SUICIDES IN YUGOSLAVIA
- Summary -
This study based on statistical data concerning suicides in the period 1950-
1985, represents an analysis of the frequency suicides in Yugoslavia, in its territorial
communities and in social parts of the population.
Movements in the post-war period, increase in number of suicides, suicide
rates and share of the suicides in the total number of deceased, follow general
european trends of permanent increase. This results from the changes in general
conditions where a suicide is committed, growth of population, ageing of population
and augmentation of suicide risks and suicide behaviours. Therefore, a considerable
part of the increasing number of suicides is related with chages in demographis
fremework where they occur, and thus a real growth of suicide behaviours is less
than it appears at the first sight.
Yugoslav territory could be divided in three zones acciording to the frequently
of suicides. The north zone comprises Slovenia, north half of Croatia and the
Provice of Vojvodina and is characterized by the highest rates of suicides, while
the south zone, with the lowest rates, includes the Privince of Kosovo and west
Macedonia. The space between the two encompasses the central zone with moderate
rates of suicides. This division is in conformity with european division to suicide
zones, where the rates are the highest in the central region which includes, among
others, the north Yugoslav zone, and the lowest in the south part which includes,
among others, the south Yugoslav zone.
A considerable part of differences on the level of suicides in relation with
particular regions of the country is connected with differences in those features
of the society which are related to suicide: characteristics of family and marriage,
standard of living, age structure, indicators of psychological climate and, particularly,
ethno-cultural structure of the population. In this respect, each region of the
country is specific, so the frequency of suicides is connected with respective specific
characteristics and even represents, by itself, an important characteristic of social,
cultural and psychological entirety of the society.
When examining social characteristics of the suicides, there are noted certain
general relations, but also some connections which deviate from these relations.
Marriage and family are related with suicide in Yugoslavia in the same way
as in the other european countries which means that voluntary abandon of life
is much tnore frequent at those who live out of marriage and family.
However, when connections between suicide and indicators of position held
in the social stratification are concerned, there occur unexpected relations. In
other words, suicide is much more frequent in the lower parts of the society than
at the top of social structure, both regarding profession and education. There is
particularly important a manifestation of those differences, growing with augmen-
tation of economic level of development, which, further, means that augmentation
of the standard of living of a society does not provoke by itself augmentation of
number of suicides; it results mainly from the stratification which follows that
process. In a rich society the poors are those who commit suicide.

Ethnical groups show such a level of differences when committing suicide
is concerned, that they could be classified according to different types of behaviour,
from extremely rare to considerably frequent. A part of these differences is con-
ditionned by the differences in social features of ethnical groups, but a major part
undobtedly results from features of culture, system of values, way of living and
mentality. All researches in suicides lack psychological studies on the group level,
but this shortage is here the most outstanding.
Differences between men and women show to be the following: suicide at
women is less frequent, but their priority over men of the same age very high
where the suicides are the most frequent, a little bit less where the suicides are
the less frequent, and the less at moderate level of suicides. Moreover, here is
noted a world exception of a higher rate of suicides of women in the monténégrin
group.
Second, growth of the number of suicides at women is to the highest extent
due to demographic conditions, increase in number and ageing of the population,
while a real spread out of suicides has a minor influence. The situation is just
the opposite when the men are concerned. Therefore, the increase in suicide
behaviour in the coutry could be connected mainly with the men.
Third, social differentation of suicides among women is insignificant. That
is the case when examining suicides in relation with marital status, education (on
the general Yugosla level, while particular regions show some specific features),
nationality, activity, profession and stratum position.
It is noted that differences in prirority of women compared with men of
the same age and social characteristics grow with descending from the top to the
bottom of the strata scale. That means that rise in social position of a woman
means for her less differences in the way of living compared with other women
that is the case among men. On the other hand, within low rate of suicides at
the high parts of social structure there is noted alleviation of prirority of women
compared with men of the same age, this being a consequence of alleviated
differences in social characteristics. These two, in appearance, contradictory rela-
tions make specific connections between suicides of women, their social position
and social rise.
