Summary
Contributors of the book developed a methodology for investigating the study
of religion in the USSR. In their opinion, this methodology is more consistent
with the specifics of the subject matter than approaches adopted hitherto, which
are based on the apparatus of the history of science understood as the history of
individuals and ideas. Investigations in this book rely on Foucaultian discourse
analysis, Lakatosian model of the «scientific research programs», institutional,
scientometric analysis, and a set of different approaches within the sociology of
science (Robert Merton, Randall Collins).
As a result, a comprehensive picture of the history of studying religion in
the USSR in the 20th — 21st centuries is created. First, a gap between Soviet and
post-Soviet scientific traditions is shown and therefore, the question of transfor-
mation arises. The book also demonstrates specificity of the Soviet «Scientific
Atheism». Study of religion underwent a fundamental transformation from «nor-
mal» to «extreme» types of science during the transition from pre-revolutionary
to post-revolutionary periods. The level of scholar culture declined dramatically,
which affected academic debates, methodology and the existential involvement
of scholars in the study and thus the results obtained. Destructive features typical
for the Soviet study of religion include: 1) theoretical justification of destruction
of the subject in question, i. e. religion; 2) nihilistic attitude to the history of
the study of religion; 3) extreme narrowness of a theoretical horizon and aggres-
sive opposition to any attempt to expand it; 4) aggressive and destructive tone
of debates. These features are accounted for not only by certain ideas within the
Soviet study of religion, but also by how the ideological core (Marxist atheism) is
related to research methodology. Specific ties of the religious studies with atheist
propaganda and atheistic upbringing are also of great importance.
The methodological problems are considered in the Preface to the book.
The book consists of two parts. The first part includes the studies applying
the new approaches (that were described above) to the Soviet study of religion.
It begins with two general surveys of the Soviet religious studies. The first (From
Pre-Revolutionary Study of Religion to the Soviet Religious Studies: a destiny of the
System of Scientific Research Programs and Formation of the Soviet Discourse on
254
Religion by Konstantin Antonov) uses the concept of scientific research programs
of Imre Lakatos and the methods of Foucauldian discourse analysis. The author
reviews the transformation of the way religion was dealt with from 1910 until the
beginning of the 1930s. The research programs of the study of religion used in
pre-revolutionary Russia are described. The forgoing analysis permits the author
to conclude that the Soviet approach to religion represents in no way a develop-
ment but rather a complete break with pre-revolutionary studies of religion and
must be treated as a specific phenomenon. Neither can the Soviet approach,
judging by its basic principles, be considered as a normal scientific research pro-
gram. Rather, it was a system conditioned by external factors which clearly took
precedence over internal ones to the detriment of any objective study of religion.
The second survey (Ethos of the Soviet Study of Religion by Konstantin Antonov)
relies on the concept of «ethos of science» developed by Robert Merton and ideas
of M. Weber and K.-0. Apel. The ethos of the Soviet study of religion in the period
of the 1920s — 1980s is reconstructed. The following basic elements of the ethos
of Soviet «scientific atheism» are analyzed: the value of knowledge and tradition
of the study of religion, the treatment of «academism», and the attitude towards
society and power. Special attention is paid to the question of the responsibility
of the scholars for religious persecution in the USSR. The survey argues that the
particular feature of the Soviet discourse on religion consists of its special ethical
component, rather than of the approaches or ideas. The efficacy of this ethos does
not depend on the scholars that share it. In the 1920s - 1930s the systematic cor-
ruption of the set of moral principles took place. Later, in the 1950s — 1970s this
«corrupted moral» was taken for granted in the Soviet studies of religion.
