Summary
This five-part volume Homines sd en tia ru m
Thirty S to n e s o f Czech
Science and Philosophy is an accompanying yet independent publication
that presents edited interviews with select Czech scientists and
philosophers, including biographical details about them. It supplements
thirty short films produced by the University of Pardubice (Department
of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts and Philosophy) in collaboration with the
Institute of Contemporary History, Academy of Sciences of the Czech
Republic (Centre for the History of Sciences and Humanities). This
publication and the short films were produced as a part of the project
Idea o f University.
By idea of university we mean a broadly considered idea of unity of
knowledge and the common ground for various scientific fields. Scientists
and philosophers have been selected to comment on many fields of
human knowledge, ranging from philosophy, chemistry, biology, physics,
medicine, mathematics and electrotechnics to history, anthropology and
theology. The rationale behind this selection is not to cover every
scientific field — in only thirty films and chapters this would be hardly
possible — but to highlight the extent of variety within the main three
focus points: philosophy, chemistry and biology. These fields are typical
by interdisciplinary overlap with other fields, and by comparing various
personalities of diverse temperament, experience, generation, confession
and expertise, we can present the discipline more fully, and thus
make the spectator or reader realize how endlessly colourful science
and philosophy actually is, and even how the history of science and
philosophy is created from personal approaches, interests and choices
of individuals. Although all of the people discussed in this volume are
experts in their specialized sub-fields, they all share the highest regard
for other fields, and stress the importance of education in culture, and
they also appreciate interdisciplinarity. This insight into unique personal
views was made possible by the oral history method. Apart from these
individual traces of the history of science, several common themes
stick out throughout these testimonies: Czech history, the suppression
of the Nazi and Communist régimes, exile, and politically motivated
distortions of scientific theories. The publication and film series is
primarily addressed to university students of all levels, but also to
high school students and teachers.

The fourth part of the series of publications about prominent Czech
scientists and philosophers of the 20th century presents personalities
from the biological and biochemical fields. Biologist, physician and
immunologist Prof. Milan HaSek (1925-1984) graduated from the
Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague. Hasek began his
scientific career in the Department of Biology at the Czechoslovak
Academy of Sciences. In the 1950s he was influenced by the Lysenkoist
doctrine, propagated in the Soviet Union. He then abandoned this
biological theory. He participated in the establishment of the Institute
of Experimental Biology and Genetics at the Czechoslovak Academy
of Sciences (where he was the director of this Institute in 1962-1970).
His main area was immune reactions in transplantation. Later he also
researched transplantation and tumor immunity, and mechanisms of
viral oncogenesis. His theory of immunological tolerance has been
mentioned in connection with the team led by the British immunologist
Sir Peter Medawar, who won the Nobel Prize in 1960 for discoveries in
the same area. These and other topics are explained by the immunologist
Prof. Juraj Ivanyi from King s College London, and Prof. Jan Svoboda
from the Institute of Molecuar Genetics, Academy of Sciences of the
Czech Republic, former younger colleagues of Milan HaSek.
In the next interview, Prof. Karel Raska jr. (born 1939), a physician,
molecular virologist, geneticist, immunologist and imunopathologist
living in the US, shares his memories about his famous father, the
epidemiologist Prof. Karel Raska (1909-1987). He also speaks about
his life and scientific experiences. His father was one of the leading
organizers of Czechoslovak health program m e after 1945, and his
mother, Prof. Helena Raskova (1913-2010), was a pharmacologist. With
a degree from the Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague,
Karel Raska jr. entered the Institute of Organic Chemistry and
-

Biochemistry at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. He completed
an internship at Yale University in the US (1965-1967), and after the
Soviet-led invasion in August 1968, he emigrated to the US. He started
his career as a researcher at Rutgers Medical School, respectively Rutgers
Medical University in New Jersey, where he works to the present day,
as a professor of microbiology, molecular genetics and pathology. In
1965, he won the award granted by the Czechoslovak Academy of
Sciences, and in 1992-2015 he was elected, on an annual basis, as one
of the „Best Doctors in America“. He was also awarded the Silver
Medal of the Senate of the Czech Republic and the Medal of Merit 1st
class.
