SUMMARY
THE PORTUGUESE HOUSE SILVA TAROUCA,
MAECENAS OF JOSEF MANES,
AND ITS ROLE IN THE CZECH CULTURE
The book The Portuguese House Silva Tarouca, Maecenas of Josef
Mânes, and its role in the Czech culture deals with the establishment
of the Portuguese House of Silva Tarouca in the Château Cechy
pod Kosirem, currently the Czech Republic, the ancient Kingdom
of Bohemia, specifically in the Central Moravian region not far
from the ancient capital of Moravia, Olomouc. The name of the
family Tarouca is derived from the monastery St. John of Tarouca
and the village of Tarouca in North Portugal (in the Viseu District).
The founder of the Austrian-Moravian branch of the family,
Manuel Gomes da Silva, Count of Tarouca, adopted the name Silva
Tarouca in Vienna. His father came to Vienna as the ambassador
of Portugal, before serving in London and in Utrecht, where he
signed the Treaty of Utrecht, which concluded the War of Spanish
Succession, in 1714. His son started his public career in the army
of the Prince of Savoy, and he subsequently served as a counsellor
and mentor to the Empress Marie Theresie.
In reward for his services, the Empress offered the Château Cechy
pod Kosirem and its surroundings to Manuel in 1768. His son Franz
Stephan preferred living in Vienna, but his grandson Franz Joseph
started the reconstruction of the family château. He married Marie
Leopoldine Sternberg, who came from a Czech patriotic family.
Their ^ns Bedrich (Friedrich) and August Alexander started an
important social life and contacts. Bedrich, a Catholic priest with
an interest in art and natural sciences, was one of the Czech patriot ;
leaders opposed to Austrian power, and he was a great friend of
the Czech painter Josef Mânes, who is considered to be the founder
of the Czech modem painting.
The Silva Tarouca family commissioned Mânes to paint the
portraits of their ancestors, which made it possible for him to
live comfortably. The Silva Tarouca family also offered Mânes
temporary accommodations in Cechy pod Kosirem from the
summer of 1844 until the death of the artist in 1871. The painter
stayed there for one year, and in subsequent years he returned
from time to time, using his sojourns in the château to study
folklore in the area and in surrounding regions, such as the Hanâ
region. During these visits, he made many sketches that served as
the basis for oil paintings.
Bedrich Silva Tarouca bequeathed his library and collection to
Moravian institutions; they are currently deposited in the Moravian
Regional Library of Brno, the Moravian Gallery and the Moravian
Regional Archive (Moravskâ zemskâ knihovna, Moravskâ galerie,
and Moravskÿ zemsky archiv).

One of the members of the family, Eugen Silva, established a new
branch of the family through marriage: the Silva Tarouca-Unwerth
branch, with a residence at Pohled (Frauenthal) not far from
Havlickûv Brod. Although their time there was relatively short,
Mânes produced several important works for the marriage of
Bugen Silva and Paulina Henriette Skrbensky; their portraits and
important Neo-Rococo paintings, drawings, etc.
There are many testimonies about the relations of the Silva Tarouca
family and Mânes, particularly the correspondence of Josef Mânes
with the members of the family and the family with each other,
with many details, dates and testimonies that make it possible to
reconstruct the life and the work of Josef Mânes.
The saga of the family continued with another marriage: that
of Ernest Emanuel Silva Tarouca with Antonia Nostitz-Rieneck,
a member of another important family in the country. As a result,
Ernest acquired the Prûhonice Château not far from Prague and the
Piccolomini Palace in Prague, which he converted temporarily into
an Ethnographical Museum. However, as he was more enamored
of trees, plants and flowers, he founded a nature park around the
Chateau of Prûhonice, where he imported precious dendrological
samples; today, this place has been declared a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.
Last but not least, we observe the conclusion of the family line in the
person of Father Carlos Silva Tarouca, a Jesuit priest and professor
at the papal Gregorian University in Rome. At the start of the
Second World War, he returned to the country of his ancestors,
Portugal, where he investigated its medieval history and was
accepted as a full member of the Academy of History of Portugal.
In 1945, the Château Cechy pod Kosirem was nationalized.
