Summary
This five-part volume H om ines scientiarum I-V: Thirty Stories o f Czech
Science and Philosophy is an accompanying yet independent publication
th at presents edited interviews with select Czech scientists and
philosophers, including biographical details about them . It supplements
thirty short films produced by the University of Pardubice (Department
of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts and Philosophy) in collaboration with the
Institute of Contemporary History, Academy of Sciences of the Czech
Republic (Centre for the History of Sciences and Humanities). This
publication and the short films were produced as a part of the project
Idea o f University.
By idea of university we mean a broadly considered idea of unity
of knowledge and the com m on ground for various scientific fields.
Scientists and philosophers have been selected to com m ent on many
fields of human knowledge, ranging from philosophy, chem istry,
biology, physics, medicine, mathematics and electrotechnics to history,
anthropology and theology. The rationale behind this selection is not to
cover every scientific field — in only thirty films and chapters this would
be hardly possible — but to highlight the extent of variety within the main
three focus points: philosophy, chemistry and biology. These fields are
typical by interdisciplinary overlap with other fields, and by comparing
various personalities of diverse temperament, experience, generation,
confession and expertise, we can present the discipline more fully,
and thus make the spectator or reader realize how endlessly colourful
science and philosophy actually is, and even how the history of science
and philosophy is created from personal approaches, interests and
choices of individuals. Although all of the people discussed in this
volum e are experts in their specialized sub-fields, they all share the
highest regard for other fields, and stress the importance of education
in culture, and they also appreciate interdisciplinarity. This insight
into unique personal views was made possible by the oral history
m ethod. Apart from these individual traces of the history of science,
several common themes stick out throughout these testimonies: Czech
history, the suppression of the Nazi and Communist régimes, exile, and
politically motivated distortions of scientific theories. The publication
and film series is primarily addressed to university students of all levels,
but also to high school students and teachers.
* * *
The second part of the publication series presents personalities from
the field of humanities and social sciences. Anthropologist and
physician Dr. Ales Hrdliika (1869-1943), who became famous with
his theory of one origin of humankind and the human settlements
of America from Asia. We interviewed Dr. Marco Stella, curator of the
Hrdlicka’s Museum of Man in Prague. Hrdlkika was born in Humpolec
but as a young boy, he left for the United States. He studied medicine
in New York and Baltimore, and then became fully devoted to physical
anthropology - he is considered a founder of this field in the US.
He undertook a few spectacular anthropological expeditions, which
allowed him to amass an extensive collection material. He founded the
Anthropological Department at American Museum of Natural History in
New York. After the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia,
he became a great promoter and supporter of this establishment in
the US. He was awarded the prestigious Thomas Henry Huxley Award
in 1927.
The next portrait introduces biologist and philosopher, Prof. Emanuel
Radi (1873-1942). The significance of his work and public activity is
mediated through the descendants of his close colleague, Jaroslav Simsa
(1900-1945). Radi graduated from the University of Prague, Faculty of
Science. He started his career as an experimental zoologist and only
then he became an internationally recognized historian of biological
theories. As a representative of Masarykian-oriented philosophy, he
emphasized the embattled efforts to contribute to solving current
problems. After a serious illness in 1935, he remained in isolation.
There he writes a late work that is of contemplative and comforting
nature. As a leading figure of the Academic YMCA (Christian youth
association), he influenced a generation of young people, particularly in
the rising resistance to Nazism. One of them was Jaroslav Simsa, who
- 256 -
was actively involved in the resistance movement and died in Dachau
concentration camp. Theologian Jan Simsa, archivist Milena Simsova
and political philosopher Martin Simsa talk about Emanuel Radi and
his influence on their family.
Economist, first Czechoslovak Finance Minister and former Governor
of the National Bank, Prof. Karel Engli§ (1 8 8 0 -1 9 6 1 ), was the main
preoccupation of economist Prof. Lubomir Mlcoch (1944), influenced
by Christian social ethics. Lubomir Ml£och and historian Zdendk Pousta
introduce Englis as a well-known Czech economist and politician, and
a representative of teleological economics and philosophy. He participated
in monetary reform of postwar Czechoslovakia. He served as a Finance
Minister in the years 1920-1931, and then in the period 1934-1938 as
governor of the National Bank of Czechoslovakia (the country s central
bank). He is the author of dozens of scientific writings, manuals and
textbooks. He was the first rector of Masaryk University in Brno
(1919-1920) and the last freely elected rector of Charles University in
Prague before the Communist takeover. For political reasons, since 1952
he was forced to leave Prague and stay in Hrabyne.
The Renaissance personality Dr. Zdenek Horsky (1929-1988), historian
of science, is discussed by astrophysicist and astronomer Dr. Jin Grygar.
Zdengk Horsky studied philosophy and musicology, but he was also
a student of astronomy and mathematics. Bridging the humanities and
exact sciences characterized his professional career as a historian
of astronomy. In the 1960s he was involved in shaping the history of
science, where he became an internationally recognized authority. His
main scholarly interest was Renaissance cosmology, the relationship
between the natural sciences and philosophy, the work of Nicolaus
Copernicus, and astronomy at the court of Rudolf IInd, represented
by J. Kepler, Tycho Brahe and Tadeas Hajek of Hajek. He made many
original discoveries, he reinterpreted Prague astronomical sights, and
he excelled as a popularizer of the history of science.
The next chapter is devoted to the most important Czech philosopher,
Prof. Jan Patocka (1907-1977). He is introduced by professor Renaud
Barbaras from the Sorbonne University and his Czech PhD student
Eliska Luhanova. Jan Patocka s life and work are closely linked with
the crises experienced by the Czech and European society in the
- -2S7
2 0 th century, and also with the changes within the movement of
phenomenological philosophy. Patocka can be understood as a current
thinker in contemporary philosophy, specifically in the context of
post-phenomenological research in France. In the long run, the part
of Patodka’s work that remained a naked torso, can be considered the
most vivid and inspiring. Philosophy thus appears as an open field of
thought, between traditions and experimentation with new thought.
For his outstanding contribution to philosophy and Czech society, Jan
Patoika was posthumously awarded the Order of T. G. Masaryk in 1991.
This volume concludes with a portrait of a psychologist, philosopher,
journalist and translator, Dr. JiffNemec (1932-2001), who inspired many
book translations, editions and other initiatives. The publisher Robert
Krumphanzl speaks the importance of his work for the cultural and
spiritual renewal of Czech society. Krumphanzl has been preparing an
annotated edition of Nemec s extensive notebooks. Jiff Nemec studied
clinical psychology at Charles University in Prague and then worked
as a phoniatrist. His publications, lecturing and publishing activities,
whcih were oriented towards an active Christian life in society, had
a significant impact, especially in the 1960s and early 1970s. He
inspired many translations and editions, mainly Christian authors,
and several initiatives made a significant contribution to cultural and
spiritual renewal. He was one of the main initiators of Charter 77 and
the Committee for the Defense of the Unjustly Prosecuted (VONS). In
1979, he was imprisoned for seven months, and in 1983 he went into
exile in Vienna under pressure from the Czech communist secret police
(StB). In Vienna, he participated in the publication of the writings of Jan
Patoika. He was awarded the Medal of Merit in 2002 - in m emoriam.