The institutional history of the Soviet study of religion is presented by the
subsequent investigation (Religious Studies in Moscow State University in the First
Half of the 20th Century by Pavel Kostylev). Its main interest is the institutional
development of scientific research of the religion in Moscow State University
which took place after the Chairs of the History of Religions were founded in
Russian higher schools in the first half of the 20th century. The author analyzes
the reception of Western experience in religious studies by Russian scholars from
the very beginning of the 20th century. He describes and studies academic subjects
and initiatives concerned with the scientific research into religious studies which
were undertaken at several faculties of Moscow State University and some other
institutions. The acute need for studies of religion, especially its «primordial»
history, gave rise to the foundation of several Chairs of History of Religion in
Moscow University as well as outside it. The author states that religious studies
in Russia being in progress before 1917-1918 (and developing till the 1920s) had
gone down in the Soviet studies proper. In the second quarter of the 20th century
255
one could notice a decline of interest in religious studies. There was no way of
studying religion before the 1950s in the USSR because of the following two fac-
tors: 1) tough ideological censorship in high education; 2) religious persecution.
The sociological approach is applied to the history of Religious Studies in
the Soviet Union in the study «Sociology of the Soviet Study of Religion: the
Collins’ Method» by Ksenia Kolkunova. The Randall Collins’ approach to the
history of philosophy is applied to the history of the Soviet religious studies. The
author considers some problems of the applicability of this approach to her sub-
ject. It is probably, that «academization» and «stagnation» (in terms of Collins)
of the Soviet study of religion took place at the 1950s — 1970s.
The four chapters described above constitute the first part of the book. Its
second part consists of several case studies concerning some particular concepts,
persons and ideas. The first two of them are conducted using the traditional
method of the history of ideas.
One of them is devoted to the problem of sect studies in the Soviet Union
(Sect Studies in the USSR: Terminology and Approaches by Roman Safronov). The
Soviet tradition in this field did not appear from the thin air but was a «dialectic»
(in terms of Hegel) sequel of pre-Soviet sect-study approach. The Soviet tradi-
tion perse is based on ambiguous, according to Lenin’s position, understanding
of sectarianism as an example of class combat (positive dimension), but at the
same time religiously manifested (negative dimension). This negative attitude
was expressed in specific ideological and political position towards sectarianism.
Stating this position was a priority. That is why the establishing of proper Soviet
scientific approach was problematic. It began to form only in the 1960s. The term
«sect» for both pre-Soviet and Soviet researchers had negative connotation in
dogmatic way for the former and in ideological way for the latter.
The other study (The Second Vatican Council and the Social Doctrine of the
Roman Catholic Church through the Eyes of the Soviet Scholars of Religion by Ta-
tiana Folieva) concerns the way Soviet experts in religious studies understood
and explained the Second Vatican Council, especially its decisions relating to
and its influence on the social doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church. Soviet
reception of the changes within the Roman Catholic Church was determined
by the role which was ascribed to the Church by the Soviet ideology. The
Church was considered as an inspirer of the Western capitalist society. Thus,
official research in the Soviet Union was limited to investigating the questions
raised at the Council which were estimated to be useful for Soviet ideological
struggle. As a result, Soviet researchers from the 1960s to the 1980s touched
upon several key problems inherent in the decisions of the Council as well as in
Catholic social doctrine: the transformation of the Church’s position towards
256
society, solidarity, etc. Although the work of Soviet researchers was determined
by their Marxist ideological outlook, the results of their investigation are still
of interest.
The next two investigations are devoted to the problem of reception of some
important Western concepts. The first analyzes the destiny of the Durkhemian
ideas (Durkheimian Theory of Religion in the Soviet Study of Religion: Reception
and (Mis) Understandingby Roman Safronov). There is no doubt that Durkheim’s
approach was well known in the Soviet social science. So, if by «reception» we
mean knowledge about the theory, then, of course, such a reception took place.
Nevertheless, the process of reception was not very smooth. Sometimes merely
describing the Durkheimian approach, Soviet authors express conflicting judg-
ments about it. For example, Durkheim is described as a positivist, idealist,
empiricist, rationalist and even the psychologist at the same time.
The reason for this lack of uniformity in opinions is the fact that the recep-
tion of Durkheim’s theory in the Soviet Union passed through the prism of ide-
ology and relations between “right” Marxists and «wrong» bourgeois theorists.
