Summary
The book “Ways of Czech Historical Reasoning towards Structuralism” aspires to introdu-
ce the reflections of historical reality chiefly of social, economic and cultural character
in the interwar writings on history. The introductory theoretical study discusses appro-
aches which enabled the individual researches to deal with structures of historical facts
and processes and to capture consequences and significances for historical development.
Those presented approaches up to certain extent approximate structural understanding
of the analysed phenomena. Although structuralism was applied predominantly in Czech
linguistics, literary criticism and philosophy, it is indisputable that it also turned out to
become a breeding ground for new ways of Czech historical reasoning leading out of the
period scholarly crisis.
With respect to the fact that the book in some ways completes my previous research -
or more precisely, since it is just one of the intended results, as I have published some par-
tial articles and papers on this topic and a project financially supported by the Czech Sci-
ence Foundation enabled me to conceive the monograph Structuralism in Czech Historical
Reasoning, I decided to construct the opening study as an introduction only into those
moments of the discussed problems which according to my opinion appear to be the very
fundamental ones. My objective was to capture and define the individual structural in-
spirations, to interpret them through the ideas of the outstanding and influential opini-
on-makers of Czech historiography, to display the various reflections of structuralism in
their concepts of historical reality and to depict their ability to master structuralism as
the theoretical tool as well as to broaden the scope of its application.
The book includes texts by Jan Slavik, Inocenc Arnost Blaha, Josef Ludvik Fischer, Fran-
tisek Kutnar, Jan Mukarovsky and Zdenek Kalista, all of them arranged in chronological
order according to their origin. Each of them features at least a certain amount of structu-
ral approach towards the discussed and interpreted facts. Their selection was influenced
by my effort to capture the topic of structuralism and Czech historical reasoning in a broa-
der context, i.e. to intentionally cross the boundary of historiography and at the same

time not to slavishly insist on a strict structural definition. On the one hand, my objecti-
ve was to demonstrate the often blurred boundary dividing the approaches of historio-
graphy, sociology, philosophy and also linguistics and literary criticism and on the other
hand to draw attention to the fact that although some authors did not yet advisedly apply
the structural approach, their opinions, observations and interpretations draw them to-
wards structuralism, even though it is necessary to admit that they never reached it. Thus,
the reader can easily compare texts by Jan Slavik, deliberating over the structure of the
historical notion, and by Zdenék Kalista, dealing with the spiritual structure of the epoch,
i.e. texts in which structuralism echoes only from a considerable distance and can be de-
tected and heard only by knowledgeable experts. Furthermore, one can find texts by Ino-
cenc Arnost Bláha, gradually reaching the structural interpretation of some problems, as
well as writings by Jan Mukarovsky and Josef Fiser, reflecting the structural approach as
an apparent and frequently also as overtly articulated standpoint for interpretation, and
finally by Frantisek Kutnar, probably the only Czech historian who was applying structu-
ralism consistently and who was capable to clarify and explain its interconnection with
the traditional causal-generic approach.
I perceive structuralism in the context of Czech historical reasoning and historiogra-
phy as one of the possible approaches towards the historical reality. Despite the intensity
of my long-standing engagement in the field of research into structuralism, I impartially
consider this way of historical reasoning as one of the possibilities the historian may fol-
low. More to that, I regard this approach to be extraordinarily efficient and up to a great
extent also enchanting for it enables us to disclose the array existing through history, of-
course not invariable one. Structuralism also makes it possible to find the many connec-
tions and links which might stay eclipsed by external reality and which could not emerge
in their genuine meaning or could even be missed out. Bearing in mind all those aspects,
I am convinced that structuralism, disregarding the fact it never became the determining
stream in Czech historical reasoning and Czech historiography, is apparently worth of our
attention and further discoveries. We may justly expect new inspiratory stimuli and solu-
tions of new tasks in historical research.
