Summary
The literary production within the Bohemian lands in the 17th and 18th centuries re-
flected the new social situation, the changes in spiritual life and the increase of foreign
influences (mostly German and Romance). Texts were produced in two or three language
variations - usually Latin, Czech and German - which could differ somewhat with regard
to the presumed recipient. This monograph aims to contribute to the research of Baroque
writings in Bohemia, focusing mainly on the critical edition of the Latin Historia S. Joan-
nis Nepomućeni (1729) and its contemporary translation into Czech, Zpráva historická
o živote sv. Jana Nepomuckého [A Historical Report on the Life of St. John of Nepomuk]
(1730), i.e. texts published in the year of the canonization of John of Nepomuk and in the
following year. Hence, apart from the literary-historical, linguistic-stylistic and transla-
tion analysis of both works the book outlines the wider cultural and historical context
and examines the texts with regard to elements characteristic for the period and the sub-
ject matter.
Both works in question were published anonymously; the first person to acknowledge
the authorship of the Jesuit historian Maximilianus Wietrowsky (1660-1737) was Jan
Tomás Berghauer in the second volume of Protomartyr poenitentiae (1761). Our mono-
graph offers a detailed biography of Wietrowsky, based on the analysis of predominantly
manuscript sources (Literae annuae, Catalogi triennales, Catalogi breves, Epistolae Genera-
lium ad Nostros), together with an overview of his literary production and an outline of
his historiographic method. Maximilianus Wietrowsky studied philosophy and, in ac-
cordance with the Jesuit practice, taught in the lower schools of the Order. He spent the
larger part of his theology studies in Rome, with a year of tertianship in Florence, then
came back home to teach at the Faculty of Arts in Olomouc and transferred to Prague
in 1695, where he took his vows. He then taught philosophy and theology at the Prague
university, and in 1701-1704 served as Rector of the college of Nové Mésto in Prague.
His work there was accompanied by unspecified disputes. Possibly because of them, he
remained in the lower strata of the Order’s administration after he left his post as Rector:
he led the seminaries in Krumlov and Hlohov, served as the tertian instructor in Jičin,
superior of the Jesuit residence in Svatá Hora and superior of the Dresden mission. From
1718 he worked as an assessor of the Prague Archbishop Consistory and in 1718-1731
served as confessor to the Archbishop of Prague, Ferdinand Khuenburg. In this period,
Wietrowsky concerned himself primarily with literary production. His biographical data,
records from Jesuit catalogues and list of works are summarized in the enclosed charts.
Wietrowsky’s abundant literary production comprises of more than twenty works, and
can be divided into historical, theological, philosophical and ascetic texts. His theological
and philosophical writings are closely bound to his pedagogical activities at the universi-
ties in Olomouc and Prague. The largest part of his works is historiographic, with a focus
on the history of the Church in Europe (heretical movements, conflicts of doctrines, ecu-
menical councils, papal primacy and biographies of the Popes). All these historiographic
texts were rather unusually published in two formats (12° and 2°), while thematically
related folio prints were bound into convolutes. Wietrowsky’s works were inspired by
the texts of the French Jesuit historian of the Church, Louis Maimbourg (1610-1686),
whose books were indexed as prohibited and Pope Innocent XI ordered his expulsion
from the Jesuit order. Comparative textual analysis shows that Wietrowsky practically
translated the original French works into Latin. It was probably Maimbourg’s conflict
with Rome that prevented Wietrowsky from directly naming his French precursor as his

source. Jesuit order correspondence, nevertheless, shows that a number of Wietrowsky’s
translations had to undergo a complicated approval process through the General of the
Order in Rome.
The work researched in our monograph, História S. Joannis Nepomućeni, is rather dif-
ferent in character. Wietrowsky was entrusted with this prestigious task under the offi-
cial patronage of the Prague Archbishop Consistoiy because of his language skills (Jesuit
sources confirm that he spoke not only Czech and German, but also French, Italian and
some Spanish), but also on the basis of his already large literary production and expertise
in work with historical sources. While writing the História, Wietrowsky no doubt used the
experience he gained as a member of the judicial panel during the hearings in the first be-
atification process of John of Nepomuk. It is evident from the minutes of the Consistory
meeting and the contemporary printed list of Wietrowsky’s works that he was the author
both of the Latin version of the História and of its German translation. There is no evidence
for the Czech variant of the text. The authorship of the original is further proved by the
front page of the French translation - a significant discovery, since it had been presumed
that the work existed only in three language mutations. However, the single exemplary
of the French text has been preserved as a part of a convolute of Nepomućene texts, and
only contains the title page and first four pages of the French translation. It is therefore
uncertain whether the text was translated in its entirety or whether the French pages are
a mere proof print. This chapter of our book introduces the life and works of Wietrowsky
as a Baroque historian; the biographical data and overview of his career in the Order are
accompanied by personal records, which illustrate the evolution of Wietrowsky’s person-
ality and some of his character traits. They assemble a portrait of a man who thanks to
his intellectual capacities, language skills and indefatigable diligence and activity created
a broad scope of works with an irreplaceable role in the Baroque literary canon.
