ABSTRACT
It should be noted from the very outset that this work is the result of the researches
conducted as part of the research project CNCS-UEFISCDI: PN-II-RU-TE-2011-3-0286
(Director: Dr. Mirela Popa-Andrei, Scientific Researcher III,), entitled Mechanisms of
Selecting and Promoting the Transylvanian Elites during the Second Half of the
Nineteenth Century. Case Study - the Greek-Catholic Elite.
One of the chief directions of study in Romanian historiography over the past few
decades has been the one dedicated to the elites, seen as the driving forces of the society
in which they asserted themselves. Reconstructing their history is important because
they were the promoters of new trends and directions in the fields to which they made
outstanding contributions, setting the major guidelines and leading the groups they
were the foremost representatives of, whether these were national, religious, social,
economic, or cultural groups, etc. As a research topic, the elites have been one of the
key challenges of post-1989 Romanian historiography, in its attempts to bridge the
gap that has separated it from similar efforts undertaken in Western historiography
for several decades now.
Within the field of research on the Romanian elites, a new direction has gradu-
ally emerged, dedicated to retracing the life and work of nineteenth-century hierar-
chs in the Greek-Catholic Romanian Church, to outlining various personalities who
achieved prominent ecclesiastical careers or to examining several specific groups of
professionals, such as the canons of Gherla or the professors from Blaj. However, no
analysis to date has focused exclusively on the Romanian Greek-Catholic ecclesiastical
elite of the nineteenth century as a whole, seen as a fundamental component of the
Transylvanian elites from that time. During that period, the ecclesiastical elite main-
tained its pre-eminence amongst the Romanian elite and intelligentsia, even though,
in parallel (mostly from the 1860s onwards), other socio-professional categories also
began asserting themselves ever more firmly on the public and political stage: civil
servants, lawyers, journalists, etc.
In light of the fact that, as stated above, the Greek-Catholic hierarchs have already
served as distinct subjects of investigation and study, as evinced by the thoroughly
researched monographs and biographies written about them, this dictionary brings
to the foreground of historiographical inquiry the second echelon of the ecclesiastical
427
elite. In particular, it focuses on the members of the Greek-Catholic higher clergy from
Transylvania, who were active during the period 1850-1918, more specifically on the
canons of the four Cathedral Chapters (three episcopal chapters: Oradea, Lugoj, Gherla,
and a metropolitan one, in Blaj), the vicars forane of the five vicariates forane in the
Metropolitan Province of Alba-Iulia and Fagara§ (Fagara$, Ha{eg, Nasaud, Silvania, and
Maramure§), and the professors who taught at the two theological seminaries in Blaj
and Gherla.
In order to understand the role of each of the aforementioned elite categories, let
us briefly present them. The chapter canons had an important role in the diocesan
administration, as they seconded and assisted the bishop in his spiritual and temporal
administration of the diocese. Moreover, the Chapter was the institution that ensured
the interim administration of the dioceses during periods of sedis vacantia. In their
turn, the vicars forane exerted a significant authority in the territories placed under
their jurisdiction, being assimilated, at the local level, with the status of „bishops of
the place.” It should also be mentioned that in addition to their important role in the
formation of the diocesan clergy, the professors from the theological institutes repre-
sented an important pool of recruitment for the hierarchs who were promoted to the
ecclesiastical offices of canons or vicars forane; they were members of the metropolitan
or episcopal consistory, having thus a substantial say in the diocesan administration.
It ought to be emphasized here that in Oradea and Lugoj there were no Greek-Catholic
seminaries, the young clergy receiving their training either in the two Romanian
Greek-Catholic seminaries mentioned above, or - especially in the case of Oradea -
in the Catholic theological seminaries from the Austrian and, respectively, after 1867,
the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. In 1912, for instance, the so-called Greek-Catholic
Theological Academy was set up in Oradea, its objective being the theological prepa-
ration of the diocesan clergy; given, however, that it effectively operated only after
World War I, this institution and its professors have not been included in our research.
Instead, we present, in addition to the biographies of the canons of Oradea Mare, four
biographical medallions dedicated to the clerics from Oradea who, during the period
under consideration here, taught religion and the Romanian language and literature
to the Romanian students from the Premonstratensian Gymnasium in Oradea, as well
as elements of religious rite and chant to the young diocesan clerics studying theology
at the Latin Seminary in Oradea (namely Vasile Iujiu, Iustin Popfiu, loan Ciceronescu,
and Iuliu Papfalvy, two of them having completed their studies in Rome).
