SHORT CONCLUSION
The Institute of Spiritual and Cultural Heritage of the Alba-
nian — Skopje with the support of the Forum ZFD, on 11th of
September 2014, organized scientific conference on subject
“FIRST WORLD WAR, 1914 ֊ 1918”, in which participa-
ted scholars from the Institute, State University of Tetovo,
University of South East Europe in Tetovo, Institute of History
“Ali Hadri” Prishtina, Albanian language Institute — Prishtina,
Institute of National History — Skopje and other researchers.
The conference was honored with the participation and opening
remarks of the USA Ambassador in Macedonia, Paul Vohlers,
German Ambassador in Macedonia, Kristine Althauser, and the
minister of Education and Science, Abdilaqini Ademi.
In this conference were discussed different topics that are
related to the position of Albanians during the First World
War, the situation in Macedonia, but also in Kosovo during
the First World War, while with different speeches was also
addressed the state of Drenica and Elbasan in the FWW. A
special segment in the conference was dedicated to the topic:
The Peace Conference of Versailles in 1919, in the context of
First World War and the diplomatic communication of
Albanians with President W. Wilson during the period of the
Peace Conference of 1919. Special emphasize was put during
the conference to the treatment of Albanians and their
territories by the Serbian propaganda during the First World
War, but also to territorial pretensions and the issue of
Albanian borders as well as activities of Azem Galica during
the FWW. The conference had in its focus also Bulgarian
diplomatic relations, for Albania and Albanians, in 1914, and a

scientific view over the reflection of FWW in the Albanian
and Macedonian historiography.
Scientific conference “FIRST WORLD WAR, 1914 ֊
1918” also treated the involvement of military groups of Esad
Pasha in the First World War, according to British archive
documents.
Researches in the conference concluded that Great Powers
have had great interest toward Balkans, while the role of
Balkan in the geopolitical area was very important. This fact,
according to the conference’s researchers, is proven also by
the ongoing interest and the important role in the designing
of regional policies of the Great States, mainly of United
States of America and other countries, members of European
Union related to developments in Balkan.
By treating the position of Kosovo during the First World
War was concluded that unfortunately Kosovo and other
Albanian regions outside of independent Albania instead of
being liberated suffered yet another occupation, even more
brutal from the new Serbian — Montenegrin oppressor.
It was also concluded that Drenica during the First World
War was the most troubled territory of this part of the Balkan,
while Azem Bejta and his groups of the Movement known as
“kachaks” kept alive the idea of liberation war.
In this war, British archive documents show about 1800
fighters of Esad Pasha, engaged in the frontal line against
Austrian—Hungarian army. Of course, both the Albanian Pash
and its soldiers were paid by great powers, whose seat was in
Thessalonica, at the same place where was the seat of the
Government of Esad Pasha. During the First World War,
although the Albanian state had declared neutrality, non of the

involved parties had respected its political position, even more,
Albanian settlements became war arena of brutal battles.
Organizers of the conference, as well as participants, evaluated
as successful the work of the conference, by concluding se
printing of these materials would be a valuable contribution
for the history science.
