African Linguistics and the Development of African Communities
La linguistique africaine et le développement des communautésafricaines
African linguistics and the development of African communities covers
pertinent contributions from the West African Linguistics Congress held at the
University of Buea, Cameroon, from the 7—9 August 2000 on the theme ‘African
Linguistics as a tool for the development of African Communities’. The papers
provide an in-depth analysis on various aspects of current discourses in African
languages. These include the development of African languages and their role
in African renaissance, the problems of African mother tongue education and
the challenges of endangerment being faced by African minority languages.
This selection deals with broad areas such as Applied Linguistics (and covers
experiments on African Language teaching, teaching models for the deaf, and
the advantage of mastering the specialty of the language learner in second
language teaching), Sociolinguistics (covering the functions and status of
Pidgin English in multilingual communities and loan adaptation strategies
in African languages) and finally, Syntax (dealing with when and why some
constituents move and accounting for different patterns of agreement in
associative constructions in different Bantu languages).
The editor, Emmanuel N. Chia (Ph.D) is Professor of Linguistics, formerly
of the University of Yaounde, now Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research
and Cooperation at the University of Buea, Cameroon. He has published
extensively in international journals and edited books. He is also author of
Guide to Readability in African Languages and co-author of A
Profile of Urban Centers Cameroon and Manuel
de Sémantique et Traduction.
CODESRIA
CODESRI A is the Council for the Development of Social Science Research
in Africa head-quartered in Dakar, Senegal, It is an independent
organisation w hose principal objectives are facilitating research, promoting
research-based publishing and creating multiple forums geared towards
the exchange of views and information among African researchers. It
challenges the fragmentation of research through the creation of thematic
research networks that cut across linguistic and regional boundaries.
