adam_text | Summary
National identify and identification. Czech Republic Visegrad group Euro-
pean Union (Ndrodni identity a identifikace. Ceska republika - Visegradska
ctyfka - Evropska unie) presents descriptions, analyses, and interpretations
of social identities, territorial identities, and national identity in the Czech
Republic in comparative perspective. Results of the analyses presented in
chapters are based not only on unique Czech data collected by the Insti-
tute of Sociology CAS and Institute of Psychology CAS, but mainly on the
analyses of the international data sets from the International Social Survey
Programme (ISSP), European Values Study (EVS), European Social Survey
(ESS), and the Eurobarometer.
Social identity theory compares how behaviour and identity vary based
on people s fluid concepts of themselves as either individuals or as members
of groups. It posits that people inherently create and identify with groups,
and will promote their groups to the detriment of others. Czechs, first of all,
derive their social identity from their economic activity - from their occupa-
tion, unemployment, or housewife status. The second most important iden-
tity is the marital or family status. Its importance rises when a person takes
care of the children. Other social identities - age, gender, class, regional, na-
tional, and racial - are less important for Czechs.
Concerning regional identity, Czechs identify with their village/town, re-
gion, country, and European Union less than residents of other Visegrad
countries - Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. Generally, residents of all Viseg-
rad countries identify most with their states and villages/towns, while re-
gions and the European Union are less important spheres of identification
for them. Analysis shows that the European Union means mainly demo-
cratic values and a common currency (euro) for residents of member coun-
tries. But the EU has a different image in each country, people identify with
it differently and they wish for different level of integration. These images,
degrees of identification, and integration preferences reflect diverse psycho-
logical and pragmatic reasons of joining the EU across the states. For in-
stance, the EU enlargement towards the Central European countries was ac-
172
companied by the slogan return to Europe, as if these countries were not
part of the Europe before date of the accession. Analysis shows that residents
of Central European countries understand the European Union as a common
geographical space where people share the same history, democratic values,
and symbols (flag and anthem) more than founding countries.
Multinational states and their internal layouts do not always corre-
spond to views of cohabiting nations. A clear example of such a state was
the Czechoslovak federation. Analysis of the data from public opinion sur-
veys collected in 1992 illustrate how Czechs and Slovaks differed in their
opinions on common state and constitutional preferences. Data collected 20
years after the division of Czechoslovakia show that although in 1992 the
majority of Czechs and Slovaks was against the division, they are happy with
it today. Breakup of the federation became a mere historical event that hap-
pened years ago, while geographical proximity, language resemblance and
personal contacts remain.
When we ask the inhabitants of the Czech Republic what is important for
being a true Czech, the most frequently mentioned criteria are speaking the
Czech language, having Czech citizenship and feeling like Czech. For more
than 80% of them, it is also important to be born in the Czech Republic, to re-
spect Czech political institutions and laws of the Czech Republic, and to have
lived in the Czech Republic for the most of one s life. Czech national identity
seems to be invariant for two decades but opening of the Czech society after
1989 leads to diversification of the national identity among social groups as
well. Men, young people, people living in bigger cities and people whose par-
ents (especially the father) were not bom in the Czech country tend to per-
ceive Czech identity differently than women, older people, people living in
small settlements and people whose parents were bom in the territory of the
Czech Republic. It is also worth mentioning that the most important criteria
of the Czech identity are typical for the civic concept of national identity - lan-
guage, citizenship, feeling to be Czech, birth in the Czech Republic, and the
respect for institutions and laws. These criteria are important for integration
of immigrants living here and for their children bom in the Czech Republic.
Are immigrants welcomed in the Czech Republic and Visegrad countries?
Citizens attitudes towards immigrants across V4 countries vary. The rela-
tionship between the proportion of immigrants and attitudes towards them
is not linear. The most tolerant Poles and Slovaks have officially the lowest
proportion of immigrants from all V4 countries. In contrast, the least toler-
ant Hungarians have officially significantly higher proportion of migrants
than the Poles. Czechs, with the highest proportion of immigrants, are in the
middle of the attitude scale.
173
Some countries are famous for the strong national pride expressed
by their citizens — United States of America, Australia, Canada, New
Zealand, Chile, Israel, Ireland, Norway, Malta, Cyprus, Portugal and
Slovenia. By contrast, citizens of other countries — Taiwan, Lithuania,
Ukraine, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Czech Republic —
are known for expressing less national pride. Weaker national pride
is the effect of life dissatisfaction, social distrust, low confidence in
government, dissatisfaction with the development of democracy, and
low level of civic nationalism. Czechs are proud of historical achieve-
ments, as well as attainments in sports, arts and literature or scientific
and technological achievements. Sources of national pride which ap-
peared noticeably weaker in the Czech Republic include the way de-
mocracy works, the country’s economic achievements, the country’s
armed forces, political influence in the world, social security system,
and the treatment of all social groups. Research also supported the ex-
istence of a negative Czech national stereotype. Czechs appreciate the
Czech nation as educated and cultural, but they ascribe negative char-
acteristics to individual Czechs. Their relationship towards their own
nation is less warm than in case of Slovaks.
