Modern philosophy, philosophy of physics, philosophy of language, neurobi-
ology, philosophy of perception, and modern political philosophy—Robert
J. Roecklein argues that all share a common philosophical foundation in
atomism. The theory of atomism developed by Einstein, Bohr, Schrodinger,
and Heisenberg shares common roots with the theories of atomism
developed by Wittgenstein, Russell, and Frege. These atomisms stand on the
shoulders of the atomism of Locke and Hume, Indivisible body—the atomist
shibboleth—extends back to Machiavelli, to Bacon and Hobbes, to Spinoza,
and even to Kant. The presentation of atomism in its modern guises, however,
conceals, buries, and suppresses the irreducible metaphysical foundations of
the theory. Atomism is metaphysics, and this needs to be relearned. Our story
must take us back to the original formulations in the arguments of the great
Parmenides, his companion Zeno, and Leucippus, perhaps the founder of the
theory. It must take us back too to Plato’s fatal critique of the entire argument.
Until now, the full philosophic history and metaphysical foundations of this
theory of atomism have not been presented. Atomist theory not only suggests
cultural premises of great significance for the fate of public opinion and its
possible development, but also instantiates an eminently political doctrine,
one incompatible with even modest degrees of democracy. Locke, Hume and
the Treacherous Logos of Atomism: The Eclipse of Democratic Values in the Early
Modern Period shows that this atomist theory is false and what it means for
philosophy today.
ROBERT J. ROECKLEIN is senior lecturer at Penn State Erie, the
Behrend College. He is author of Plato versus Parmenides, Machiavelli and
Epicureanism, and Politicized Physics in Seventeenth-Century Philosophy.
