Summary
Problems of violent conflicts taking place outside homes, hidden from by-
standers, are not new in the Czech sociology: Since 1989 these problems have
been studied not only by professionals from the social and legal sciences, but
also NGOs set up to help victims of intimate violence and media. Researchers
and authors of these areas draw on various more or less relevant and relia-
ble data resources, which sometimes lead to ambiguous results and ambiva-
lent conclusions. This book is trying to get a more qualified insight into the
problems studied, particularly through looking at the sociological aspects of
violence in intimate partnership.
The book draws on vast data resources including foreign ones based on
representative sociological research, both current (2013) and older, to draw
a parallel with the situation about ten years ago. Its aim is to familiarize the
reader with basic information and circumstances on partner violence against
women - this means the authors had to make a broadly conceived study of
the subject, mainly from the point of view of its occurrence and distribu-
tion in society, its impact on individuals and organizations. Another objec-
tive is also to get to know the roots of violence between men and women and
broader context of these sociological phenomena.
The research methodology of intimate partnership violence (2013),
which provides the book with most data, is based upon the International vi-
olence against women survey (2003). Moreover, other subjects are also dealt
with which are studied elsewhere in separate texts and publications (violence
against men, stalking).
The primary aspect studied in partner violence is physical aggression. The
research has confirmed the previously known fact that the risk of women be-
ing attacked is markedly higher inside the own family, or by their own part-
ners, as compared with situation where the aggressor is an acquaintance,
for example a friend or a colleague from work. This applies to both light vi-
olence forms (threat, throw/hit with something, push) and more serious
ones (slap, fist hit) and also to hard attacks (strangle, knife). Sexual violence
is a specific act of violence where lighter forms like petting are more likely

in extramarital relations. On the contrary, more serious forms of sexual vi-
olence (forced sex) do not follow this trend, with women mostly reporting
their family partners.
Our analyses have confirmed a strong influence of family load on victim-
ization risk in adulthood, which was also identified in many other sociolog-
ical studies. The data clearly demonstrated that experience of childhood and
adolescence is closely connected with future risks of becoming a victim dur-
ing the partnership cohabitation. These experiences have very wide scope as
they cover not only direct experiences with aggressive behaviour of Father
towards Mother or against oneself, but include much broader psycho-social
characteristics regarding the family environment - for instance a parents'di-
vorce or perception and evaluation of relationships within the family. Sim-
ilarly as in case of violent partners, the men who in childhood witnessed
violent behaviour between their parents, would be more likely aggressive
towards their female partners in adulthood. Also men, who grew up in sin-
gle-parent families represent the'Tisky group" from the point of view of ag-
gressive behaviour towards their partners. The influence of negative experi-
ence on later higher incidence of violence may reflect "observed" behavioural
patterns from the family background and often psychological barriers in
terms of lower demands on partner, lack of self-confidence, psychological
problems and the like.
Through regression analysis the authors tried to identify those factors
that are essential from the point of view of the emergence of risks. In this
connection not individual demographical or socio-economic characteristics
(age, education, socio-economic status) have been proved decisive, but those
relating to the lifestyle and some social characteristics of the family. Alco-
hol among the partners and their female respondents, drug and total aggres-
sive orientation of the individual, or the aggressive way of conflict solution
(e.g. aggressivity in public) have emerged as the main actuator in assessing
potential conflict risks. To these phenomena are then added socio-economic
context such as bad financial stuation of the family (household low income).
Runners-up key factors are negative experiences from background families,
praticularly in the case of the male partner.
The authors also looked at the perception of and reaction to violent be-
haviour. The results demonstrate that most of the women interviewed as-
sessed their partners' last violent act as serious or rather serious and this
assessment corresponded to the objective nature of the act given by the in-
jury involved. But there was a tendency to downplay the legal qualification of
the act, with mere sixth female victims having felt it as a criminal act. Most
women took it as something that just happens. The reluctance to admit that

the partner's behaviur might be of criminal nature largely occurs even in
very severe cases. That may be a reason why the victims do not like to contact
the police - in the case of the last incident there is only 11 percent to do so.
An important area researchers are often focusing on is psychological vi-
olence against women. The problem of psychological violence lies in its am-
biguous interpretations. The authors identify it as that sort of behaviour
whose primaiy motivation is to gain control and power over the partner. The
research results show physiological violence to be a very widespread phe-
nomenon which concerns a large part of women. Most of them experience it
at least occasionally, with roughly sixth of them reporting one of its forms
as frequent. The most current form of psychological violence is an excessive
tendency to control behaviour of the partner, such as various kinds of jealusy
or efforts to be constantly informed on her activities. A high intensity of psy-
chological violence appeared also in women who experienced physical vio-
lence. On the other hand, various forms of psychological violence are com-
mon in relationships that are not affected by physical violence.
In the final part the authors deal with a topic which combines in an in-
teresting way sociological aspects and a psychological view, i.e. the partners
configuration with regard to the incidence of various forms of violence. The
investigation also included a number of questions aimed at explaining the
intimate partnership violence as depended upon the partner inclination to
deliquency. The partner self-control turned out to be a significant factor in
partners configuration. The partner’s low self-control presents a threat and
becomes a partial predictor for abuse and violent behaviour.
The study is wrapped up with a review evaluating violence against
women in intimate partnership in a time perspective, with the authors com-
paring the actual results with those from the international research IWACVS
ten years ago.
