An integrated membrane system includes two or more membrane processes in the same
industrial cycle, or combines a membrane process (e.g. microfiltration, ultrafiltration,
nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, electrodialysis, gas separation) with a conventional
separation system. The advantages are improved product quality, plant compactness,
reduced environmental impact, and energy savings.
Integrated Membrane Systems and Processes provides many case studies to illustrate
the applications in seawater desalination, wastewater treatment, and bioseparations
in biotechnology and food industries. Also included are inorganic applications, for
example, integration of membrane reactors with a fuel cell; membranes in the integrated
gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant; and the coupling of a membrane reactor
with a solar plant.
Each chapter gives careful analysis of the technical aspects of, and reviews the advances
and improvements in, choosing an integrated membrane system over conventional
methodologies.
