3. Summary
This work has resulted from an effort - relevant now, in the
year when the beginning of the Great War is being marked - to
present to the Readership a topic which has not been given
adequate attention so far: the past and present condition of the
memorials to the Serbian warriors fallen from 1912 to 1918 on
the territory of (the Former Yugoslav Republic of) Macedonia.
During the said period, Serbia suffered catastrophic devastation,
for the already moderate riches of the society were ruined and
plundered and, above all, the population was decimated, whereby
the category of men capable of military service was affected
worst. Remindful of the enormous victims ֊ military and civil
alike - there were many monuments, army memorials, museums,
churches/monasteries, cemeteries and charnel houses/
mausoleums scattered around Europe and the north of Africa.
In this book, the Author has described the many decades of
striking neglectfulness demonstrated toward the burial sites of
the Serbs in Macedonia, which indubitably testifies to the
obstruction on the part of the Macedonian regime on the one
hand, and, on the other, to the policy of the Serbian communist
leaders in socialist Yugoslavia lacking ethnic/national feeling.
Actually, the Serbian political elite distanced themselves from, to
the extent of denying, some major historical gains.
At the same time, the book presents a number of telling
examples of the Macedonian authorities, unopposed, exploiting
to the maximum their mantra about the ‘invasive mission' of the
193
Serbian army, which in consequence brought about a total
negligence for the monuments, cemeteries and mausoleums
ruined and/or sacrileged in wartime; what remained of these was
left to the 'tooth of time' or irresponsible individuals. Verification
ensued of the situation created by the Bulgarian occupation first,
followed by a deliberated attitude, superimposed on the
Macedonian people, about rivalry and not togetherness with
regard to the memories of the First Balkan War. Insistence on
entirely differing collectivities in the rememberance scheme was
supported by a ։liberation=occupation inequation. The scheme
was programmed as a crucial watershed: the favourable collective
memory among the Serbs of their liberation army was
automatically taken by the Macedonians as negative, appropriate
to invaders/occupiers, despite the fact that a number of the
natives there volunteered in the ranks of the Serbian troops and
that the Orthodox population welcomed outright and in delight
the liberators from the agelong Ottoman rule. The change in the
economic and political order in Macedonia toward the end of
the 20th century never touched the cemented
liberation-occupation’ inequation, especially in the echelons of
scholars. The negative attitude has been maintained: propaganda
has shaped an enduring opinion that the Serbian army was on
an 'invasive mission’, discarding the facts which connect the two
nations such as their common Slavic roots, similar languages,
close cultural/civilizational ties, etc.
They even go to the opposite extreme, so that the Orthodox
faith as the religious identity the Serbian and the Macedonian
peoples share in common has taken counter-productive effects:
in Macedonia’s Orthodox churches where the mortal remains of
the Serbian warriors were buried, they do not repose in peace
but in indignity, which is shameful of civilized and Christian
communities. In addition, the very facts that such historical
monuments/memorials exist are concealed, and the Serbian
visitors are transparently and tendenciously kept away from the
possibility to visit the ossuaries and crypts in the active Orthodox
churches.
Over the past few years, a positive development has been
registered in the political relations between Belgrade and Skopje,
as the two countries have entered the “EU gravity field”. The
process should be expected to include surpassing of the inter-
church dispute. Naturally, one should follow the shining
examples of cooperation among European countries, such as the
case of Germany and France. If these two states could - several
decades ago - put an end on the great historical disputes reflected
in warfares and millions of human lives lost, there can be no
reason why the Serbian and Macedonian authorities could not
take appropriate steps in order to raise the level of bilateral
relations, including an elementary respect for the buried soldiers
and their right to rest in peace with dignity. For, these two
countries have no historical burden of mutual enmity as those
great powers. There is one paradox in the issue: Macedonian
secular authorities show more understanding for the Serbian
memorials-related heritage in Macedonia than do the ecclesiastic
leaders (of the Macedonian Orthodox Church): in dribs and
drabs, they now and then enable restoration and embellishment
of some monuments, as was the case with the one at Zebrnjak
near Kumanovo. Therefore, this book can also be taken as an
appeal on the Macedonian Orthodox Church to revise their
attitude toward the Christian Serbs buried in/by the church
buildings under their administration - in order to make a
progress to surmounting this inter-Christian antagonism which
has lasted for some decades.