To place História S. Joannis Nepomućeni in the historical context, it is necessary to sum-
marize the formation of the Nepomućene legendist tradition. The historical personality
of John of Pomuk is not discussed here apart from basic personal data, since it has al-
ready been examined in many preceding works. To understand the Saint’s “second life”,
we must look at the way Nepomuk’s personality was portrayed in contemporary sources,
together with the literary treatment of his fate in later works. Kronika česká [Bohemian
Chronicle] (1541) by Václav Hájek z Libočan drew from the oldest sources and divided the
historical personality of Nepomuk in two. This chronicle became one of the basic treatises
on the history of Bohemia, incorporating most subject matter of the future Nepomućene
literary canon. It served as the main source of the Latin História Regni Bohemiae (1552) by
Joannes Dubravius, which helped spread the Nepomućene story abroad. A more exten-
sive Nepomućene treatise, De Beato Joanne Nepomućeno (1668) by Jan Ignác Dlouhoveský,
was a point of departure for Bohuslaus Balbinus, who wrote a Latin biography of the Saint
entitled Vita B. Joannis Nepomućeni (1671). This work became an inexhaustible source of
inspiration not only for the further development of Nepomućene literature, but also for
the Nepomućene cult itself and its artistic manifestations. Its wording, incorporated into
the Bollandist collection Acta Sanctorum (1680), later served as a basis for the canoniza-
tion process and ultimately established the textual tradition of the Nepomućene legend.
In the Baroque era, the cult of John of Nepomuk was already an indispensable part
of Bohemian religious life. Continual efforts to officialise the cult led to two informative
processes held in Prague in 1715-1720 under the patronage of the Archbishop of Prague,
Ferdinand Khuenburg. Based on these, John of Nepomuk was beatified in 1721 by Pope
Innocent XIII. In 1722-1729, a third, apostolic process took place, conducted by the Holy
See itself. Upon its conclusion, Pope Benedict XIII approved the act and set the canoniza-
tion date for March 19,1729 in the Lateran Basilica. John of Nepomuk quickly became the
most worshipped of the Czech saints, revered as a defender of the Seal of Confession and

patron of good reputation both within and beyond the geographical boundaries of Bohe-
mia. Together with grand festivities, processions, sermons, oratories, dramatic works,
paintings and sculptures, the new saint inspired a number of poetic and prosaic works,
among these the official Latin biography written by Maximilianus Wietrowsky, Historici
S. Joannis Nepomućeni.
The print comprises 256 pages of quarto format and is divided into six books (chap-
ters). In the first two chapters, the author vividly narrates all key parts of the Nepomućene
legend, inserting minor episodes, historical excursions, citations of quotes and his own
opinions. In the ensuing chapters, he describes the reverence paid to the Saint’s tomb
and the discovery of his alleged tongue, mixing traditional stories with the witness state-
ments from the beatification and canonization processes. He proves the strength of the
cult by enumerating the votive offerings by Nepomuk’s tomb, alternating exemplary sto-
ries of punishments of disrespectful blasphemers with motivational stories of miracles
and graces performed through John’s intercession (especially curing of various ailments,
lifesaving interventions and defence of good reputation). A detailed description of the
beatification and canonization processes follows. At this point, Wietrowsky incorporates
into the sixth chapter the entire text of the hymn to John of Nepomuk by Georgius Pon-
tanus, four prayers to St. John, statistical reports (number of masses and communions)
and three decrees from the canonization process. In the conclusion of his work, he repro-
duces in full the Bull of Canonization issued by Pope Benedict XIII.
