Summary
This five-part volume Hom ines scientiarum
Thirty Stories o f Czech
Science and Philosophy is an accompanying yet independent publication
th at presents edited interview s w ith select Czech scientists and
philosophers, including biographical details about them. It supplements
thirty short films produced by the University of Pardubice (Departm ent
of Philosophy, Faculty of A rts and Philosophy) in collaboration with
the Institute of Contemporary History, Academy of Sciences of the
Czech Republic (Centre for the History of Sciences and Humanities).
This publication and the short films were produced as a part of the
project Idea o f University.
By idea of university we mean a broadly considered idea of unity
of knowledge and the com m on ground for various scientific fields.
Scientists and philosophers have been selected to com m ent on many
fields of hum an knowledge, ranging from philosophy, chem istry,
biology, physics, medicine, m athem atics and electrotechnics to history,
anthropology and theology. The rationale behind this selection is not
to cover every scientific field — in only th irty films and chapters this
would be hardly possible — but to highlight the exten t of variety
within the main three focus points: philosophy, chem istry and biology.
These fields are typical by interdisciplinary overlap with other fields,
and by com paring various personalities of diverse tem peram ent,
experience, generation, confession and expertise, we can present the
discipline m ore fully, and thus make the spectator or reader realize
how endlessly colourful science and philosophy actually is, and even
how the history of science and philosophy is created from personal
approaches, in terests and choices of individuals. Although all of
the people discussed in this volume are e xp erts in their specia
lized sub-fields, they all share the highest regard for other fields, and
stress the im portance of education in culture, and they also appreciate
interdisciplinarity. This insight into unique personal views was made
possible by th e oral history m ethod. A part from these individual
traces of the history of science, several common them es stick out

throughout these testimonies: Czech history, the suppression of the
Nazi and Communist régimes, exile, and politically motivated distortions
of scientific theories. The publication and film series is primarily
addressed to university students of all levels, but also to high school
students and teachers.

The fifth part of the series of publications about prominent Czech
scientists and philosophers of the 20th century presents Dr. Emil
Kolben (1862-1943), a Czech inventor, electrical engineer and
entrepreneur. He is discussed by Dr. Miloá Hofejü, a historian of
economics and technical history at the National Technical Museum in
Prague, and Ing. Petr Cech, the owner of an open-air museum of
electrotechnics. After graduating from the German Technical University
in Prague, Kolben gained valuable experience abroad, especially in the
US. He soon became one of the leading personalities of the rapidly
developing electrical field, in which he not only captured important
progressive trends, but he also introduced a number of innovations.
After his return to Prague, he launched his own electrical engineering
business within the renowned firm Czech-Moravian Kolben-Danék
(CKD). His successful business career continued even after the collapse
of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but the German Occupation of the
Czech Lands interrupted his business: because of his Jewish origin, he
was forced to abandon his business and his property was confiscated.
He died in the Terezin concentration camp. Among other honors, Emil
Kolben was awarded the Austrian Order of the Iron Crown 3rd class.
The next chapter is devoted to the mathematician Prof. Georg
A. Pick (1859-1942), with whom Einstein discussed issues relating
to the mathematization of the general theory of relativity during his
stay in Prague in 1911-12. Pick studied mathematics and physics at
the University of Vienna, but then worked for the German part of the
University in Prague. He has published dozens of works, including on
linear algebra, invariant theory, integral calculus, complex analysis,
potential theory, differential and integral equations, functional analysis
and differential geometry. He belonged to the followers of Ernst Mach,
who campaigned for the invitation of Albert Einstein to Prague
University. In 1911-1912, he became one of Einstein s closest colleagues
in Prague. He was deported to Terezin in 1942 and died two weeks
later.
