This thoroughly revised second edition updates and widens the perspective of
interactions and interdependencies among forests, forestry and their environment
as dynamic ecosystems. Current conditions and trends in science, technology,
economics, law, society and politics concerning tropical rainforests are critically
reviewed with respect to integrated conservation, management, utilisation and
development. Major causes of decline and deterioration of forests, forestry, habitat
and society are identified. Basic unifying phenomena that regulate processes
and dynamics within and among natural and cultural ecosystems, and their
intrinsic uncertainties and performance risks, are discussed. This is fundamental
information for long-term planning of goals and methods of forestry in pristine
forests, customarily manipulated natural forest and traditionally nature-mimicking
close-to-nature forests. The roles of anthropogenic social, economic and political
ecosystems are discussed. Causal factors for the current rapid decline of forests
and forestry in the tropics are positioned in the framework of anthropogenic
social, economic, financial, judicial and political ecosystems, including organised
crime networks, common deception, obsolete economic and legal doctrines, and
unsuitable, unadaptive policies. Incentive schemes, such as biofuel production,
REDD+, emission credit trading and nature protection for pay are discussed,
highlighted with recent failures to fulfil. Throughout the book, the holistic and critical
approaches of World Forestry are applied. The knowledge and understanding
gained by the author in over 60 years of involvement in tropical and temperate
forestry will give useful guidance to those concerned with the problems of forest
policy and sustainable forest management, and development in a coming post-
fossil fuel era of social and ecological adaptation.
