SUMMARY
Several periods in the history of the appearance and evolution of a system of the land communications of the Omsk Irtysh region have been revealed.
The first period is dated to the early Iron Age (the developed Middle Ages). It is related to the formation of the routes of transit caravan trading on the basis of local land communications. We discovered them through the imported artifacts of the VI—XIII centuries, the findings of the bones of exotic transport animals (camels), the traces of the war events on the Irtysh meridian passageway. The second period of the evolution of the land communications of the region has been related to the state road construction begun in the Siberian khanate in 1560-1570. The third period has been signified by a decay of the road construction in the Omsk Irtysh region in 1580—1720, when this area became a place for the military confrontation of Russia and Kalmyk Taisha. The fourth period has been bound with the process of the Siberian road construction in 1730—1740 and the appearance in the second half of the XVIII century of the new state land communications:
the Merchant’s (Commercial) road, the road through the Baraba steppe, the road through the Abaz steppe. In this time the old trading routes (the road from the Omsk to the Ust-Kamenogorskaya fortresses, the Lineyny (Petropavlovsky) road, the road from Omsk to Kainsk) have been populated. In such a way in the second half of XVIII — beginning of XIX century the road network determining the structure of a future region road network has been composed in the Omsk Irtysh region. The fifth period consisted in the development of the located here land communications and the optimization of their components which lead to the formation in the region in the middle of XIX century of a plethoric transport system. At the end of XIX— beginning of XX century the region road network broadened due to construction of the roads to the new settlements organized by the Migratory department of the Main Land and Agriculture Management. Moreover, two branches of the Trans-Siberian railway stimulated the appearance of the new roads (the access roads to the stations) have been constructed in the Omsk Irtysh region. The freight traffic activity intensified by the Russian-Japanese war ceased soon and appeared again during the Civil war. However, exactly in that time the region transportation sector declined and it recovered only by the end of 1930.
The functioning of the system of the land communications of the Omsk Irtysh region during the considered historical period occurred on the basis of the utilization by populace of natural passages, artificial

road constructions (glades, causeways, bridges, vzvozs, fords, ferries), a road situation (road signs, stations), carriageway, roadbed. Almost all these components of the road system have been represented by the constructions traditionally used by populace as well as by the constructions developed and recommended by the state engineering service The last have been constructed on the most important strategical thoroughfares, the former operated in the remote districts.
The practical investigations of the roads of XVII-XIX centuries in the Omsk Irtysh region became possible by the use of a wide range of written, ethnographic, archaeological, graphical (uppermost cartographical) sources, the analysis of a landscape situation and the practical field surveys. We reconstructed the locations of the traditional Irtysh river crossings (XVIII—XIX centuries), the road from Tara to the Omsk fortress (XVIII century), the route of the Uguy portage (XVII century), the late medieval caravan road in the area of the Sargat and Bolsherechensky districts of the Omsk region, the route network of XVIII century in the western part of the Osha-Bolshoy Aev interfluve. An artificial character of the vzvoz remains nearby the medieval settlement Nadegdinka in the Muromzev district of the Omsk region has been proved.
The reconstruction of the communications of the Omsk Irtysh region of XVI — the first third of XX century allowed us to reveal the dynamics and peculiarities of the evolution of land communications during various periods of the historical process as well as to understand in whole the role of a road network as the system of travelling and space development in a sense of a dialectical interaction between a natural environment and a social medium.
