The brochure «The ancient objects dating back to the Early Iron Age
in Pskov vicinities: imported items and imitations» is dedicated to the
study of archaeological finds in the territory of the present day Pskov
Region.
This topic has been given little attention since there were very
few of such objects found until recent time and their attribution
did not include comparison to objects discovered outside the
Pskov Region. This work is the first attempt to classify this type of
artifacts.
Objects known earlier had been discovered during archaeological
excavations in Pskov Kremlin, in several ancient hill forts and
settlements in the south of the Pskov Region. There were also some
incidental findings made in the territory of Pskov and the Pskov
Region at different times. Among those ‘old” findings of special
interest are: a long Scythian sward dating back to the second half of
the 4th century B.C., probably originating from the upper reaches
of the Velikaya River, and a stone Celtic idol dating back to the 4th
- 2nd centuries B.C., originating from the former Bogovo village in
the north of Pushkinskiye Gori district. To the same time period
belongs a fragment of a cup made of white metal, close in style to
cups originating from Megara and dating back to the 2nd century B.C.
found in Mali village, located not far from Izborsk.
There is information about a coin hoard of 10 Roman coins dating
back to the 2nd-3rd centuries A.D., found in 1928 on a promontory
between the confluence of the Sorof River and the Velikaya River. There
exist photos of 11 more coins dating back to the 3rd-4th centuries, found
at different times in Pskov and in the Pskov Region and a Roman weight
for balance dating back to the same time period, which was discovered
in Pskov.

Four single-sided antler combs originate from the 3rd - 4th century
layer in Pskov Krom (the site of the ancient settlement). One more 4th-
5th century one-sided thin copper comb with one side shaped as two
horse-heads was found in Opochetskiy district. Two bracelets with
knob-shaped endings originate from a burial ground in Vibouty, they
date back to the lst-2nd centuries A.D. A bracelet of convex-concave
section which dates back to the 1st - 2nd centuries A.D. was found in
the vicinities of Pskov. Two more silver wire bracelets with flattened
ends dating back to the 4th-5th centuries were discovered during
archaeological excavations of a long barrow near Volodi village. A strap
end dating back to the 2nd/3rd - 5th/6th centuries A.D, was also found
in a long barrow near Volodi village. Two plaques from strap ending
were found in Pskov - one of them is a disc-shaped plaque dating back
to late 2nd - early 3rd century, the other one is a plaque in «Skvira» style
from the 3rd - 4th cc. layers. An ivory rounded pyxis dating back from
before the turn of the 4th-5th cc. originates from Pskov
A hoard found near Sutoka village which dates back to the 3rd-5th
centuries A.D. included a pseudo-twisted neck ring with spoon-shaped
endings, a lunula-shaped pendant, an oval pendant with a cross, a
bracelet with widened ends, two biconical beads.
The following objects were discovered in the south and the north of
the Pskov Region: eight razors dating back to the 3rd - the middle of the
5th century A.D.; two iron axes of Central European types dating back
to the 3rd-4th centuries A.D., found in Mikhailovskoye and Gorodok
ancient settlement sites; a votive stone axe from Kamno village, dating
back to late Roman Iron Age - early Migration Period. Apparently a
three-bladed arrowhead dating back to the Post-Hunnic period and a
rhomb-shaped arrowhead dating back to the 5th-7th centuries A.D.
originate from Pskov A spur dating back to the 3rd-4th centuries A.D.
was found in Gorka settlement in Pliussa.
There are early fibulae known to us, discovered in the site of Pskov
ancient settlement: a penannular brooch with massive endings, dating