Equally important to note is the fact that insofar as the group examined here is con-
cerned, it was especially from among the canons and vicars forane that the bishops of
the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church were recruited, as they represented the main pool
of clerics for selection and promotion to the highest ecclesiastical offices. Thus, although
our research has focused on the second (the canons and the vicars forane) and tertiary
(the professors) echelons of the Romanian Greek-Catholic ecclesiastical elite, it indirectly
reflects upon the highest elite of the Romanian Church United with Rome.
428
The integration and degree of involvement of this ecclesiastical segment in the soci-
ety in which it lived represent aspects that deserve being emphasized, all the more so
since similar studies conducted in Western historiography indicate the fact that the
impact of these elites on their communities was relatively small. Thus, Olivier Charles,
the author of a thesis dedicated to the canons of the Cathedral Chapters in Brittany
during the Enlightenment, contends that most of them went unnoticed in history,
limiting themselves to fulfilling the obligations pertaining to their office, but without
leaving a significant mark upon their contemporary society or distinguishing themsel-
ves through promotions to important ecclesiastical offices. From the start, we can say
that this was not the case of the canons, vicars and professors studied, since they were
active in various fields and, to their vast majority, highly involved in the events of the
periods in which they lived.
The most important of these elite categories was, of course, that of the chapter
canons. Each of the canons had well defined responsibilities. The provost was the pre-
sident of the Chapter, which he represented in any situation, conducting, on behalf
of the institution, the correspondence with the bishop and the consistory, signing all
the official documents issued on behalf of the Chapter; he was also the President of
the Matrimonial Court etc. The canon-cantor was the one who was responsible for
administering the divine service in the cathedral church. The canon-custodian had
in his care the „cleanliness and beauty of the Lord’s house,” his main duty being to
oversee the state of the buildings and all the church vestments and objects. The duty
of the canon-chancellor was to preserve the protocols of the consistorial meetings in
the Chapter archive, together with all the other documents issued by the Cathedral
Chapter. The canon-theologian was entrusted with overseeing the education of the
young clerics and the state of affairs in the confessional schools of the diocese. The
chancellor was responsible for the smooth operation of the diocesan chancery, where
the correspondence was written, the episcopal or consistorial decrees and the regu-
lations were copied, etc. At the same time, while some of the canons were responsi-
ble for managing the diocesan funds and foundations, others were members of the
Matrimonial Court or of the Episcopal Collectorate, or were pro-synodal examiners,
being entitled but also bound to verify the vocation of aspirants to the priesthood, etc.
One of their major competencies, which was also an obligation, was to attend all the
consistorial meetings chaired by the bishop or, in his absence, by the episcopal vicar.
It should be noted that in 1868, the Chapter - be it metropolitan or diocesan - gene-
rally featured a similar structure and comparable competencies, as Falcinelli, the nun-
cio at Vienna, noticed during his visit to Transylvania. The only difference he could
discern between them was numerical: the metropolitan chapter consisted of 10 mem-
bers, while at the diocesan level, the same institution comprised 6 members. On this
occasion, Nuncio Falcinelli noted that the best organized and, therefore, the most func-
tional was the Chapter of Oradea, which had been in operation for the longest period
of time. Also, the overwhelming majority of the canons of Oradea had been trained at
429
prestigious universities from Vienna and Rome, being characterized by genuine devo-
tion to the Pontifical See and the Catholic Church; in fact, it was from the Chapter of
Oradea that many of the bishops were selected, during the period under survey no
less than five bishops and a metropolitan ofihe Romanian Church United with Rome
coming from here. In the other dioceses, the process of forming well-trained eccle-
siastical staff was in full swing; under scholarship programs, more and more young
Romanian Greek-Catholic theologians attended the courses of European universities
and returned to Transylvania to be integrated into the gremial clergy, at the head of
which were the canons of the Cathedral Chapters.
