adam_text | Out in the Cumbrian hillside, young Bell Teesdale and Harry Bateman have become friends, despite their differences: the Bateman family is from London, and in the summers they rent a house on farmland owned by the Teesdales. Together they explore the countryside (or the “Hollòw Land” as locals know it), meeting delightful characters along the way, such as the Egg Witch, Granny Crack, and the Household Word. Danger comes in many forms for the two boys—sometimes they seek it, and sometimes it arrives from out of town. First published in 1981, The Hollow Land won the Whitbread (now Costa) Book Prize. Told with the same effortless authenticity and subtle humor as her celebrated masterpiece, the Old Filth trilogy, these remarkable stories richly depict not just the mischievous adventures of two boys, but also the shifting nature of the small country town where they live, the constant tensions between city and country, and the struggle to sustain a community and way of life for the next generation. The Hollow Land is another welcome addition to Gardam’s steadily growing and consistently artful oeuvre.
