One of the biggest archaeological complexes is located in the area east of Lake
Chudskoye. This can be found in the vicinity of Zalahtovye village in the Gdov
district of the Pskov Region on the eastern shore of Lake Chudskoye in Lahta
Bay The archaeological complex includes a settlement site of the Neolithic and
Paleometal period. It also includes a settlement site dating back to the period
from the second half of the first millennium A.D. until the 14th century. This
site includes five groups of barrows and one barrow located separately dating
back to the second half of the first millennium A.D. There are also three flat
ground cemeteries dating back to the 12th through 17th century.
The central place in the complex is occupied by a group of barrows 1
being the biggest cemetery in the eastern shore of Lake Chudskoye, which in-
cludes over 250 mounds dating back to the second half of the first millennium
A.D. - the 12th century. Excavations of the archaeological complexes (which
have been carried out for over a 100 years) allowed us to reconstruct the history
of the development by man in the territory east of Lake Chudskoye from the
earliest time to Late Middle Ages. The materials of Zalachtovye cemetery reveal
complicated ethno-cultural processes connected to the formation and develop-
ment of the Old Rus population. The specific features of the monuments are the
burials of Ancient Aests who came to the shore of Teploe bay from the western
bank of Lake Chudskoye in the early 11th century. The Baltic-Finnish people
preserved their unique culture for two centuries. But under the influence of the
Old Rus population they were gradually assimilated and started to bury their
dead in accordance with the Christian tradition.