With a view to compiling a most balanced and uniform presentation of these ecclesi-
astical figures, the drafting of the biographical medallions has complied with a unitary
structure, which has aimed to reconstitute the following aspects: the biographical data
of these high clerics, information about the studies they completed, their ecclesiasti-
cal and didactic career, the activity they carried out both on an ecclesiastical and on
a cultural-political level, the distinctions awarded to them. An important aspect that
held the authors’ attention concerned the identification and highlighting of the cri-
teria commonly used by the church and the political authorities in the recruitment
and promotion of the clergy within the ecclesiastical hierarchy. In addition to this,
we have also sought to offer an informative, selective outline of the works written by
our subjects, where appropriate. At the end of each micro-biography, we review in an
abbreviated form the sources we have used, their listing and presentation in full being
included in a separate chapter, which gathers together all the bibliographical referen-
ces we have resorted to in compiling the Dictionary.
One of the first issues examined in this study focuses on two of the biographical data
offered by individual record of each of the subjects investigated: their social origin and
marital status. The former enables us to integrate the character analysed in a possible
line of professional filiation, in case his paternal parent was a priest, helping us to
determine to what extent dynasties of priests had become a reality in the Romanian
Greek-Catholic Church in the second half of the nineteenth century. Regarding marital
status, the basic premise of this research was the attempt to establish a correlation
between celibacy and advancement in the hierarchy of the Romanian Greek-Catholic
Church. Celibacy was the key factor in the selection and promotion of the clergy to
the higher ranks, representing the second essential criterion for ecclesiastical advan-
cement, after that of professional training. As regards their social background, in
Oradea and Gherla was registered the largest number of canons of noble birth; they
came mostly from northern Transylvania, from among the ranks of the Romanian
nobility, whose ancestors had been ennobled for military service rendered to the
Transylvanian princes during the Middle Ages. Even though most of these families of
petty nobles did not differ at all, in terms of their wealth and daily living, from the
families of well-off farmers, their great merit was that by virtue of their social status,
they could provide their children with a different educational background, ensuring
430
their access to education and facilitating their attendance of higher schools or their
obtaining studentships.
Another aspect highlighted in our analysis is that towards the end of the nineteenth
century, the number of canons of priestly descent increased in all the dioceses, attes-
ting the fact that hereditary priesthood functioned efficiently and that the strategy of
socio-professional assertion through the second or the third generation was extremely
practical. We shall limit ourselves to mentioning here the Hossu family, which, in the
nineteenth century, comprised a considerable number of priests and archpriests, and
which succeeded, through its second- and third-generation descendants, in the twen-
tieth century, to remain entrenched in the history of the Romanian Greek-Catholic
Church with a metropolitan canon (Iosif Hossu) and two bishops (Vasile Hossu and
Iuliu Hossu).
Regarding the status of the canons, it can be said that the celibate priests had pri-
ority in being appointed to ecclesiastical dignities in all the Romanian Greek-Catholic
dioceses. Of course, representatives of the married clergy were also promoted to the
Chapter, but in lower percentages compared to the number of celibate canons; still,
they were present in all the chapters, without exception, even in the most „Latinist”
diocese: that of Oradea. For reasons of clarity, let us mention that in the Diocese of
Oradea, 8 out of the 28 canons analysed were married; in the Diocese of Lugoj, out
of a total of 23 canons, 6 were married; and in the Diocese of Gherla, out of a total of
20 canons, 8 were married. The difference was again provided by the Archdiocese of
Alba-Iulia: from 1853 on, it had a special number of canonical stalls reserved for the
married clergy. It is to the three stalls of royal foundation (representing one third of
the canons in the Metropolitan Chapter) that the most commendable representatives
of the married Romanian Greek-Catholic clergymen in the Archdiocese of Alba-Iulia
and Fagara§ could be promoted on a constant basis.
One of the basic criteria used in the recruitment and promotion of the higher clergy
in the Romanian Church United with Rome was undeniably that of the candidates’
intellectual and professional training. The elite nature of this social category (the
higher clergy) was primarily a result of the educational and professional path these
clerics had embarked on. The intellectual and theological formation of the future
canons evinces a classical trajectory adopted by all the personalities examined here:
primary, middle and gymnasial studies, followed by theological studies in specialized
seminaries, most of the canons completing their education at university level. Those
with higher chances of promotion in the ecclesiastical hierarchy were the young cle-
rics who had graduated from the institutes in Rome, Vienna and Pest (Budapest after
1871), and those who had completed their studies in Blaj, Ungvar, Trnava, Oradea
Mare, etc. Promotion chances increased if the candidates also had a doctorate in
theology and/or philosophy. For the young clerics, higher instruction represented a
springboard to a promising ecclesiastical career, the first step residing in their gaining
access into the system of confessional education or to various offices of the episcopacy
431
and the Episcopal Consistory. In general, the recruitment of the future canons was
made from among the church officials serving in the episcopal polity, from among the
professors or, sometimes, the vicars forane and the district archpriests.
