SUMMARY
The primary goal of my research was to describe a life path of Ferhad-pasa Sokolovic, the first beylerbey of the Bosnian eyalet, one of the persons who marked the history of the Ottoman - Habsburg and Ottoman - Venetian borderlands in the Early Modern era, based on official Ottoman sources. The information about the early phase of his life are very scarce, and in some cases even his identity is questionable becouse, in principle, these kind of sources not provide many information about the private sphere of life of Ottoman officials. A partial explanation of this phenomenon is the fact that Ottoman officials were often transferred from one position to another, and thus it is easy to lose track of them. In spite of all the troubles, in the end it was possible to reconstruct his career in a reliable and precise way, and to point out the specificities that marked his lifit was on the basis of the information from Ottoman and some other sources.
It is assumed that Ferhad Sokolovic was born between the third and the fourth decade of the 16th century in famous Bosnian Sokolovic family. He lived and acted in the 16th century, in the period after the death of Suleyman the Lawgiver, when the Ottoman Empire was practically ruled by a grand vizier of Bosnian origins, Ferhad-pasa’s uncle Grand Vizier Mehmed-pasa Sokolovic (1565-1579), who always supported him and was his great protector. In the historigraphy of the Balkan peoples so far the largest amount of energy was invested into proving the origins of the grand vizier Mehmed-pasa and the other members of this family. Less space was given to the research of the practical mechanisms that kept Sokolovic family at the very peak of both regional politics and the Ottoman Empire itself for the large part of the 16th century, unlike other elite families of Bosnian origins which were marginalized in time.
273
274 ZIVOTNI PUT PRVOG BEGLERBEGA BOSNE: FERHAD-PASA SOKOLOVIC (1530. 1590.)
Sokolovic family stands out both by its number and its activities among many other families and individuals of Bosnian origins. In the time when the Ottoman Empire was at its peak, the members of the Bosnian Sokolovic family, whose numerous members were holding some of the highest positions in the Ottoman administrations in 16th century and especially during the time od Mehmed-pasa, played some of the most important roles in its history. During his mandate, Mehmed-pasa exercised a nepotistic praxis of intisab and thus systematically brought his other cousins to the court, educated them, and placed them to significant posts in the Ottoman Empire. Although Mehmed-pasa was not the first and the only example of a statesman who strategically used members of his family to political ends, his longtime position as a grand vizier, and knowledge of the Ottoman religious and political mission, made this vizier and his network a unique phenomenon in the whole history of the Ottoman Empire. Mehmed-pasa himself strengthened his position by his marriage to the to princess ismihan, a daughter of prince Selim, the future Sultan Selim II, and thus connected himself to the Ottoman dynasty. However, the primary goal to which he aspired was not purely fulfilling personal interests, or his cousins’ interests, but primarily the prosperity of the Ottoman Empire.
As it is the case with many other personages, the information about the birth and early young age of Ferhad-pasa himself have not been known until now. Like other members of the Sokolovic family and the majority of the other Ottoman officials with Slavic origins, Ferhad Sokolovic probably came to the Ottoman court by dev§irme system upon the instructions of his cousin Mehmed-pasa Sokolovic. The oldest Ottoman chronicles, as well as other official documents, confirm that young men and women from Bosnia always had special status and treatment, both for their beauty and their character traits and intelligence. By the end of 15th and the beginning of 16th centuries, some of the major offices in the Ottoman court started to be held by the staff that was chosen by the dev§irme system, raised and educated in Islam, and faithful to Sultan. In time they overtook almost all the important offices in the state which were up to then held by the descendants of the famous Anatolian families, whose members played an important role in the establishment and development of the Ottoman dynasty,
SUMMARY | 275
and whose descendants were often right hand to the Ottoman sultans in the centuries to come as well. With the arrival of the educated staff chosen by dev§irme onto the important functions and positions, the intolerance and rivalry arose between them and the descendants of the famous Anatolian families. In that time, groups had already formed among the staff chosen by dev§irme, and these groups were mostly based on the same linguistical or ethnic origins, and the solidarity ruled among them.
After completing educational process at the Ottoman court, the first important function Ferhad was placed to was the office of ulufeciba§i. In this study, I propose that he himself could be the “ulufeciba§i Ferhad” whom Selaniki mentions in his History describing the siege of Siget 1566. together with his cousins Kurd-bey and Hasan-bey, sons of Mehmed-pasa. Becouse, soon after the battle of Siget, Ferhad-bey was appointed as a sanjakbey of sanjak Klis, while one of Mehmed-pasa’s sons, Kurd-bey, became sanjakbey of sanjak Hercegovina, and the other, Hasan-bey, was somewhat later appointed as sanjakbey of Smederevo. Since the three of them were close friends, coworkers and fellow fighters later as well, and on the top of all they were also close related, it is very reali-stical to suppose that they were together in the mentioned battle in the 1566. It is not excluded that the credits of that battle, and not exclusively family ties, contributed to the fact that Ferhad-pasa was promoted from the office of ulufeciba§i to a responsible position of the sanjakbey of sanjak Klis.
I devoted a chapter of this study to determining the identity of Ferhad-bey who was a sanjakbey of Klis in the period between 1558-60.1 discovered that he is not Sokolovic, as it was thought earlier in numerous reference literature.