Soviet scholars of religion, claiming to possess the only true scientific methodol-
ogy referred to the works of Durkheim only to illustrate why Marxism is right
and bourgeois science is not. That is why the Durkheimian theory itself was not
interesting to researchers in the USSR.
All the aforesaid explains a very modest number of published works in the Soviet
Union about Durkheim and unequivocal rejection of Durkheimian methodology. So,
if by «reception» we mean the use of methodology for empirical research and theory
testing, then in the Soviet study of religion this kind of reception did not happen.
The second study traces the reception history of the ideas of Wilhelm Schmidt,
especially of his concept of primeval monotheism (Wilhelm Schmidfs Ideas in the
Russian Study of Religion: Polemics, Apologia and Reception by Konstantin Antonov).
Schmidt’s impressive attempt to do both Christian apologetics and empirical sci-
ence in the field of ethnology and religious studies generated a broad discussion
concerning the limits of science, role of presuppositions in scientific knowledge, the
problem of evolutionism and so on. The article examines the Russian branch of that
discussion. First of all it describes Schmidt’s main ideas, which became a topic of
discussion in Russian science, then — main historical antecedents of their perception
and reactions to it in the pre-revolutionary period. After that the author’s attention
concentrates on the main tendencies in the controversy around these ideas in the
1920s - 1930s, 1950s - 1970s and 1990s - 2000.
The sequent two chapters pretend to analyze the complicate relationship be-
tween theory and practice of the Soviet atheism, namely between the «scientific
atheism» and «atheist propaganda» and «atheistic upbringing».
257
The first (Atheistic Propaganda in Fiction of1950—1960s by Ksenia Kolkunova)
deals with antireligious campaign of the 1950—1960s as reflected in fiction and
school literature curriculum. This period is interesting because it was exactly the
time when scientific atheism and Soviet study of religion came to existence. But as
long as it was growing, in fact it had a very little impact on propaganda yet. In the
research two hypotheses are to be proved: 1) to succeed among young generation,
atheistic propaganda was to be supported by new fiction containing atheistic ideas;
2) campaign against religion must be reflected in school teaching. The investiga-
tion analyzes main motives and subjects of atheistic fiction created in the 1960s.
The second investigation (Interpretation of Religious Socialization and Reli-
gious Education by the Soviet Religious Studies Scholars by Tatiana Folieva) ana-
lyzes the work of the Soviet scholars of religion, in which the following topics were
treated: 1) the renewal of the religious sphere; 2) religious family; 3) religious
socialization; and 4) religious education. The use of projective techniques, the
question of the mechanism of imitation in learning, socialization periodization
depending on cognitive development, the problem of «neutral» (non-religious)
family, secondary religious socialization and religious education of young
people — the main issues that are constantly raised by Soviet scholars. These
developments may be relevant and important to contemporary researchers.
The book is concluded by two bibliographic surveys. The first of them {Study
of Religion in Russia (2000—2013). A Review of Publications by Elena Vorontsova)
presents a panoramic view of publications which appeared in the field of religious
studies in Russia from 2000 to 2013. The material is divided into the following
categories: the history and the methodology of religious studies, the philosophy
of religion, the sociology of religion, the psychology of religion, and the phe-
nomenology of religion (publications dealing with the history of religion were not
taken into account). This bibliographical collection may serve as an important
incentive for further analysis of the contemporary content of and perspectives for
religious studies as an academic discipline in Russia.
The annotated bibliography of the Soviet scholar literature (written in Rus-
sian) on the history and theory of the religious studies (by Alexander Koltsov)
might be helpful for the further investigations in the field.
The Soviet «Scientific Atheism» not only described religiosity, but also con-
structed it. The present analysis of religious studies in Russia by periods proves
that the basic structure of the «Scientific Atheism» persists, though its content may
be changed (e. g. into religious one), it still affects the studies and it is especially
harmful to science as well as to the religious situation in contemporary Russia.
