;
secondly, by showing the divine and human nature of Christ
and remaining silent on the moment of conception of Jesus by
Mary. In highlighting Mary’s divine Motherhood and Virginity
centos resemble the biblical perspective.
6. Although centoists avoid showing God’s Mother in
a negative light, they do not hesitate to use phrases which were
used in a negative context in classical literature. Describing
Mary by means of texts which were used to characterise: the
Phoenician woman - a slave who stole from her owners and
kidnapped their son to sell him into slavery, Medea who killed
her own children, Dido who committed suicide, Phlegyas who
was punished in the underworld for betraying his homeland,
must have evoked negative associations in the readers. However,
for centoists the original context of the verses did not matter,
224
Maiiology of the centos
but the new sense of those phrases, which was the effect of
placing them in a completely new context.
7. Centos are lacking in trinitarian perspective. For that
reason centoists did not manage to depict the richness of
biblical description of Annunciation. Although centoists often
evoke the figure of both God the Father and the Son of God,
they do not present the figure of the Holy Spirit. The absence
of pneumatology is the element which distinguishes biblical
Mariology from Maiiology composed on the basis of myths.
Mythology refers us to understanding conception as a result of
intercourse.
8. Centos are a proof of understanding myths as grains of
truth. However, they accentuate that if the elements of truth
are not linked properly, they do not unveil the full reality. The
connection between those truths ( veritatum) is revealed
by using the key of Christian Revelation. Without this key we
deal with atomisation of grains of truth and we end up having
difficulty with their proper interpretation. Only when biblical
perspective is applied, it is possible to determine which person
is mentioned in the centos. It is connected with the fact that
different onomastics and topography are used in the source
material and in the Bible. For those reasons centoists use
numerous pronouns, whose proper interpretation is possible
only on the basis of the Bible.
The rich nature of Christian centos suggests perspectives for
further research. It would be worthwhile to analyse the authors’
comments included in centos. They constitute valuable proof
of centoists’ awareness of the fact that it is impossible to depict
some of the truths of the Christian message on the basis of

Homer’s epics, classical tragedy or Virgil’s works. The analysis
of the comments would enable us to show the Christian novum.
It would be worthwhile to use the centoists’ method in
contemporary context. Centos are a good way to read litera-
ture from different cultures from Christian perspective, and
in consequence, provide a creative attitude to all literary
forms of culture. Homeric epics, Greek tragedy and Virgil’s
poetry are all works of politheistic character, showing the
world of gods in a negative light. The seemingly unfavourable
content of those works did not prevent centoists from their
Christian interpretation. Therefore, it might be possible to read
contemporary literature using the centoists’ method.
