MYKHAILO KHAI. MYKOLA BUDNYK AND KOBZARDOM
The rise and fall of social changes which occur in nature, directly affects us — the native carriers of folk psychology, culture and, more broadly, mentality-factors that, in fact, distinguish one nation from another defining their greatness or smallness in comparison. The greatness of some — Imperial types — always rested on force of arms, coarse brutality, rudeness, lie and arrogance, and compared with others — enslaved — who were based on strength of spirit, intellect, culture, truth, sincerity and love... Accordingly, the struggle between the forces of good and evil lies in the antinomy of these two opposed planes and weapons which are also appropriately used...
One of the most remarkable knights in the kingdom of Spirit — an unforgettable patriarch of Ukrainian bandurists, husla and hurdy-gurdy players — Mykola Budnyk — not coincidentally chose for himself (and at the same time for us) this physically most unprotectable, but spiritually powerful weapon which tactically played in the straight fight of Ham and Shem, strategically always overcame the first one with the power of God s Word and a sonorous bandura. Having died a decade shy of the time when the struggle for dignity and spirit trumped the revolutionary prerogative over weapons of brute force, he left us an arsenal of weapons for an uphill battle against the insane to overcome the spiritual helplessness of the enraged enemy...
An inquisitive reader will find in the book many difficulties and contradictions through which the author discussed with Budnyk and his entourage where he had to move towards the comprehension of truth about kobzardom and the sanctuary of dignity and spirit that each of us must overcome alone with God and himself. It was not easy to wallow in that quagmire of lie and thick muck that the system of the kingdom of evil methodically used for centuries to withhold the truth about our nation and its culture being aware of danger to itself. It proceed in the same way convulsively by means of an ossified state system filling it with quasi-kobzar educational institutions and concert practice... Budnyk was physically broken by this world prematurely. However, it did not have the power to break Budnyks spirit, his strength of truth and purpose in his life.

An important factor of the discourse concerning the current state of scientific reconstruction of the kobzar movement with regard to Mykola Budnyk’s original views is that this book is the first one, but it is by no means non-engaged «objective science» being free from subjectively biased and opinionated interpretations of complex issues of the history and theory of kobza and hurdy-gurdy playing and especially the hypothesis of genesis and evolution of Tkachenko-Budnyk. Critics of this view and phantasmagoric old Soviet opinion around the study of kob-zardom are numerous, and attempts at scientific hermeneutics of all the mirror opposites and distortions of this discourse are exposed here for the first time. This, in turn, means that after the publication of this research with the new interpretations of Budnyks postulates, kobzardom will receive a new impetus for debate.
The author does not claim an absolute truth in reporting the scientific interpretation of all the scientific issues and facts expressed, their ratings and other interpretations by Budnyk, but I hope that the book will qualify the most commonality with his views of kobzardom as a phenomenon of our anxious history and culture the main essence of which was to dive as deeply as possible into its origins of artistic and stylistic nature. However, it certainly does not preclude other interpretations of both the multidimensional and no less contradictory phenomena — Budnyk and kobzardom.
Questions raised in the book, I hope, will encourage the Kyiv and Irpin communities and a wide circle of admirers of life exploits of the famous companion of the kobzar to work systematically on its invaluable heritage. If in Kyiv a permanent refuge for the Kyiv kobza guild is problematic, then what is viable is the idea of transferring it from Budnyk’s «Kobza-room» in Ukrainian House in European Square again to Irpin where his spirit soared high above the heavens and there just dropped to the ground and slept. For us all of this becomes a matter of respect and gratitude to him for the happiness and joy of participation and co-existence in this highly complicated and disturbing yet beautiful world.
Mykola was not only an ardent fighter at the ideological front. Throughout all his life, his way of thinking and actions set an example of such wealth and power that the rank of his successors will overcome more than one column of riot police and heal the wounds of many future generations of freedom fighters of our dear Motherland. This force has shown itself at all fronts of our sacred struggle — on the stage and in the premises of the Maidan, in military units and hospitals at the front and rear. The dynamics of its cumulative development argues that its potential is growing and will continue to grow insomuch that the enemy will never destroy this spirit on our land... and it will cherish every day and every moment the confidence between the people and this Spirit — the Spirit of Budnyk the awakener, Budnyk the fighter, Budnyk the man and Budnyk — «the man of God».