With Prof. Bohumil Nëmec (1873-1966), we move on to the field
of biology and botany. We interviewed the grandson of this eminent
plant physiologist, politician and presidential candidate, Ivan Smid,
then the historian of biology Jan Janko, Nëmec s pupil Jan Krekule
and, finally, Némec’s much younger friend, professor of medicine, Josef
Kouteckÿ. Nëmec gained a degree in biology at the Faculty of Arts of
the Czech Charles-Ferdinand University. He founded the University
Institute of Plant Physiology. In 1907, he was appointed to a full
professorship and a year later he was elected to the Czech Academy
of Sciences and Arts. His main research area focused on géotropisme
and phytohormones, and he also contributed to the study of plant
cell structure. He played a key role in promoting classical genetics
(mendelisme) in the Czech Lands and he helped popularise botanical
themes. During the academic year 1921-1922 he became the rector
of Charles University. He was also politically active for the National
Democratic Party: in 1918-20 he was a member of the Revolutionary
National Assembly, then a senator 1920-1929. In 1935 he was a can
didate for Czechoslovak president and ran against Edvard Benes, but
finally he withdrew from the election.
Asst. Prof. Jan Krekule (born 1931) is a plant physiologist. He
graduated from the Faculty of Agronomy, University of Agriculture in
Prague. He developed his PhD thesis at the Biological Institute of the
Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (his supervisor was Prof. Bohumil
Nëmec) and then became a researcher at the Institute of Experimental
Botany, Academy of Sciences. He led the Department of Biology of
plant development and was a deputy director of the Institute. For over
twenty years he lectured at the Faculty of Charles University on plant
growth and development. He was one of the leading representatives
of the developmental biology of plants, and focused on florigenic
effects of plant hormones, endogenous rhythms of flowering and the
ecological conditions of the transition of the reproductive phases in
plants. He is well-known for his effords to popularize science: he
initiated an award for popularizing science called Vojtech Naprstek s
Honorary Medal of the Academy of Sciences, and he was one of the foun
ders of the Magnesia Litera multidisciplinary literary prize.
The next chapter brings us to the world of medicine. Prof. Josef
Koutecky (born 1930) is one of the founders of Czechoslovak pediatric
oncology. After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine, Charles
University, he transferred to the Faculty of Paediatrics, Charles University,
where he launched, in 1964, a new field — pediatric oncology. He is
credited with being the founder of this branch in Czechoslovakia.
In 1987 he was appointed to a full professorship. After four terms in
office, he served as the dean of the Second Faculty of Medicine, Charles
University (1990-1997, 2000-2006). He was also a vice-rector of Char
les University for International Relations (1997-2000). He received
numerous awards, including the Medal for Merit IInd class, gold medal
of Charles University, J. E. Purkyng Medal, Medal of Honour of Acade
my of the Sciences of the Czech Republic, De scientia et humanitate
Optime Meritis and the „Czech Brains“ National Prize. He is an admirer
of art and music.
The series closes with an interview with the experimental phy
sicist, Prof. Stanislav Veprek (born 1939), who has been working in
Switzerland and Germany since the 1970s. After graduating from the
Faculty of M athematics and Physics, Charles University (1963), he
worked at the Institute of Physics at the Czechoslovak Academy of
Sciences (1962-1968). In the years 1968-1971, he was Visiting Research
Fellow at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. Since 1971,
he has been living and working abroad (Switzerland, Germany), first
at the University of Zurich, where he earned a second doctorate and
was habilitated in the field of chemistry. Since 1988, he has been
working as a director and a professor (now emeritus) at the Institute
of Inorganic Materials Chemistry, Technische Universität München. At
first, he focused on the diagnosis and spectroscopy of low-temperature
plasma glow discharge. Then he turned to nanocrystalline silicon. He
is the author of the so-called „boronization in tokamak“ for research
into controlled nuclear fusion. He is also the co-author of plasma-chemi
cal methods for the restoration and conservation of archaeological
metal finds. His cu rren t area of interest is focused on superhard
- 46 -
nanocomposites. He was awarded a number of scientific awards,
including the Blaise Pascal Medal of the European Academy of Sciences.