The process of promoting clerics to the position of canons was gradually accom-
plished throughout the entire Greek-Catholic ecclesiastical province of Alba-Iulia
and Fagara§. Promotion could occur only under certain circumstances: in general,
following the demise of one of the canons in office or following the promotion of one
of them to the office of bishop, a situation that was more commonly encountered in
Oradea Mare during the time span under scrutiny here. The occupation of canonical
stalls always followed an upward trajectory. Thus, if one of the stalls was vacated as a
result of one of the aforementioned situations, all the other canons climbed a rung or
more in the hierarchy of the Cathedral Chapter, other canons being appointed to the
vacant stalls.
A distinct segment of the higher ecclesiastical elite in the Romanian Greek-Catholic
Church was that of the vicars forane. In the ecclesiastical province of Alba-Iulia and
Fagara§, there were five vicariates forane, three of these having been established in
1786: Fagara§, Hafeg, Nasaud; the vicariate forane of Silvania was founded in 1809,
while that of Marma|ia came into being in I860. The institution of the vicariate forane
was implemented in the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church by Bishop loan Bob. A vicar
forane held the role of a deputy for the bishop in a district that was located at a signi-
ficant distance from the episcopal residence; he was the „bishop’s representative out-
side the city” in which the latter resided. Vast distances, population numbers, other
necessities, such as the fact that the bishop could not travel to all the places where his
presence was demanded represented the grounds for his dispatching a sort of minis-
ters, the so-called rural vicars or vicars forane, to generally more remote places and, in
particular, to the rural areas of his diocese. These vicars were known as forane because
they exercised their jurisdictionforis etextra civitatis.
The reason for the introduction of this institution in the Romanian Greek-Catholic
Church from Transylvania during the time of Bishop Bob was, above all, the defence
of Catholicism, but also the expansion thereof beyond the boundaries of the Austrian
Empire. During the period studied (1853-1918), there operated 27 vicars in the five
vicariates forane (6 in Nasaud, 7 in Fagara§, 4 in Maramure§, 2 in Silvania and 8 in
Hafeg). As in the case of the canons, the main criterion in promoting a cleric to the
dignity of vicar forane was his professional and intellectual background, his exemplary
moral and political conduct, and his administrative skills. As regards the training and
instruction the vicars forane benefited from, it should be noted that 14 of them were
graduates of the Theological Seminary in Blaj, 2 were graduates of the seminary in
Gherla, 2 had attended theological university studies at Ungvar, 2 in Pest, 6 others in
Vienna and only 1 in Rome (Iacob Radu). Of the 27 vicars forane, 14 advanced in the
ecclesiastical hierarchy, being promoted to the ranks of chapter canons; 2 of these later
became bishops (Mihail Pavel, Valeriu Traian Fren|iu) and 3 advanced to the dignity of
432
chapter provost (Macedon Pop, §tefan Moldovan and Iacob Radu). Regarding marital
status, it may be ascertained that 8 of them were married, while the remaining 19 were
ordained as celibate priests. Insofar as the social origin of the vicars forane is concer-
ned, it should be noted that most of them (i.e. 11 out of 27) had a relatively modest
social origin, coming from peasant families, only 3 of them being of noble descent and
the rest deriving from the families of village notables (notaries, cantors or primary
teachers) or from priestly families.
In analysing the activity of the second echelon of the clergy from the Metropolitan
Province of Alba-Iulia and Fagara§, an important emphasis was laid on their activity
in the ecclesiastical sphere. The higher clergy were extremely closely involved in the
process of institutional organization which was launched in 1853, with the elevation
of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church to the rank of a Metropolitan See, as well as
in the process of defining and defending the identity of the Greek-Catholic Romanians
and staving off the project of Hungarian Catholic autonomy. However, ecclesiastical
activity was not the only domain in which the three elite categories examined here
manifested themselves. A significant number of the canons, the vicars forane and the
professors distinguished themselves through their activity in the field of education, of
culture, in general, and of politics. Not only did many of the personalities evoked in this
work hold important ecclesiastical offices or serve as renowned professors, but they
were also authors of textbooks of tremendous importance in the Romanian school
system of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In addition to this, they wrote works
of reference in various fields, such as history, linguistics, pedagogy, mathematics, geo-
graphy, agriculture, botany, dictionaries and compendiums, as they were not limited
to the condition of men of the church. They all represented the cultural - and, for a
while, even the political - vanguard of the Romanian society, being a substitute for the
secular intelligentsia, to whose formation they contributed decisively in their capacity
as professors.