Biologist and virologist Prof. Jan Svoboda (born 1931) speaks about
education, democracy, and his discoveries in the field of cellular and
viral genetics. He worked his whole life as a researcher at the Institute
of Molecular Genetics, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (in the years
1991-1999 he served as its director). In the 1960s, he became a pioneer
of cellular genetics in Czechoslovakia. He introduced new techniques
(such as cell hybridization), and later methods of molecular biology,
including cloning of the first unique gene in the former Czechoslovakia.
He specializes in cellular and viral genetics, causes of tumor formation
and tum or viruses. His research on the retroviral life cycle, and the
causes of serious diseases such as leukemia, cancer and AIDS, has been
formally recognised and acknowledged. He is one of the discoverers of
reverse transcription. These discoveries have far-reaching implications
both for understanding basic cell biological processes and for direct
use in medicine. He has won numerous major Czech and international
scientific awards, eg. the „Czech Brains“ Government National Award.
Microbiologist and molecular geneticist Prof. Helena Kopecka
(born 1931) draws on her activities in exile, in culture and science.
She has made significant contributions to the molecular biology of
viruses and in its practical use in the field of medical virology, despite
the difficult life circumstances. Her parents were actively involved in
the anti-Nazi resistence, her mother died during the war in exile, and
her father was sentenced to death, but survived. For political reasons,
Helena Kopecka had difficulties in applying to university. She graduated
as late as 1960 (distance learning) from microbiology at the Faculty
: S
of Science, Charles University in Prague, and then she joined the
Institute of Microbiology, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Her first
study was published in the prestigious journal Nature. In August 1968,
she emigrated to France penniless, with two young sons. She managed
to secure a position at the institute CRNS (Trench National Scientific
Center for Scientific Research) in Strassbourg. Later, she moved to
Paris, then to Stanford, California, in the US, before finally coming
back to the Pasteur Institute in Paris, where she led a research group
in molecular virology, dedicated to the study of viruses that caused
serious diseases, such as hepatitis, HIV and polio. In 1985, she was
appointed director of research at CNRS. Together with her team she
can be given credit for the eradication of polio in the world. She won
numerous international scientific awards, including a Memorial Medal
named after General Rudolf Medek.
Biochemist and physiologist Prof. Helena Illnerova (born 1937),
the first female president of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech
Republic, raises the question of the biological clock in organisms, as
well as the importance of family and status of women in science. She
graduated from biochemical studies at the Faculty of Science, Charles
University. She developed her scientific career at the Physiological
Institute at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Her research area is
the essence of the biological clock in organisms, particularly mammals,
as well as the control and synchronization of biorhythms at the molecular
level, both during the 24-hour day and during the seasons. In her
experiments, which have been recognised worldwide, she focused on
the pineal gland, which produces the hormone melatonin. Illnerova and
her colleagues discovered how the rhythm of melatonin in the pineal
gland was controlled by lighting, and showed that both the daily rhythm
in the production of the hormone melatonin, and biological clocks
controlled by melatonin, were modulated by external factors such as
the length of the day. At the international level, her team is known as the
„Czech school of chronobiology“. She won major Czech and foreign
awards, for example the Czech Medal of Merit IInd class.
In the next interview, biochemicist Prof. Eva Zazimalova (bom 1955)
speaks about plant hormones, as well as her short film career and her
passion for horses. She graduated from biochemical studies at the Faculty
-
100
-
of Science, Charles University in Prague. She has spent her scientific
career at the Institute of Experimental Botany, Academy of Sciences of
the Czech Republic, focusing on biochemical processes in plants. Her
attention was caught by auxin, a plant hormone, the main regulator of
plant growth. It forms the embryo in the seed as well as organs in
mature plants. The complexity of the issue required a focus only on
a small cross-section of the process, by which the auxin works in the
plant. For many years, an international team of scientists - also involving
a group led by Eva Zazimalova - monitored how the movement of
auxin is controlled in a plant, and how levels in plant cell are regulated.
The team made a breakthrough discovery of a previously unknown
group of proteins in cells that control the levels of auxin - these are
important for the growth and development of roots, stems and flower
formation. Zazimalova was the director of the Institute of Experimental
Botany in 2007-2012. She is currently a head of Laboratory of hormonal
regulations in plants.