A large section of the book deals with the interwar colonists
in Macedonia, especially in Prilepsko Pole (‘Prilep Valley ). As
the authorities changed rather frequently in Macedonia, the
changes were correspondingly suffered by the colonists. It was
only during the first twenty years that the settlers felt some
benevolence of the regime; their status was altered dramatically
at the beginning of World War II: they were classified as ‘alien
national elements’ unwelcome on the territory of Macedonia.
Considering the degree of their suffering and victimization, one
can justifiably wonder if the Serbian interwar colonists in
195
Macedonia (and Kosovo-Metohia) were actually a special kind
of national/political hostages twice within a short period with
whose destinies ill fortunes played a cruel game. First, they were
taken hostages by the occupiers who in 1941 dismembered
Yugoslavia, exposing the colonists to killings (especially in the
neighbouring Kosovo), plunder and banishment from their
homes. For the second time, they found themselves in a similar
position when the aggressive ideology of the Communist Party
of Yugoslavia labeled them as “exponents of Greater-Serbian
anti-people regime”, which was punished by a ban on their
return to their homes (as war refugees they were redirected to
Vojvodina, Serbia’s north).
The Author undertook to make an analytical comparison -
using a number of parameters - between the condition of the
German military memorial in Prilep and the condition of the
sepulchre of the Serbian soldiers in the Church of Saints Cyril
and Methodius, in the independence-winning Republic of
Macedonia. A timeline has been established of the erection of
memorials (memorial complexes) in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia,
their maintenance/desecration(s) during World War Two, the
period of oblivion/devastation from 1944 to 2003, and a radical
turn-around in the policy of the Macedonian regime toward the
German military graveyards only - since 2003 to this day. A
friendly attitude has been displayed to the requests coming from
Germany: opportunity and aid have been provided for a renewal
of the German cemetery in Prilep which has by now grown into
the central military memorial complex dedicated to the German
soldiers fallen in either of the two world wars. The well-designed
German army memorial is perfectly maintained. Contrariwise,
there are no positive signals whatsoever, let alone any progress,
concerning the protection and restoration of the charnel houses
of the Serbian soldiers. Such a situation is inadmissible; it
challenges the stance of the Macedonian historians who argue
against the possibility to allow the devastated monuments in
memory of “the occupying Serbian and Bulgarian forces” to
undergo restoration.
196
The commitment of the Serbian political elite to the issue of
protecting/conservation of the historical/memorial complexes in
Macedonia has not deserved a positive assessment. For many
decades, the Serbian communists were displaying a self-
destructive attitude to the vital interests of their own people at
the republic’s and federal levels of politics/administration. The
Author’s criticism has not omitted the unjust indifference on the
part of the Serbian vacationers who via Macedonia swarm toward
Greece each summer, travelling hurriedly to their tourist desti-
nations.
In his studies for the book, the Author relied on the archival
material and books by both Serbian and Macedonian authors,
plus video recordings which have registered the testimonies on
incredible contrasts between the well-kept German cemetery and
the devastated memorial sepulchre in the Church of SS Cyril and
Methodius. The issues discussed in the book are supported and
enriched by concise statements of eminent scholars from the
Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Institute of
Contemporary History.
This book can be taken as a specific form of well-intentioned
appeal on Serbia’s authorities for a more responsible attitude
toward our fallen ancestors. The opposed opinions from the
cliberation=occupation’ inequation should no longer pose
barriers to an improvement in the overall relations between the
Serbian and Macedonian nations, the relations which should be
established on a sound basis and elementary mutual respect. The
improvement should include dignity for the fallen Serbian
soldiers in the same way it has been showed to the Germans; that
is how the biased political/ideological arbitration can be
eliminated, as well as the division of victims into those deserving
dignity and the undeserving ones.