back to the 2nd - early 3rd cc., and a fibula with a widened foot part,
dating back to the 5th - 6th cc. A fibula with a triangular foot part dating
back to late 4th - the first half of the 5th cc. A.D. originates from a burial
ground in Pskov; an imitation of a Late Roman period fibula dating back
to the 3rd-5th cc. A.D. was found during archaeological excavations in
Pskov. A shield of a fibula dating back to the 4th-6th centuries A.D. and
a rhomb-shaped shield of a fibula decorated with chip carving dating
back to around the 2nd half of the 5th century A.D. were also found in
Pskov. A fibula dating back to the middle of the 5th - early 7th century
A.D. originates from Liubotezh ancient settlement site. A cross-ribbed
fibula, which dates back to the 3rd -4th centuries A.D. was found in the
vicinities of Piskovichi village, located not far from Pskov. A fragment of
a curved eye-fibula was discovered in the vicinities of Pskov. It has been
preliminarily dated as belonging to the 2nd century A.D.
An amphora-like plaque to a Roman military belt dating back to
the second half of the 4th century A.D. was discovered in Pskov; two
similar, but smaller in size plaques were found in the vicinities of Pskov.
An amphora-like plaque with enameled decoration and an inscription
in Latin RIHBO was also found in Pskov vicinities.
A fragment of a plaque with three face masks dating back to the 4th-
5th century A.D., as well as a plaque in Villa Fontana Style dating back
to the middle of the 4th - the 2nd half of the 5th century A.D. originate
from stray finds in Pskov.
Half of a plaque with enameled decoration and a three-horned
ending, dating back to the 3rd-4th cc. A.D. was also found in the
vicinities of Pskov.
Three narrow trapezium-shaped plaques, which have analogues
among objects discovered near the Kama River and dating back to the
1st -2nd cc. A.D. were found in Mikhailovskoye ancient settlement site
and in Gorki settlement.
A plaque and a pendant with “pearl” ornamentation, dating back to the
3rd-5th cc. A.D. also belong to the Eastern-Finnish type of ancient objects.

A bucket-shaped pendant, dating back to the 3rd-the middle of the
4th cc. A.D. was discovered in Pskov A lunula-shaped pendant, dating
back to the 3rd-4th cc. A.D. originates from Pskov Krom. A cross
pendant with enameled ornamentation was discovered in the hill fort
nearby Gorodok village by the Lovat5 River. An S-shaped pendant, also
with enameled ornamentation, dating back to the 3rd-5th cc. A.D. - was
found in Pskov vicinities.
Early buckles were found. A B-shaped buckle, dating back to the
end of the 5th century - the beginning of the 7th century A.D. was
discovered near Eremeyevo village. A B-shaped buckle, dating back to
the end of the 4th - the beginning of the 6th century A.D. and a round
buckle, dating back to the second half of the 5th - the first quarter of
the 6th century A.D. originate from Polibino village. Buckles with long
endings for the strap, dating back to the 5th - early 6th cc. A.D. were
found in Lezgi, Gorodnya and Soviy Bor villages.
Tweezers with widening ends, dating back to the middle of the 1st
century A.D. originate from Zhabino village, Kamno ancient settlement
site and Pskov and two more were found in the vicinities of Pskov.
A bust-shaped fastener for a pot handle dating back to the 2nd c.
A.D. originates from Pskov.
A mould for casting the ending of a headband of Sutoki-Sandrausishke
type dating back to the 2nd half of the 2nd century - late 4th century
A.D. was found in Pskov Krom.
A bronze handle of a Roman surgical instrument, dating back to the
3rd-4th cc. A.D. was discovered in the vicinities of Pskov, as well as a
cross-ornamented strap divider for three straps from a Roman horse
harness. A plaque for such a strap divider originates from Pskov. Both
the strap divider and the plaque date back to the 3rd-4th cc. A.D. Four
propellers” -* plaques for horse harness dating back to the 4th c. A.D.
also originate from the vicinities of Pskov. Three buckles with figured
edges, dating back to the 4th-5th cc. A.D. can also be considered as
having once been part of a Roman horse harness.

The above mentioned archaeological finds from Pskov, its vicinities
and the Pskov Region prove that despite its remoteness from the Black
Sea and the Danube River, Pskov territories were involved in the events
of the Post Roman time and the Migration Period.
