The central claim of this book is that the linguistically encoded meaning of an utterance underdetermines the propositions explicitly communicated by the utterance. The arguments and analyses are developed within the relevance-theoretic framework of Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson, so the approach is resolutely cognitive, focussing on the representational levels and mental processes involved in utterance interpretation. The arguments and analyses are developed within the relevance-theoretic framework of Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson, so the approach is resolutely cognitive, focussing on the representational levels and mental processes involved in utterance interpretation. However, extensive comparison is made throughout with other pragmatic frameworks, including those of Paul Grice, Francois Recanati and Kent Bach, which are more philosophically based, and that of Stephen Levinson, which has a more linguistic and computational orientation. Finally, this volume assesses and attempts to reconcile the different perspectives of theories of human semantic competence and accounts of the pragmatic processes involved in communication and interpretation Electronic resource Pragmatique Sémantique Communication / Philosophie LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES / Linguistics / Sociolinguistics bisacsh Communication / Philosophy fast Pragmatics fast Semantics fast Verbale communicatie gtt Semantiek gtt Pragmatiek gtt Linguistik Philosophie Semantik Pragmatics Semantics Communication / Philosophy Semantik (DE-588)4054490-4 gnd rswk-swf Sprache (DE-588)4056449-6 gnd rswk-swf Kommunikation (DE-588)4031883-7 gnd rswk-swf Implizites Wissen (DE-588)4161419-7 gnd rswk-swf Pragmatik (DE-588)4076315-8 gnd rswk-swf Kommunikation (DE-588)4031883-7 s Sprache (DE-588)4056449-6 s Implizites Wissen (DE-588)4161419-7 s 1\p DE-604 Semantik (DE-588)4054490-4 s Pragmatik (DE-588)4076315-8 s 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 0-631-17891-0 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-631-17891-0 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 0-631-21488-7 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-631-21488-5 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/book/10.1002/9780470754603 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