Moreover, they were members of various cultural societies or associations, like the
reading societies or the Society for the Romanian Theatre Fund, and, above all, they were
active members of Astra, the most important cultural association of the Romanians in
Transylvania. Another undeniable merit of the second tier of the Greek-Catholic eccle-
siastical elite was that of having bequeathed the vast majority of their goocis and assets
to the church. Furthermore, a significant number of the chapter canons, but also some
of the vicars forane used part of their wealth to establish scholarship foundations in
order to assist the meritorious young Greek-Catholic Romanians who studied in the
country or abroad.
This dictionary also includes a total of 18 professors who taught at the Theological
Seminaries of Gherla and Blaj during the period under study. These were professors
who were not promoted among the ranks of canons or vicars forane. Most of them
started teaching in other types of schools (the so-called preparandia or pedago-
gical institute, or the gymnasium), which may be explained through the limited
433
J
number of teaching positions and the longevai character of some professional care-
ers, and they carried out in parallel other, non-didactic activities, accepting offices
in the church administration. In the period in which they served as professors at
the theological seminaries, 44% of the analysed personalities also held positions in
the church administration; these positions implied a sequential advancement from
assessors in the (diocesan and archdiocesan) Consistory, to members in various
specialized committees (the Matrimonial Court, the Collectorate, etc.). For the per-
sonalities examined here, the teaching career was an important step in their profes-
sional evolution. While 27% of the subjects of our study chose to put on the priestly
garments and relinquish the role of a teacher, another 16 % chose to continue their
teaching activity outside the cultural centres in which they had become consecrated,
especially due to the interference of the authorities, which were disgruntled by the
professors’ involvement in the national movement. Thus, those who left Blaj and
taught in similar institutions outside Blaj and even Transylvania included professors
such as Demetriu Farago in Focçani, §tefan Pop in Bucharest or Alexandru Ciura in
Cluj. The seminary professors were often appreciated also in light of their cultural
dissemination activities, both within the framework of the educational system and,
especially, outside it. One of the methods of ensuring this dissemination of cultural
messages and actions was the journalistic activity. Over 40% of the professors studied
here contributed, either individually or in groups, to founding prestigious religious,
literary, political or economic journals, standing out as a genuine „opinion formers”
of their day and age.
The category of the professors from the Theological Seminaries of Blaj and Gherla
completes the picture of the Greek-Catholic ecclesiastical elite in Transylvania from the
second half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the next century. Their
intellectual background, acquired through education, matched the profile of priests
in modern Romanian society, and their professional activity ensured their privileged
social position in the school and church structures. The reconstruction of the pri-
est-professors’ educational and professional path has enabled us to identify the criteria
that defined them as an elite category. The first indicator resided in the studies they
completed, namely the study programs offered by the higher theological institutions in
the country (the Theological Academy in Blaj and the Theological Seminary in Gherla)
and, especially, those abroad (the Collegio Urbano of Propaganda Fide in Rome, and
the Universities of Budapest and Vienna). The fact that the professors examined in this
study obtained doctorates in theology reinforces the notion of their elitist formation.
Another criterion our research is based on focuses on the teaching career and the expe-
rience they acquired in the educational institutions in which they were active. These
professors successively held various teaching positions in the Theological Seminaries,
contributing directly to the personal and professional formation of several generations
of priests. Their twofold status as professors and priests demanded compliance with
both scientific and moral requirements, which guided the students’ conduct within
434
and, especially, outside school. Their obtaining additional qualifications or specializa-
tions and their passion for culture shaped a distinct aspect in the didactic activity of the
professors portrayed in this study.