The linguistic and stylistic analysis of the text shows that Wietrowsky writes in Clas-
sical Latin, refined by the influence of ancient authors but at the same time enriched
with elements of Archaic, Vulgar, Medieval (especially scholarly and clerical) or Human-
ist Latin. The text is decorated with borrowed words, especially from Greek, and terms
of art ֊ mainly medical and legal terminology, less frequently borrowed from artisan or
miller vocabulary. Morphology stays in keeping with Ciceronian Latin; archaisms are
used rarely and only with the practical purpose of distinguishing homonyms and ho-
monymous suffixes. Syntax combines the Classical period with longer sentences formed
by a larger number of shorter kola, together with some stylistic features of contemporaiy
spoken language. The text is embellished with manifold stylistic ornament, rhetorical
devices and poetic expressions, which enhance the narrative and supplement its infor-
mation value with artistic dimension (Baroque imagery, natural motifs, colours, sensoiy
effects). It is further adorned by expressive vocabulary, naturalism or idiomatic expres-
sions. The author incorporates examples from classical history and mythology or Biblical
parallels, together with humoristic elements or displays of patriotism.
With regard to its sources, Historia S. Joannis Nepomućeni can be characterised as
a skilfully composed compilation, which (as was common at the time of its creation)
draws directly and indirectly from the main Nepomućene literaiy works and other pri-
mary materials. Wietrowsky quotes historical, literary and theological works, together
with archival records from the beatification and canonization processes. The primary in-
spiration source for his text was the Saint’s Italian biography by Jesuit Francesco Galluz-
zi, Vita di San Giovanni Nepomućeno. Wietrowsky translated this text almost completely,
supplementing it with domestic textual tradition. Above all, he drew from the Bollandist
version of Bohuslaus Balbinus’ treatment of the Nepomućene legend, De B. Joanne Nepo-
mućeno (1680). He adopted all the main points of the narrative from Balbinus, taking
some of the information directly from Balbinus and some filtered through Galluzzi’s text.
In fact, he translated Balbinus’ text from Italian back into Latin, sometimes with the help
of the original, in other parts in his own words. He also integrated into his work the
editors’ notes that accompanied the Bollandist edition of Balbinus’ text. The sections re-
ferring to particular miracles or examples of Nepomućene reverence and the chapters
on beatification and canonization are much more detailed and comprehensive than in

Galluzzi. Wietrowsky gets his overall inspiration from the Italian source but at the same
time draws on both handwritten and printed judicial deeds (especially Acta utriusque pro-
cessus, 1725). His text is supplemented by a large annotation apparatus in the margins;
the notes, however, come from Galluzzi’s work, from the Bollandist annotations in Bal-
binus’ legend and above all from the accounts of the beatification process. This leads to
a conclusion that Wietrowsky did not necessarily work with original sources.
Translation analysis concludes the theoretical part of our book. In cultural history,
translations played an indispensable role - they enabled transmission of knowledge and
general cultural and spiritual exchange, supported social and economic transformation
and helped establish and improve vernacular languages. The typology of Early Modem
translations stems from the basic distinction between translations into Latin and transla-
tions from Latin into vernacular languages, which were more numerous. In the Bohemian
lands, the Early Modem translations usually have an interpretive character, with a pre-
vailing tendency to adapt and paraphrase, which make the text more accessible for the
domestic reader and accentuate its patriotic, moralistic or religious, educative and, final-
ly, entertainment functions. The translators therefore usually treat the original text with
considerable freedom (they adapt the texts motivically and alter both sujet and fabula so
that the Czech mutation of the text would better serve their intended purpose). The shifts
in the story often serve to reinforce the epic line, reducing or omitting static components
or elements that would hinder the narrative. At the same time, the translation amplifies
and supplements the original, enriching it with expressivity and reinforcing its impact
in comparison to the stylistically neutral original. The textual adjustments serve to make
the work more accessible and simplify it for less educated readership; simultaneously,
the translator strives to achieve a more pronounced effect by stressing the most interest-
ing motifs and omitting less attractive parts. Typical for this period is the accentuation
of the text per se and suppression of the personality of the translator - whose name is
often absent from the title page and without reference from other sources he remains
anonymous to this day.
The Czech version of Historia S. Joannis Nepomuceni is not very typical for its time; it
does not correspond to the Baroque custom of translations and adaptations, where the
Czech variants underwent significant changes and shifts. No major simplification takes
place; all parts of the original text are preserved (i.e. division into six books, statistical
reports, celebratory hymn, prayers, decrees and the Bull of Canonization). The Czech ver-
sion does not differ much in length from the Latin text. The official documents, e.g. the
decrees and the Papal Bull, are translated very precisely (almost word for word). Nepo-
muk’s biography and depictions of his various miracles are translated adequately and,
in fact, rather accurately. The only major adjustments were made in the quotations from
the deeds, account of the beatification process, witness statements, notarial records etc.
