Summary
The present publication is the first attempt at a synthetic approach to Bernard Pietrzak’s output: as a composer, an organist, a choirmaster and a lecturer at the Music Academy in Lodz. Modern composing techniques in combination with the force of expression and emotional intensity is a distinctive feature of Pietrzak’s music. He referred to sources of European music e.g. Gregorian chant, placing it in the modern, sonoristic context. First of all, however, he was a creator of organ music, who treated this instrument as a source of new sonorous qualities, thereby laying the foundations for modern organ virtuosity.
Pietrzak’s output originates from the source common for all innovatory actions -from the dodecaphonic technique whose specific formulation, typical of the author, is presented in the first chapter of the work. The tendency to abandon apriori serial standards while preserving the completeness of the twelve-sound material, observed in the mid-sixties, constitutes a new quality against the background of the dodecaphonic episode. This is the twelve-sound concept characteristic of the postserial phase, liberated from the burden of free atonality. The twelve-sound compositions discussed in the second chapter constitute in Bernard Pietrzak’s output a link between serialism and sonority. The trend in which pure sound values of the material were exposed is the most significant part of his output. It is filled with a number of symphony works, including the most interesting, Con dolore, and organ pieces, including the most popular composition, Al fresco. In the last chapter his vocal compositions, a capella songs and pieces of music for voice with accompaniment have been presented. In view of their functional character the author was inclined to simplify his musical language and abandon sonorous experiments.
The absence of analytical works on Bernard Pietrzak’s output (apart from a few articles dealing with organ music) made me discuss in greater detail some of his compositions, concentrate on the question of his composing technique and tracing its evolution, as well as present the most important features of his style. The analytical section is supplemented with annexes: a catalogue of his output containing a complete list of his compositions along with a statement of their substantiated performances, and a list of the most important dates marking his composing, teaching and choir-conducting activity.