Ferhad-bey was appointed as sanjakbey of Klis between 1567 and 1568, in the eve of the war of Cyprus. A lengthier chapter chronologically speaks about his military activities, his clashes with Venetian forces, as well as about conquering the new territories on the basis of different primary and secondary sources. A part of the chapter speaks about his peace activities as a member of delegation which had a task to oversee the process of demarcation in Dalmatia after the end of the war of Cyprus, which intermittently lasted from 1573 to 1576.
276 I llVOTNI PUT PRVOG BEGLERBEGA BOSNE: FERHAD-PASA SOKOLOVIC (1530. 1590.)
In the meantime, in March 1573, he was appointed as a sanjakbey of sanjak Bosnia. He soon undertook new expansionist actions in Pounje with the aim of taking fertile plains around Una, and then overtaking a strategically very important Habsburg fort, the fortress of Bihac. His offensive started after he defeated his dangerous rival, the commander of the Senj uskoks, Herbert von Auersberg in a direct clash, in the battle at Budacki in September 1575. Already in the end of this year he conquers many fortresses in Krajina one after another, and his conquests were finally completed by the conquest of Gvozdanski in January 1578. It can be assumed that his plan was the conquest of the mines of Zrinski, since he soon started with intensive exploitation of the mine wealth of Gvozdanski and surrounding mines. In this relation, he hired a great professional, the chief of Sultan cannon makers ( )Mehmed-
aga, who was appointed to oversee work in mines by a special decree, as well as pouring the cannons and cannon munition of greater calibre.
Ferhad-bey’s military actions caused worry and distress of the very elite of the Habsburg Empire. In the numerous counselings held in 1577 and 1578 in Vienna, Graz and Bruck on Mura, the attention was directed to the need of better protection of the Habsburg military borderlands, and especially Croatian and Slavonian military borderlands. However, the grand counter-offensive carried out by Habsburg forces led by Khevenhiiller with the aim of retrieving the borderland towns was unsuccessful.
Since Ferhad-bey managed to expand territories of both sanjak Klis and sanjak Bosnia, in September 1580 a new Ottoman administrative unit, Bosnian eyalet, was established. Ferhad-pasa, the first beylerbey of Bosnia, was appointed as head of the new unit. He was on this position until 1588, while also being on Krim as a beylerbey of Kefa from the summer 1584 to autumn 1585. His duty was exclusively to stifle a revolt of a member of Giraj dynasty, who joined Muscovites. In the place of the rebellious one, the Ottoman government placed a new, loyal han, while Ferhad-pasa stayed in Krim until the situation calmed down completely.
During that time he had serious health issues, and thus when he returned to eyalet Bosnia in the autumn 1585, he did not undertake any larger military actions. Previously he experienced several personal
SUMMARY I 277
traumas. His father, Rustem-bey, died, and his brother, Dervis-pasa, was killed even earlier in the conquests of Georgia. Apart from that, he already buried several of his children in Livno, and in 1579 his cousin and protector, the grand vizier Mehmed-pasa, was assassinated. He was especially grieved by the murder of his brother Ali-bey in 1586. Therefore, during this period he was focused on building the pious endowments in Banja Luka, mosques and other objects, restoration of Kastel, palace and on building numerous other endowments in Bosnian eyalet that were established during his government with the aim of strengthening the economy of the whole region. In the territory from Pecuh in Hungary to Banja Luka in Bosnia, from Hrvace in Croatia to Dobrun in Eastern Bosnia, he built many sacral and profane objects. He proved himself to be a generous benefactor, by supporting talented individuals, scholars, poets and chroniclers of his time.
Since during this period in 1587 his vakufnama was legalized too, it can be assumed that Ferhad-pasa had already then completed the construction of all the planned objects. He had a foreboding of an approaching death, since in the meantime he built a turbe in the courtyard of Ferhadija mosque in Banja Luka and ordered in vakufnama to be buried there, which was carried out later. He also defined that his descendants be the overseers of his vakuf and to be paid a certain amount for it. He, probably, already planned to live his old age in peace, at his estate in Podgorje, a part of Banja Luka. He himself was probably surprised when he was appointed as a beylerbey of eyalet of Budim in 1588. Namely, around 1588, the Ottoman sultan Murad III sent a request for the payment of biennal tax to Habsburg Emperor Rudolf II. Since this request was not answered, the whole burden of the task fell onto beylerbey of eyalet of Budim. Since the resolution was not to be found, Ferhad-pasa was appointed as a beylerbey of eyalet of Budim. As we could see from the previous examples, Ferhad-pasa successfully solved several crisis previously so it was hoped that he would resolve this crisis too. Despite all the misfortunes, owing to his diplomatic skills and persistence, Ferhad-pasa managed to resolve the issue for which he was apponted as Budim beylerbey.
In his letters to archduke Ernest in this period, one can see numerous noble gestures and positive traits for which certain Hungarian
278 j ZIVOTNI PUT PRVOG BEGLERBEGA BOSNE: FERH AD-PAS A SOKOLOVIC (1530.-1590.)
historians call him a knight. As a beylerbey of Budim, he already lost his youthful sharpness, which was in turn replaced by composure and wisdom gained through enormous life experience. The former youthful ardor seems to be gone already then, and it is hard to recognize Ferhad-bey the conqueror of the castles in Dalmatia and Bosnia, the commander of deli group, the winner of battle of Budacki, the vanquisher of Khe-venhiiller, “the tamer” of the rebellious Tatars, in this Ferhad-pasa, the beylerbey of Budim.
The last two years of his life Ferhad-bey spent in Budim eyalet. He was murdered there, “in his prime age”, and in the way he lived, “with a sword”.