With regard to the presumed recipient, the translator omits or shortens the non-narrative
passages, skips complicated descriptive sections, technical specifications, descriptions
of objects of art etc. On the other hand, he clarifies unclear parts, supplies his own ex-
planatory notes and comments and supplies context where needed. He enriches the text
with poetic, metaphorical, expressive or naturalistic elements; in many places, he adds
emotional and intimate tones, which contribute to a more pronounced b aro quiz ation
of the text. The shifts in translation show his language aptitude: he is able to replace
a Latin idiom with an adequate Czech textual ornament (saying, simile, metaphor). Apart
from taking the recipient into consideration, some of the eliminations and changes in
the translation may be attributed to time pressure which probably accompanied the crea-
tion of the Czech adaptation, since the most frequent omissions concern unclear pas-
sages, more complicated constructions or repetitive parts. From the places where the
original text was misunderstood by the translator, it can be deduced that the author of the
534
Summary
Czech translation was probably not one and the same as the author of the Latin original -
Maximilianus Wietrowsky.
The intended recipient of the original text was a Latin-reading audience, i.e. both the
secular and religious intellectual public. Apart from the domestic scholarly community,
the Latin text was certainly also meant for foreign readership (proved by multiple copies
preserved in foreign libraries). The Czech translation ֊ similarly to the German muta-
tion - would make the text more accessible for the domestic readership. The simplifica-
tion was not very significant, however, as even for the Czech reader the text could be
rather demanding because of the historical excursions, theological notes or citations of
official records. For the less educated recipients, the narrative passages of the text would
be sufficient (i.e. the biographical narrative and the description of individual miracles
and graces). Consequently, the function of both texts is to be informative and educational
(to spread the word about a virtuous life and martyred death; for the clerical audience,
Nepomuk’s silence and preservation of the Seal of Confession were a model to follow),
but also persuasive (to argue the importance of the veneration of saints and efficacy of
their intercession), and by all means possible, entertaining (to narrate a story, usually
with a happy ending).
The critical edition of the text in Czech and Latin is introduced by a comprehensive edi-
tor’s note, which stems from the current practice of publishing Early Modern texts both
in Latin and Czech. No unified set of editorial rules exists as of yet; however, it is possible
to build on the elaborate rules which have served for the critical edition of the complete
works of Joannes Amos Comenius, Opera omnia. Our transcription of the Latin text also
employs the rules formulated by Martin Svatoš for the set of publications Fontes renim
Bohemicarum recentioris aevi. The edition of the Czech text stems especially from the rules
formulated by Josef Vintr and from the editorial approach coined by Alexandr Stich and
Radek Lunga in the preparation of the edition of Staré paméti kutnohorské [The Old Tales
of Kutná Hora] by Jan Korinek. These rules were modified for the use of this particular
publication with regard to the genre of the text, its specific character (Latin original and
its contemporary Czech translation) and the goal of the edition. Our main aim was to
make the text as accessible as possible for the reader and to enhance its understanding
while preserving its individual peculiarities and elements typical for the time.
The mirrored edition of the Czech and Latin variant preserves the running headers and
margin notes, completed by an extensive annotation apparatus. The textual-critical notes
are supplied with an identification or specification of the quoted source, commentaiy
regarding the less usual linguistic phenomena and Latin expressions, and explanation
of words and word forms which are not understandable in modem Czech. The factual
annotations attempt to clarify the context, comment on episodes from the Nepomućene
legendist tradition and provide basic information about historical personalities, circum-
stances and locations necessary for better understanding of the text. To enhance comfort-
able reading, the edition is equipped with a name index, list of used abbreviations and
overview of the cited works. We conclude with the list of works used in preparing this
edition. The graphic part of the publication is illustrated with photocopies of title pages
and selected sources.
Our examination of the multilingual character of Baroque literature, followed by the
critical edition of both texts, aims to contribute to a better understanding of Czech liter-
ary history, to introduce the personality of the important Jesuit historian Maximilianus
Wietrowsky, and above all to make accessible his representative work on St. John of
Nepomuk, whose cult is once again perceived as an important Baroque phenomenon.
In his successful compilation, the author of the Latin original managed to combine all
traditional ingredients of the Nepomućene legend, narrate old and new tales of miracles
and graces and at the same time to introduce the lesser-known facts of the canonization

proceedings to his contemporaries. All this in high literary language, perfected by classi-
cal models, stemming from Humanist Latin but enriched with a broad scope of stylistic
embellishments and rhetorical devices. The translator into Czech did justice to the Latin
original. He faithfully preserved the character of the original text, apart from some minor
omissions, which served to simplify the text; elsewhere, he made the text more vivid and
underlined its Baroque imagery. Both authors thus prepared an entertaining and instruc-
tive reading experience, which speaks to us over the centuries.
