This book uncovers one of the great hidden sagas of modern literature.
During the Fascist period in Italy, Eugenio Montale, the most signif-
icant Italian poet of the twentieth century and a future Nobel laure-
ate, fell in love with Irma Brandeis, a brilliant young Jewish American
Dante scholar. Their romance came to an end after five years, but its lit-
erary echoes were profound. Throughout his career, and in some of his
greatest poetry, Montale's works abound with secret codes that speak
to a lost lover and muse.
There were good reasons for such secrecy Montale's publisher,
Piero Gobetti, was beaten to death by the Fascists. In 1938, following
the enactment of anti-Semitic laws in Italy and just before the outbreak
of the Second World War, Brandeis risked returning to Florence to try
- unsuccessfully - to persuade Montale to leave his homeland. She
returned to America, never to see him again.
Montale's poems, written in an evocative hermetic style, are ex-
plored here within their rich biographical and historical context, made
possible through recently published archival materials. Offering fresh
translations and readings, this book brings to life the intersecting
mythology of some of Montale's most important poems and reveals a
major thematic link in his life and work.