The sources underlying the present research are extremely varied, mainly gathering
data from the Schematisms of the four dioceses explored here, published in the period
we have focused our attention on. In this regard, we have consulted 10 such schema-
tisms belonging to the Archdiocese of Alba-Iulia and Fagaras, 11 schematisms from the
Diocese of Oradea, 13 schematisms from the Diocese of Gherla and 1 from the Diocese
of Lugoj. The most complex schematisms are the jubilee ones from the year 1900 for
the Archdiocese of Alba-Iulia and Fagara§ and Oradea and, respectively, the 1903 one
for Gherla and Lugoj. The biographical data and the evidence these schematisms
contain about the structure of ecclesiastical administration at a diocesan level have
allowed us to gather fundamental information about the personnel policy adopted by
the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church.
In addition, we have also examined information from the press of the time, mainly
the cameo portraits published on the appointment of a canon or the panegyrics written
on their deaths, the latter being, in certain cases, genuine curricula vitae compiled
at the end of these lives, which were entirely devoted to the church. An equally impor-
tant source derives from the archival material, mainly represented by the protocols of
the chapter meetings, preserved in various county branches of the national archives,
while the Vatican Archives have offered us access to just as valuable sources, such as
the Chapter Constitutions, which regulated the functioning and the competencies of
the four Romanian Greek-Catholic dioceses, as well as other types of documents, like
the so-called lettere di stato. All these have been complemented by a rich specialized
literature, which supports and reinforces our interpretive approach.
In terms of the methodology adopted, we have attempted to combine the methods
that are characteristic of historical research with those of a sociological nature; thus,
besides a positivist type of reconstruction, essential in certain situations where basic
information about various personalities or historical moments is missing, we have
resorted to a prosopographic analysis, trying to reconstruct the key moments in the
formation and affirmation of the canons in the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church. To
these is added comparative analysis, which has enabled us to theoretically frame the
formation of this ecclesiastical elite from an intellectual and professional perspective,
seen as a prerequisite for its promotion and social ascent.
This book is compiled in the form of a dictionary that brings to the fore the 140
micro-biographies of representative Greek-Catholic ecclesiastical personalities at the
level of the entire Romanian society from the period 1853-1918, as follows: 34 metro-
politan canons, 28 canons of Oradea, 23 canons of Lugoj, 20 canons of Gherla, 18
professors (from Blaj and Gherla), 13 vicars forane (actually 27, but 14 of them were
promoted to the Chapter and are included among the canons), and 4 professors from
Oradea. Of course, it should be noted that the number of professors and vicars forane
435
was higher, as also specified in the introduction, but in this list we have only included
those professors and vicars who were not promoted among the canons.
We have opted for an alphabetical presentation of the 140 Greek-Catholic ecclesias-
tical personalities who were active in the diocesan administration or in the process of
school instruction within the specified timeframe. Of course, we do not claim to have
comprehensively identified and presented the entire category of higher Greek-Catholic
clergy within the said time segment. It is very possible that important ecclesiastical
figures have not been included in this Dictionary. We do, however, believe that we have
exhaustively presented the members of the three sub-categories: canons, professors in
the theological seminaries and vicars forane.
The chronological limits have not been chosen at random. We established the year
1853 as the starting point of our investigation, since this year represents an important
benchmark in the history of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church from Transylvania
and in its institutional organization, given the creation of the autonomous ecclesias-
tical province of Alba-Iulia and Fagara$ and the establishment of two new dioceses: of
Lugoj and Gherla. As regards the upper limit in time, theoretically we could have stop-
ped at the year 1900, as shown in the wording of the title of the research project men-
tioned above. Still, we have considered 1918 as a more relevant year for the purposes of
our research, since this year conventionally marks the end of the modern Romanian
period and is also coeval with a new beginning, a new era for Transylvania, integrated
within the Romanian national state, as well as for all the Transylvanian institutions,
including the ecclesiastical ones.
The desire of the authors of this Dictionary is that it may become a useful tool for
researchers and, at the same time, that it may offer an interesting and enjoyable rea-
ding experience for the general public interested in such a topic. Moreover, this work
aims to offer a different interpretation of the more or less well-known data it presents
regarding the Greek-Catholic ecclesiastical elite within the above-mentioned time-
frame. The special emphasis in this work is on the system adopted for the recruitment
and promotion of the ecclesiastical staff at all the institutional tiers of the Romanian
Greek-Catholic Church during that period.
